Chapter 6 - Blood Behind the Name

Evelyn ran toward the warehouse door.
Lucian caught her.
"Stop."
"He took the cards."
"And he wants us to chase him."
"We have to."
"We will."
Sofia stumbled toward them.
"Dominic?"
Lucian looked back.
The medic team worked on him.
Alive.
Barely.
Sofia closed her eyes.
"He was helping me."
Lucian stared at her.
"What?"
"Not at first. But after the crash, he helped hide me."
"You said he worked for the network."
"He did."
"So why help you?"
"Because he discovered who was really running it."
Lucian's face hardened.
"Thomas."
Sofia nodded.
"Thomas Vale was your father's older half-brother."
Evelyn struggled to process the words.
"He told me he was my uncle."
"He is," Sofia said.
Evelyn looked at her.
"What?"
Sofia lowered her voice.
"Just not through your father."
Evelyn froze.
"My mother?"
Sofia nodded.
"Thomas and Diane were brother and sister."
Silence.
Lucian understood first.
"So Thomas Vale and Diane Hart shared a mother."
"Yes."
"Meaning Diane was also a Vale."
Sofia nodded.
"Alessandro's half-sister."
Evelyn stepped backward.
"No."
Her mother had never told her.
She had spent her entire life believing the Vale family belonged to some distant universe of wealth and violence.
Now blood connected them.
Sofia touched her arm.
"Diane hated the family business. She changed her surname and disappeared. She became a nurse. She wanted nothing to do with any of it."
"Then why return?"
"Because Alessandro asked for help."
Lucian looked toward the ambulance carrying Dominic away.
"Thomas ran the network?"
"For years."
"Why didn't my father know?"
"He trusted him."
Lucian gave a humorless laugh.
"Of course."
Sofia continued.
"Thomas thought Alessandro was weak. He believed fear was more effective than loyalty. He built the network secretly until it became more powerful than the Vale organization itself."
"And Diane discovered it."
"Yes."
Evelyn's voice shook.
"He killed my mother."
Sofia's eyes answered before her words.
"I believe so."
Evelyn turned away.
Lucian stepped closer.
This time he touched her shoulder.
Gentle.
A strange gesture from a man who seemed built for violence.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
"You didn't do it."
"My family did."
"That's not the same thing."
He studied her.
She meant it.
At five fifteen, they returned to Lucian's penthouse.
The broken windows had been temporarily sealed.
Marcus was there, shoulder bandaged.
Lucian stopped.
"You should be in a hospital."
"I dislike hospitals."
"You're fired."
"No."
Lucian looked almost offended.
Marcus nodded toward the conference room.
"We found Thomas."
A city map filled the screen.
"Where?"
"Old Vale estate in Westchester."
Lucian's expression darkened.
"My father's house."
Sofia whispered, "The archive."
Marcus nodded.
"We think the physical command files were always there."
Evelyn looked toward dawn beginning beyond the windows.
"Then he's going there to destroy them."
"No," Sofia said.
Everyone looked at her.
"He's going there because Diane's final evidence is still hidden inside."
Evelyn remembered her mother's video.
The command identity wasn't stored digitally.
"Something proving Thomas ran the network."
Sofia nodded.
"Your mother created it."
"What?"
"A confession."
Lucian frowned.
"Thomas confessed?"
"Not intentionally. Diane recorded him."
"Where is it?"
Sofia looked at Evelyn.
"Your mother told me only you could find it."
Evelyn stared.
"I don't know that house."
"Yes, you do."
"No."
Sofia took out an old photograph.
A little girl stood beside a garden fountain.
Evelyn.
Maybe six years old.
Behind her: the Vale estate.
Evelyn's knees weakened.
"I've been there."
"Your mother took you once."
Memory returned.
Fragmented.
A giant staircase.
A piano.
A man arguing.
Her mother crying.
And a song.
The music box.
Evelyn whispered, "The melody."
Sofia nodded.
"Diane said you'd remember."
Three hours later they reached the estate.
Lucian had not entered it since his father's funeral.
The house remained maintained but empty.
Security swept the grounds.
No Thomas.
The music room waited beneath dust covers.
Evelyn approached the grand piano.
She opened the music box on top.
The melody played.
Simple.
Seven notes.
She pressed the corresponding piano keys.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
Lucian examined the piano.
"Play it backward."
Evelyn did.
Click.
A hidden compartment opened beneath the keyboard.
Inside was a small recorder.
And an envelope.
TO EVELYN.
Her hands trembled.
She opened it.
My darling girl,
If you're reading this, the truth found you despite everything I did to keep you away from it.
You are not responsible for the blood you came from.
You are responsible only for what you choose to become.
Evelyn swallowed hard.
Lucian stood silently beside her.
She continued.
Thomas is my brother.
He believes power excuses cruelty.
It does not.
The recording beside this letter contains the truth.
Use it only when you are surrounded by people you trust.
Evelyn looked at Lucian.
"You trust me?" he asked quietly.
She did not hesitate.
"Yes."
Something changed in his face.
They played the recorder.
Thomas's voice filled the room.
"You should have stayed out of it, Diane."
Her mother's voice followed.
"You murdered Alessandro."
"He was going to destroy everything."
"You built a machine that kills people."
"I built order."
"You killed your own brother."
"He chose weakness."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
There.
Proof.
Thomas continued.
"And if you tell anyone, Evelyn will be next."
The recording ended.
Lucian's eyes were ice.
"We have him."
"No," Marcus said from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Marcus held his phone.
"He has us."
A live broadcast had begun online.
Thomas sat behind a desk.
Behind him, shelves of files.
The stolen memory cards rested beside his hand.
"Good morning, Lucian," Thomas said to the camera.
He knew they were watching.
"I imagine Evelyn has found Diane's little recording."
Evelyn's heart stopped.
Thomas smiled.
"It changes nothing."
He lifted the cards.
"In thirty minutes, every file containing evidence against your enemies will be erased."
Lucian stepped toward the screen.
Thomas continued.
"And before you think of releasing Diane's recording, remember something."
The camera widened.
A chair appeared beside him.
Someone was tied to it.
Dominic.
Thomas had taken him from the hospital.
But that wasn't all.
Another chair came into frame.
Marcus went pale.
The person tied there was his teenage daughter.
Thomas looked into the camera.
"Bring me Diane's recording."
He smiled.
"Or choose which one dies first."
The broadcast ended.
Silence.
Then the mansion's front door slammed downstairs.
Footsteps entered the house.
One person.
Walking slowly.
Lucian drew his weapon.
A familiar woman's voice called from the foyer.
"Evelyn?"
May you like
Sofia's face went white.
Because the voice belonged to Diane Hart.
