Chapter 5 - The Woman Everyone Underestimated

Belle Dawson did not sleep much that night.

Not because she was afraid.

Fear was something she understood.

Fear came from doctors’ offices.

From hospital bills.

From watching someone she loved slowly disappear while pretending everything would be okay.

This was different.

This was uncertainty.

Someone had opened a door to her past that she had carefully closed.

For three years, Belle had carried her old life quietly.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she was tired.

Tired of people seeing only achievements.

Tired of being measured by titles.

Tired of explaining why a woman who once managed a luxury hotel was now cleaning rooms in a mansion.

People always wanted a simple story.

A success story.

A tragedy story.

A story where someone could easily decide who was the hero and who was the victim.

But real life was never that simple.

Sometimes people lost everything and still kept going.

Sometimes starting over was not failure.

Sometimes it was survival.

Belle looked at the photograph on her desk.

The image showed a younger version of herself.

Confident.

Standing beneath bright lights.

Receiving an award while hundreds of employees applauded behind her.

She remembered that day.

She remembered feeling proud.

Not because of the award.

Because the people behind her had succeeded too.

That had always been the part nobody understood.

Leadership was never about standing above people.

It was about standing beside them.

A soft knock pulled her away from her thoughts.

Belle quickly placed the photograph back inside the envelope.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

Nikolai Ashcroft stood there.

She immediately became alert.

“Mr. Ashcroft.”

He looked at the desk.

Then at her tired expression.

“You’re still working.”

Belle glanced at the reports.

“I wanted to finish the schedule updates.”

“It’s midnight.”

She smiled slightly.

“You know that because you’re also here.”

A small silence followed.

For most people, that answer would have been considered too casual.

But Nikolai did not react negatively.

If anything, he seemed almost amused.

“You noticed.”

“You’re not exactly difficult to notice.”

The corner of his mouth moved slightly.

Almost a smile.

Almost.

“I heard about the phone call.”

Belle’s expression changed.

“You know?”

“I know Julianne contacted you.”

She looked away.

“I didn’t want to create more problems.”

Nikolai’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“You still think problems happen because of you.”

Belle did not answer.

Because he was right.

And she hated that he was right.

“Did she threaten you?”

Belle hesitated.

“No.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She looked at him.

The same thing happened every time.

Nikolai did not allow people to hide behind polite answers.

“She suggested I was manipulating people.”

His expression remained calm.

“She suggested you were using your past?”

Belle nodded.

“And what did you say?”

“I said nothing.”

“Why?”

Belle looked down.

“Because arguing with someone who already decided who you are is exhausting.”

The answer affected him more than she expected.

Because he understood that feeling.

People had decided who Nikolai Ashcroft was years ago.

A ruthless businessman.

A dangerous man.

A person without emotion.

Most people never bothered to ask if they were wrong.

“You should have told me.”

Belle looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because she targeted you.”

“She’s angry.”

“That doesn’t excuse it.”

Belle studied him.

“You’re angry.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

“At her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nikolai looked at her.

“Because she hurt someone who did not deserve it.”

Belle looked away.

For some reason, that answer made her uncomfortable.

Not because she disliked it.

Because she was not used to someone caring about her without expecting something back.

The next morning, Ashcroft Manor was different.

Not because of Belle.

Because of Julianne.

She entered the main hall wearing a designer outfit, sunglasses, and the confidence of someone who believed the world still belonged to her.

She walked directly toward the management office.

Several employees stopped talking when she passed.

She noticed.

And she smiled.

Because attention was still attention.

Even fear counted.

She entered Belle’s office without knocking.

Belle looked up.

“Julianne.”

“Busy?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Julianne sat down without being invited.

“I wanted to talk.”

Belle remained standing.

“About what?”

“You.”

Belle said nothing.

Julianne looked around the office.

“The transformation is impressive.”

Her tone was not admiration.

It was an insult disguised as one.

“From housekeeping staff to management.”

She smiled.

“Very inspiring.”

Belle understood immediately.

This was not a conversation.

It was a performance.

“I have work to do.”

Julianne leaned forward.

“Do you know what people are saying?”

Belle continued reading the report.

“I’m sure you’ll tell me.”

Julianne smiled.

“They think Nikolai saved you.”

Belle looked up.

“He gave me an opportunity.”

“Exactly.”

Julianne’s eyes sharpened.

“You don’t even deny it.”

“Because it’s true.”

That answer surprised her.

Belle continued.

“Mr. Ashcroft recognized my experience.”

Julianne laughed softly.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“You still believe this is about experience.”

Belle closed the folder.

“What is it about?”

Julianne stood.

“It’s about knowing your place.”

The sentence was almost identical to the one she had said before.

But this time, Belle was different.

The old Belle would have stayed silent.

