Chapter 5 - The Truth My Mother Buried

My mother was crying.

I had seen Isabella Moretti face down enemies without blinking.

I had watched her negotiate with powerful men who believed they could intimidate her.

I had watched her stand beside my father during the darkest moments of our family.

She was never weak.

Not once.

But now she stood at the top of the staircase holding an old family ring in her hand, tears falling silently down her face.

And I knew.

Whatever happened twenty years ago was something even she had never escaped.

“Mother,” I said.

My voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not anymore.

Just exhausted.

“Tell me the truth.”

The entire mansion became silent.

My father looked away.

Marco stood frozen near the hallway.

Everyone had spent years protecting the same secret.

But now the secret was standing in front of us.

My mother slowly walked down the stairs.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

When she reached the bottom, she looked at the ring in her hand.

“The night Sofia disappeared…”

She stopped.

Like saying the words hurt.

“The night Sofia disappeared, I made a choice.”

My father immediately looked at her.

“Isabella.”

She ignored him.

“No more lies.”

Those three words changed everything.

My mother looked at me.

“I need you to hear this from me.”

I nodded.

She took a deep breath.

“Twenty years ago, we discovered there was a traitor inside our organization.”

I listened.

“The person had access to our security, our finances, our movements.”

Marco nodded.

“I knew who it was.”

My eyes moved toward him.

“Damian Voss.”

“Yes.”

My mother continued.

“Damian knew Alessandro’s greatest weakness was his family.”

She looked at my father.

“So he targeted Sofia.”

I clenched my fists.

“What happened that night?”

My mother closed her eyes.

“She disappeared after a family gathering.”

The words came slowly.

“Everyone believed she had been kidnapped.”

“But?”

My mother looked at the ring.

“But we found her.”

The room went still.

My heart stopped.

“You found her?”

“Yes.”

My voice became sharper.

“Then why did you say she disappeared?”

My mother looked at me.

“Because finding her was not the end.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happened?”

She looked toward the fireplace.

“She was terrified.”

I swallowed.

“She didn’t recognize us.”

Nobody spoke.

“She was only a child. She had been kept somewhere for days. She was frightened. Confused.”

My mother’s voice cracked.

“She kept saying one thing.”

“What?”

My mother looked directly at me.

“She said, ‘Daddy told them where I was.’”

I looked at my father.

His face changed.

“No.”

The word came from him quietly.

My mother continued.

“She didn’t understand what she was saying.”

My father stepped forward.

“Because it wasn’t true.”

My mother looked at him.

“But she believed it.”

The silence that followed was unbearable.

I had spent my entire life believing my father was the strongest person I knew.

The man who could control any situation.

The man who always had a plan.

But now he looked like someone trapped inside his own memories.

“What happened after that?” I asked.

My mother looked down.

“We had a choice.”

“What choice?”

“To bring Sofia home.”

She paused.

“Or to hide her forever.”

I stared at her.

“You chose to hide her.”

My mother nodded.

“I did.”

Anger rose inside me.

“You abandoned your own daughter.”

My mother accepted the words.

“I know.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“You don’t understand.”

I stepped closer.

“You let me grow up thinking I was an only child.”

“I know.”

“You let Sofia live without knowing her family.”

“I know.”

“Then how can you stand there and tell me you were protecting her?”

My mother looked at me.

“Because if we brought her back, she would have died.”

The anger stopped.

“What?”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Damian wasn’t the only person searching for her.”

Marco stepped forward.

“He had someone inside the family.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

Nobody answered.

Again.

That word.

That silence.

The thing I hated most.

“Who?”

My father finally spoke.

“Someone close.”

I looked at him.

“You know who.”

His silence was the answer.

I felt betrayed all over again.

“You knew.”

My father looked away.

“I suspected.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that.”

My voice became louder.

“You don’t get to hide behind suspicion after twenty years.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“And Sofia?”

He had no answer.

That hurt more than anything.

My mother stepped between us.

“There is something else you need to know.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

The edges were damaged.

“I kept this because I was afraid.”

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

My sister’s name was written at the top.

Sofia Moretti.

My hands trembled.

“She wrote this?”

My mother nodded.

“Years later.”

I looked up.

“She remembered?”

“Pieces.”

I unfolded the letter.

The first sentence destroyed me.

I don’t know who I am anymore, but I remember a woman with a white suit and a man who called me his little angel.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

My mother.

My father.

She remembered them.

I continued.

The letter described fragments.

A childhood.

A room.

A woman who helped her escape.

A bracelet she was told never to remove.

Then I saw the final line.

If my brother ever finds me, tell him I never hated him. I was just waiting.

I couldn’t breathe.

My sister knew about me.

All these years.

She knew I existed.

And I never knew she was out there.

“Where did you get this?” I asked.

My mother looked at Lena’s empty room upstairs.

“From her.”

I froze.

“Lena gave you this?”

My mother nodded.

“She came here because she wanted answers too.”

Marco suddenly looked toward the entrance.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer.

He walked toward the window.

Then stopped.

Outside the mansion gates were several black vehicles.

Too many.

My father immediately moved.

“Everyone get away from the windows.”

The command in his voice returned.

The old Alessandro Moretti.

The dangerous one.

“What’s happening?” I asked.

My father looked outside.

“Someone found us.”

The mansion lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every screen in the house turned on.

The security monitors.

The televisions.

The cameras.

All of them.

A face appeared.

A man I had never met.

But I knew exactly who he was.

Damian Voss.

Older.

Smiling.

Watching us.

“Alessandro,” he said through the speakers.

My father stepped forward.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

Damian laughed.

“And you should have killed me when you had the chance.”

Nobody moved.

Then Damian looked directly at the camera.

Directly at me.

“Vincent.”

My blood ran cold.

“How does it feel knowing your entire life was built on a lie?”

My father reached for the control panel.

But the screens changed.

A new image appeared.

A security recording.

A room.

A young girl.

Sofia.

Then Damian spoke again.

“Ask your mother what happened after she found your sister.”

The recording paused.

A timestamp appeared.

Twenty years ago.

The date of Sofia’s disappearance.

Then a door opened in the video.

And the person who walked inside made my mother collapse.
