Chapter 5 - The Sister No One Mentioned

Luca opened the door.
A woman stood outside.
Thirty-four.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
A face Sloan knew without ever having seen it.
Her mother’s face.
Not exactly.
But enough.
The woman looked at Sloan.
Then Paige.
Then Richard.
Her expression hardened.
“Hello, Dad.”
Paige staggered backward.
Richard looked as if someone had struck him.
“Elena.”
Sloan stared.
“You know her.”
Richard whispered, “Yes.”
Elena entered.
She wore a dark green coat and carried a canvas messenger bag.
Nothing about her suggested wealth.
Or mafia.
Or the kind of secret capable of destroying two families.
Yet every person in the room watched her as though she carried a bomb.
Maybe she did.
She looked at Luca.
“You must be Antonio’s son.”
“Luca.”
“Matteo talked about you.”
Luca swallowed.
“You knew my brother?”
“He saved my mother.”
Sloan whispered, “Our mother.”
Elena looked at her.
A long silence passed.
“Yes.”
Paige sat down.
“I got married today.”
Everyone stared.
Paige laughed hysterically.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know why I said that.”
Elena smiled faintly.
“I heard.”
“It didn’t go well.”
“I also heard that.”
Sloan almost laughed.
Grief and absurdity had apparently merged.
She looked at Elena.
“How?”
Elena understood.
“I’m seven years older than you.”
“Mom had you before she met Dad?”
Richard answered.
“No.”
Sloan turned.
Richard closed his eyes.
“Elena is mine.”
Paige whispered, “What?”
Elena’s expression went cold.
“Biologically.”
Richard looked at her.
“I tried—”
“You paid people to keep me away.”
“I protected you.”
Elena laughed.
“The family motto.”
Sloan felt a strange ache.
Everyone Richard harmed had heard the same excuse.
Protected.
Saved.
Preserved.
Never controlled.
Never lied.
Never stole.
Elena removed the messenger bag.
“My mother had me when she was nineteen.”
Sloan stared.
“Mom was nineteen?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she raise you?”
“She tried.”
Richard whispered, “We were teenagers.”
Elena ignored him.
“Richard’s parents found out. They decided a baby would ruin his future.”
Sloan looked at Richard.
He stared at the floor.
“They pressured Eleanor into adoption.”
Elena continued.
“She spent seventeen years trying to find me.”
Paige cried quietly.
“And then?”
“She did.”
Sloan’s heart tightened.
“The photograph.”
Elena nodded.
“I met her when I was seventeen.”
“Why didn’t she tell us?”
“She planned to.”
“Then she got sick.”
“Yes.”
Luca spoke.
“And Matteo?”
Elena looked at him.
“He helped her locate me.”
Luca absorbed that.
Elena continued.
“Your brother worked for Antonio but hated what the organization was becoming. Matteo wanted out.”
Luca laughed bitterly.
“He never told me.”
“He was trying to protect you.”
Luca looked away.
The word again.
Protect.
Elena opened her bag.
Inside was a small external hard drive.
Richard stared at it.
“No.”
Elena held it up.
“Yes.”
Luca stepped closer.
“Matteo’s copy?”
“One of them.”
“One?”
Elena nodded.
“He made three.”
Sloan asked, “Where are the others?”
“One went to Miriam.”
Miriam shook her head.
“I never received it.”
“Then it was intercepted.”
“And the third?” Luca asked.
Elena looked at him.
“Antonio.”
Luca went still.
“My father had proof Richard killed Matteo?”
“Yes.”
“And did nothing?”
“He used it as leverage.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.”
Elena plugged the drive into Miriam’s laptop.
A video appeared.
Timestamp.
Fifteen years earlier.
Westchester residence.
Terrace camera.
Sloan’s stomach turned.
“No.”
Paige reached for her hand.
Sloan took it.
Luca stood beside them.
Elena pressed play.
The video had no audio.
Eleanor appeared first.
Thin.
