Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Survived the Explosion

Carlo Valenti stumbled into the office with blood on his collar.

Dante caught him.

“You were tied to a chair.”

“I escaped.”

“Who attacked you?”

Carlo looked at Marco.

“Ask him.”

Marco shook his head. “Don't do this.”

Dante stepped between them.

“Enough.”

He looked at his father.

“Tell me about my brother.”

Carlo closed his eyes.

“His name was Gabriel.”

Dante had never heard the name.

Carlo sat down.

Forty years earlier, before Dante was born, Carlo and his wife had their first child prematurely.

Gabriel disappeared from a private hospital.

The hospital claimed he died.

Carlo later discovered the body they buried wasn't his son.

Dante felt sick.

“What happened?”

“I spent years looking.”

“And?”

“I found the network.”

Not a criminal empire.

Something worse.

Doctors, lawyers, adoption brokers, wealthy donors.

They exploited emergency births and vulnerable families, falsifying deaths and identities.

Carlo infiltrated them.

But instead of destroying the network, he began secretly financing investigations through what later became the Valenti Foundation.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wanted it to die with me.”

“Instead it came for my wife.”

Carlo looked devastated.

“Sofia discovered everything.”

Dante finally understood why she had approached his family years before meeting him.

“You knew Sofia before I did.”

“Yes.”

“Did she marry me because of this?”

Carlo didn't answer quickly enough.

Dante felt something break.

Then Carlo said, “At first, she approached you because of the investigation.”

Dante turned away.

“But she fell in love with you.”

“Don't.”

“She tried to leave the investigation when she became pregnant.”

Dante faced him.

“And they wouldn't let her.”

“No.”

The phone rang again.

Evelyn Shaw.

Dante answered.

“You have twenty-nine minutes.”

“Let me speak to Sofia.”

“No.”

“Then there's no deal.”

Silence.

Then another voice.

Weak.

“Dante?”

He stopped breathing.

“Sofia.”

“I'm sorry.”

Her voice cracked.

“I’m so sorry.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Nineteen days of mourning.

Nineteen nights talking to a child who wasn't his.

A funeral.

An empty bed.

Anger should have come first.

It didn't.

Love did.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“The baby?”

“He’s here.”

Dante pressed the phone tighter.

“Is he okay?”

“He needs medical care.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Sofia—”

“Listen to me. Evelyn wants the ledger.”

Carlo went rigid.

Dante looked at him.

“What ledger?”

Sofia heard.

“Your father has it.”

Carlo whispered, “No.”

Evelyn returned to the call.

“Midnight. Pier 47. Bring the original ledger.”

The call ended.

Dante looked at Carlo.

“Give it to me.”

“If she gets it, every name disappears.”

“If I don't bring it, my family disappears.”

“The ledger is evidence.”

“My son is three weeks old.”

Carlo lowered his eyes.

Dante stepped closer.

“There is no evidence on this earth worth more to me than that child.”

Carlo nodded.

“The ledger is in the chapel.”

They retrieved it from beneath a memorial plaque.

A small black notebook.

Names.

Dates.

Hospitals.

Payments.

Hundreds of children.

Mara looked horrified.

“This could destroy dozens of careers.”

“It could reunite families,” Carlo said.

Dante handed it to Luca.

“Copy everything.”

They photographed every page and uploaded encrypted copies to three attorneys and a federal contact Carlo trusted.

Then Dante took the original.

11:47.

Pier 47.

Fog covered the river.

Dante arrived apparently alone.

Evelyn stood beneath a warehouse light.

Two armed men flanked her.

Sofia sat inside a parked ambulance.

Dante saw her through the windshield.

She held their son.

Alive.

Dante’s entire world was ten yards away.

“Ledger,” Evelyn said.

“Family first.”

“You don't negotiate.”

“I always negotiate.”

She smiled.

“That arrogance is why Sofia never trusted you with the truth.”

Dante looked toward his wife.

Sofia stared back.

Tears filled her eyes.

Evelyn extended her hand.

Dante threw the ledger halfway between them.

One guard retrieved it.

Evelyn flipped through the pages.

Then smiled.

“Original.”

“Now Sofia.”

Evelyn nodded.

The ambulance door opened.

Sofia stepped out holding the baby.

Dante’s breathing stopped.

His son was impossibly small.

A blue identification band circled his ankle.

Sofia walked toward him.

Ten feet.

Eight.

Six.

Then a gunshot exploded.

One of Evelyn’s guards collapsed.

Luca’s team emerged from the shadows.

Chaos.

Dante ran toward Sofia.

Evelyn grabbed her.

A pistol pressed against Sofia’s neck.

“Stop!”

Everyone froze.

The baby began crying.

Dante stared at his son.

The sound nearly destroyed him.

“Let them go.”

Evelyn backed toward the warehouse.

“Your father destroyed my family.”

Carlo appeared behind Dante.

“No, Evelyn.”

Her face twisted.

“You.”

Carlo walked forward.

“I know who you are.”

Dante looked between them.

Carlo whispered, “Evelyn Shaw isn't her real name.”

Evelyn’s hand trembled.

Carlo continued.

“Her mother lost a baby to the network.”

Evelyn screamed, “Because of you!”

“No. Because of the man I failed to stop.”

“Who?” Dante demanded.

Carlo looked toward the warehouse.

“The founder.”

A light came on inside.

An elderly man stepped from the darkness.

Carlo’s face went white.

“That’s impossible.”

The man smiled.

Dante had seen that face before.

In an old photograph from his childhood.

The man had been standing beside Carlo.

Dante whispered, “Uncle Gabriel?”

Carlo shook his head.

“No.”

The man smiled wider.

May you like

Then he said:

“Hello, little brother.”
