Chapter 5 - My Father's Three-Million-Dollar Lie

Beatrice crushed the photograph in her hand and said, "My sister is dead."
Lorenzo turned it over.
A time and address had been written on the back.
MIDNIGHT.
VILLA SAN CORVO.
COME WITHOUT POLICE.
Then Beatrice noticed four words beneath it.
ASK WHO OWNS THE DEBT.
Her sister was alive.
For twelve years, Beatrice had visited a grave every November.
There had been a funeral.
A closed casket.
Charles had stood beside her in black and told her not to make a scene.
Beatrice had cried until she vomited.
Vanessa had supposedly lost control of her car on a rainy road.
Now Beatrice was holding a photograph of her taken that morning.
"You knew?" she asked Lorenzo.
"No."
"Did Matteo?"
"No."
"Did Mara?"
"Possibly."
Beatrice paced the kitchen.
"This is insane."
Lorenzo watched her.
"My mother is missing. My sister is alive. My father owes money that may not even be his debt. Someone falsified contracts to put me under your control."
"Yes."
"And you are still remarkably calm."
"No."
"You look calm."
"That's different."
She stopped.
He was angry.
She could see it now.
Not loud anger.
The kind that made everyone else in the room move carefully.
"What happens at midnight?"
"We go."
"The message says no police."
"I wasn't planning on inviting them."
"You are not leaving me here."
"I know."
Beatrice stared.
"You aren't going to argue?"
"It would waste time."
Despite everything, she almost smiled.
By eleven thirty, Villa San Corvo was surrounded discreetly by Lorenzo's men.
The villa belonged to a shell company associated with Charles Gallagher.
Matteo discovered that only twenty minutes before they arrived.
Lorenzo insisted Beatrice wear a protective vest beneath her coat.
She complained.
He ignored her.
"Stay behind me."
"You've said that before."
"And you ignore it every time."
"Then perhaps adjust your expectations."
Lorenzo gave her a look.
Matteo coughed suspiciously as if hiding a laugh.
The front doors were unlocked.
Inside, the villa was silent.
A dining table had been set for three.
Three glasses.
Three chairs.
A folder sat in the center.
Beatrice approached it.
Inside was a copy of Lorenzo's loan agreement.
The original version.
No mention of Beatrice.
Another document followed.
A transfer authorization.
Charles Gallagher had redirected the full three million dollars within forty-eight hours of receiving it.
Recipient:
V. Gallagher Holdings.
Vanessa.
Beatrice stared.
"My sister took your money."
Matteo corrected gently.
"Her company did."
Lorenzo flipped through the pages.
"Keep going."
There were offshore accounts.
Property transfers.
A list of medical payments to Dr. Rizzo.
Then a death certificate.
Vanessa Gallagher.
Beatrice frowned.
"This is the one we had."
Lorenzo held it to the light.
"Forgery."
"How do you know?"
"The seal."
Matteo nodded.
"Wrong year format."
Beatrice sat down.
Her sister had faked her death.
Or Charles had faked it for her.
Footsteps sounded upstairs.
Lorenzo immediately moved in front of Beatrice.
A woman appeared at the balcony railing.
Blonde hair.
Slim face.
Older than the sister in Beatrice's memories.
But unmistakable.
Vanessa.
Beatrice stood.
"Vanessa?"
Her sister looked down.
For one second, emotion cracked through her face.
"Bea."
Beatrice's knees nearly buckled.
Nobody had called her that since her mother disappeared.
Vanessa descended slowly.
Beatrice wanted to run to her.
She did not.
Too many lies stood between them.
"You're alive."
"Yes."
"You let me bury you."
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"I had to."
"You had to?"
"Charles would have killed me."
Beatrice laughed sharply.
"Apparently everyone in this family had to disappear except me."
Vanessa flinched.
"I'm sorry."
"Where is Mom?"
Vanessa looked toward Lorenzo.
"Not in front of him."
Beatrice's voice hardened.
"You don't get to decide who I trust."
"You don't know what he is."
"I know exactly what he is. That's more than I can say about you."
Lorenzo remained silent.
Vanessa looked at him.
"Your brother destroyed our family."
Lorenzo replied, "Your father helped him."
"Yes."
"Then tell her."
Vanessa turned toward Beatrice.
"Mom found out Charles and Alessandro were using Gallagher Imports to move money. When she threatened to expose them, Charles had her committed. I tried to help her."
"You were twenty-four."
"Twenty-three."
"What happened?"
"I got Mom out."
Beatrice stared.
"You?"
"With Mara."
"So Mara was the nurse."
"Yes."
"Where did you take her?"
"Here first. Then Malta. Then France."
"Why didn't you take me?"
Vanessa's face collapsed.
"Because Mom thought Charles would follow if both of us vanished."
Beatrice stepped back.
"So you left me with him."
"She thought you were safer because you were a child."
"I was eighteen."
