Chapter 11 - The Woman Dorian Never Knew

Marcus stared at the recorder.
“Play it.”
Serafina pressed the button again.
Nothing.
The tape had jammed.
Marcus grabbed it.
“Fix it!”
His anger had become desperation.
Serafina saw the child beneath it.
The unwanted son.
The erased name.
“Come with us.”
Marcus laughed.
“So Nikolai can kill me?”
“No.”
“You can promise that?”
“Yes.”
Nikolai appeared behind them.
Marcus raised his weapon.
Serafina stepped between them.
“No more.”
Nikolai lowered his gun.
Marcus surrendered.
Not because he trusted Nikolai.
Because he wanted to hear the rest of his father's message.
Back in Manhattan, technicians repaired the recorder.
Dorian woke that afternoon.
Serafina entered his hospital room.
He looked at her.
“You stayed.”
“I came back.”
“That's different.”
“Yes.”
He understood.
For several moments neither spoke.
Finally Dorian said, “I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“That sounded more like the woman at the gala.”
“She was always there.”
“I know that now.”
“No. You know she exists now.”
The distinction hurt.
But Dorian accepted it.
“I loved the version of you that made my life easy.”
Serafina said nothing.
“And when you stopped feeding my ego, I looked somewhere else for someone who would.”
He swallowed.
“That's not love worthy of you.”
Serafina's eyes filled.
This apology mattered because it demanded nothing.
No second chance.
No absolution.
She touched the divorce papers on the table.
“I signed them.”
Dorian looked down.
Pain crossed his face.
Then he nodded.
“I'll sign.”
“You won't fight?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the first decent thing I can do is respect what you choose.”
She left before he saw her cry.
That evening, the repaired recording arrived.
Marcus sat handcuffed at the table.
Serafina, Elena, Nikolai and Rosa gathered around him.
Salvatore's voice played.
“Tell my son that I knew where he was every day.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
“I stayed away because the men hunting me had already threatened his mother. I believed distance would save him. I told myself abandonment was protection.”
Marcus's eyes filled.
“I was wrong.”
Silence.
“If Marcus ever learns the truth, tell him I did not erase him because I was ashamed of him.”
The recording crackled.
“I erased him because I was ashamed of myself.”
Marcus bowed his head.
Serafina cried quietly.
Salvatore continued.
“My children owe me nothing. Not loyalty. Not forgiveness. Not my empire.”
Then one final sentence.
“If they ever stand together, let them choose something better.”
The recording ended.
Marcus wept.
For the first time, Serafina reached for her brother.
He didn't deserve freedom from consequences.
But he was still human.
And healing did not require pretending no harm had happened.
Later, Elena approached Serafina.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“Vivian disappeared from protective custody.”
Serafina's eyes narrowed.
“Voluntarily?”
“We don't know.”
Elena handed her a security photograph.
Vivian leaving the hospital.
Beside her was Julian Cross.
But Julian was supposed to be in Moretti custody.
Serafina looked toward the room where they had locked him.
Nikolai opened the door.
The chair was empty.
On it rested one envelope.
Serafina's name was written across the front.