The old Belle would have absorbed the insult and moved on.

This Belle looked directly at her.

“My place is wherever my abilities allow me to stand.”

Julianne froze.

For the first time, Belle did not shrink.

“I spent years building my career,” Belle continued.

“I lost it because life changed. Not because I lacked ability.”

Julianne stared.

“You really believe that?”

“Yes.”

The answer was simple.

No anger.

No arrogance.

Just certainty.

And that was what bothered Julianne most.

Because Belle was not pretending anymore.

She believed herself.

“You think Nikolai sees you differently.”

Belle remained quiet.

Julianne stepped closer.

“He sees what you want him to see.”

“No.”

Belle’s voice was calm.

“He sees what is there.”

The room went silent.

Julianne’s expression hardened.

“You’re dangerous.”

Belle almost laughed.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I’m just someone you underestimated.”

That sentence stayed between them.

Because it was true.

Julianne had never feared Belle because she thought Belle was weak.

Now she feared her because she realized Belle had never been weak at all.

Later that afternoon, Nikolai reviewed financial reports in his office when Marcus entered.

“We found something.”

Nikolai looked up.

“About Julianne?”

“Yes.”

Marcus placed several documents on the desk.

“She has been contacting former employees.”

Nikolai frowned.

“Why?”

“To collect information about Belle.”

“Anything useful?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Not exactly.”

“Explain.”

“She’s looking for mistakes.”

Nikolai understood.

“She wants a scandal.”

“Yes.”

“Does one exist?”

Marcus shook his head.

“Nothing illegal. Nothing unethical.”

A pause.

“Actually, the opposite.”

Nikolai looked at the documents.

“Meaning?”

“Everyone we contacted described Belle as one of the best managers they ever worked with.”

He read silently.

Employee retention improved.

Customer satisfaction increased.

Revenue increased.

No complaints.

No scandals.

No hidden problems.

Just excellence.

Marcus watched him.

“She’s clean.”

Nikolai looked at the final page.

A recommendation letter from Valmont Grand Hotel.

The last sentence caught his attention.

“Belle Dawson was not only an exceptional manager. She was the kind of leader who made people believe they were capable of more.”

Nikolai stared at the words.

Then closed the file.

“Julianne won’t stop.”

“No.”

“She believes finding something will make her right.”

Marcus nodded.

“What do you want to do?”

Nikolai looked out the window.

For years, he had solved problems by removing threats.

By controlling situations.

By making sure nobody had the chance to hurt the people under his protection.

But Belle was different.

She did not need someone fighting every battle for her.

She needed someone who trusted her to stand.

“Nothing.”

Marcus looked surprised.

“Nothing?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

Nikolai’s expression remained calm.

“Because Julianne thinks Belle’s strength is a weakness.”

He paused.

“She’s about to learn the opposite.”

Three days later, Ashcroft Manor hosted another major event.

A private business dinner.

Executives.

Investors.

Important guests.

The kind of evening where every detail mattered.

And for the first time, Belle was responsible for everything.

Several employees worried.

Not because they doubted her.

Because they knew others wanted her to fail.

Julianne attended as well.

She arrived with a smile.

A dangerous smile.

Belle noticed immediately.

Something was coming.

The evening began smoothly.

Everything was perfect.

The service.

The timing.

The organization.

Guests praised the staff.

Executives complimented the improvements.

Nikolai watched from across the room.

He saw what others missed.

Belle was not trying to impress anyone.

She was simply doing what she had always done.

Taking care of people.

Then suddenly—

A waiter dropped a tray.

Glass shattered across the floor.

Everyone turned.

And Julianne smiled.

Because the waiter was one of the newest employees.

And the tray contained the most expensive wine of the evening.

The room became tense.

The young waiter looked terrified.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Julianne stepped forward.

“This is unacceptable.”

Belle immediately moved between them.

“Stop.”

Everyone looked at her.

Julianne smiled.

“Excuse me?”

Belle looked at the broken glass.

Then at the waiter.

“Are you injured?”

The young man shook his head.

“No.”

“Good.”

She turned toward the staff.

“Clean this safely.”

Then she looked at Julianne.

“The mistake has been handled.”

Julianne laughed.

“You’re protecting him?”

“Yes.”

“Even after he ruined an important event?”

Belle looked at her.

“Because he made a mistake.”

She paused.

“Not because he is worthless.”

The room became silent.

Nikolai watched carefully.

Julianne had tried to create the same situation again.

Someone vulnerable.

Someone blamed.

Someone powerless.

But Belle was no longer standing alone.

And this time, she refused to let history repeat itself.

Julianne’s smile disappeared.

Because she finally understood.

The woman she had tried to break with coffee...

May you like

was the same woman now standing between others and humiliation.

And that made her far more dangerous than anyone realized.