"You were still his daughter."
"Exactly."
Vanessa shook her head.
"You don't understand what he threatened."
"Then explain it."
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"He said if we took you, he'd tell Alessandro where Mom was. We believed him."
Beatrice felt sick.
"And then you died."
"I staged my death because Charles discovered I was moving money."
"Whose money?"
"His."
Lorenzo's gaze sharpened.
"Three million?"
"No."
Vanessa looked at him.
"More."
"How much?"
"Nine million over twelve years."
Silence.
Vanessa gestured toward the documents.
"Charles has been pretending he's broke. He isn't."
"Then why borrow from me?"
"To create a crisis."
Lorenzo's face darkened.
"For what purpose?"
"To move Beatrice."
Everyone became still.
Beatrice whispered, "Why me?"
Vanessa looked at her.
"Because Mom left something in your name."
"What?"
"Control."
"Of what?"
"The Palermo facility."
"I thought Mom owned it."
"She transferred beneficial ownership to you seven years ago."
Beatrice frowned.
"I never signed anything."
"You didn't need to. It was a trust."
Lorenzo understood first.
"The facility isn't worth three million."
"No."
Vanessa looked at him.
"It's worth access."
"To what?"
"Shipping records."
Matteo spoke.
"Alessandro's archives."
Vanessa nodded.
"Every shipment. Every account. Every politician. Every judge. Every company."
Lorenzo's expression went cold.
"My brother kept leverage."
"And Charles wanted it."
Beatrice looked between them.
"Why send me to Lorenzo?"
Vanessa met her eyes.
"Because the trust releases control only if you establish permanent residence in Sicily."
Beatrice went still.
"The five-year clause."
"Yes."
Her father had not offered her to settle a debt.
He had engineered her relocation to activate a trust.
Everything had been a mechanism.
The debt.
The altered contract.
The bridal dress.
Even the humiliating lies.
"Why tell Lorenzo I was... experienced?"
Vanessa's face tightened.
"To make him dismiss you."
Beatrice stared.
"What?"
"Charles needed Lorenzo to believe you were shallow, unstable, and easy to control. He expected you to be housed here while he accessed the facility through documents he intended to make you sign."
"So I wasn't payment."
"You were a key."
The words hit harder than collateral.
Lorenzo turned away, fury rolling through his shoulders.
Beatrice looked at Vanessa.
"Where is Mom?"
Vanessa's eyes shifted.
"Safe."
"Where?"
"I can't tell you yet."
"Why?"
"Because Charles doesn't know."
"He is here."
"Yes."
"Then help us stop him."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You think I haven't tried?"
A sound came from the front hall.
One slow clap.
Then another.
Charles Gallagher stepped into the room.
Beatrice's blood went cold.
Two armed men stood behind him.
Charles looked at Vanessa.
"Always dramatic."
Beatrice's anger exploded.
"You buried your own daughter."
Charles shrugged.
"Symbolically."
Vanessa reached inside her jacket.
One of Charles's men raised a gun.
Lorenzo moved.
Everything happened at once.
Weapons came up.
Matteo pulled Beatrice behind a stone column.
Lorenzo's men entered from side doors.
Charles froze when he realized the villa was surrounded.
Lorenzo spoke softly.
"Put it down."
Charles smiled.
"You still think this is about your three million."
"No."
"Good."
Charles looked at Beatrice.
"Then perhaps my daughter has finally learned something."
"Don't call me that."
His smile faded.
"You belong to me more than you understand."
Beatrice stepped out despite Matteo's attempt to stop her.
"No. I don't."
Charles reached into his coat.
Lorenzo raised his weapon.
Charles slowly produced a document.
"Guardianship order."
Beatrice's stomach dropped.
"It's fake."
"Is it?"
He tossed it onto the table.
Matteo grabbed it.
His expression changed.
"This was granted six years ago."
Beatrice stared.
"No."
Charles smiled.
"You signed the evaluations. Dr. Rizzo certified you. The court approved limited financial guardianship."
"I didn't know."
"That isn't my problem."
Vanessa swore.
Charles continued.
"Every trust transfer she makes without my approval is void."
Lorenzo looked at Matteo.
"Is he right?"
Matteo read quickly.
"Not necessarily."
Charles smiled wider.
"Close enough."
Then the lights went out.
Gunshots cracked from outside.
Someone grabbed Beatrice.
She screamed.
A hand covered her mouth.
Lorenzo shouted her name.
Beatrice fought, kicked, bit.
The person dragging her whispered against her ear.
"Stop fighting."
She froze.
It was a woman's voice.
Familiar.
Impossible.
"Beatrice."
Her heart stopped.
"I came back for you."
The emergency lights flickered on.
Beatrice turned.
The woman holding her had dark hair streaked with gray.
A small scar beside one eyebrow.
May you like
Her mother's scar.
Eleanor Gallagher was alive.