Weak.
But walking.
Matteo stood beside her.
Richard entered.
Argument.
Gestures.
Matteo moved between them.
Richard shoved him.
Once.
Matteo stumbled.
Caught the railing.
For one second, it looked like he might recover.
Then Richard pushed again.
Matteo disappeared over the edge.
Luca stopped breathing.
Sloan squeezed his hand.
Richard whispered, “Turn it off.”
No one listened.
Eleanor screamed silently.
She grabbed a phone.
Richard took it.
She struck him.
He pushed her away.
Eleanor collapsed.
The timestamp continued.
One minute.
Five.
Ten.
Richard paced.
Twenty.
Eleanor moved weakly.
Thirty.
She stopped moving.
Forty-two minutes after the fall, Antonio Moretti arrived.
Luca stared at his father.
Antonio checked Matteo’s body first.
Then Eleanor.
Then spoke to Richard.
They moved through the house.
Cleaned surfaces.
Removed phones.
Disabled cameras.
Except they didn’t know Matteo had duplicated the feed remotely.
Sloan began crying before the video ended.
Paige leaned into her.
Luca remained rigid.
When the footage stopped, no one spoke.
Finally Elena closed the laptop.
“That is what happened.”
Richard sat down.
He looked old.
Not sixty-two.
Eighty.
Sloan stared at him.
“I spent fifteen years missing her.”
“I know.”
“You watched me miss her.”
“I know.”
“You let me blame cancer.”
“I know.”
Paige whispered, “You walked me down the aisle today.”
Richard cried.
“Yes.”
“You kissed my cheek.”
“Yes.”
“And then tried to steal from Sloan.”
“I was desperate.”
Paige removed her wedding ring.
Carter watched.
“Paige.”
She turned.
“I don’t know who you are.”
“I love you.”
“No.”
“I do.”
“You drugged my sister.”
“I never touched her.”
“You planned it.”
“I was trying to save our future.”
Paige laughed through tears.
“What future?”
She placed the ring on the desk.
Carter stared at it.
“I married you an hour ago.”
Paige’s voice steadied.
“And I’m already done.”
He reached for her.
Luca stepped between them.
Carter stopped.
Paige looked at Sloan.
“I’m sorry.”
Sloan pulled her into a hug.
For the first time that night, Paige cried against her sister instead of standing on the other side of the room.
Elena watched.
Something shifted in her face.
Longing.
Sloan saw it.
She extended one arm.
Elena hesitated.
Then stepped closer.
Three daughters.
Eleanor’s three girls.
Holding one another inside a hotel office while the men who had lied to them stood silent.
Luca turned away.
Sloan released her sisters and approached him.
“You should watch it again.”
“No.”
“For evidence.”
“I saw enough.”
“Luca.”
His voice cracked.
“He raised me.”
Sloan stopped.
“I know.”
“He came home that night.”
She waited.
“I was twenty-three.”
Luca stared at nothing.
“He told me Matteo had been drinking.”
Sloan’s chest hurt.
“He said Matteo crashed his car.”
Elena whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Luca nodded once.
He looked at Richard.
“You let my father bury my brother as a drunk.”
Richard said nothing.
“You let my mother believe he died driving.”
Still nothing.
Luca stepped toward him.
Sloan touched Luca’s arm.
This time he looked at her immediately.
“Don’t become him.”
Luca’s face tightened.
“What?”
“Don’t make a decision you’ll spend fifteen years justifying.”
He stared at her.
Then lowered his hands.
Richard looked relieved.
Luca saw it.
“Don’t misunderstand.”
Richard’s relief vanished.
“I’m not forgiving you.”
Sirens sounded below.
Paige looked toward the window.
“Police?”
Miriam nodded.
“I called them from the hallway.”
Richard stood.
“You cannot hand that footage over.”
Elena laughed.
“Watch us.”
“You’ll implicate Antonio Moretti.”
Luca replied, “Good.”
Richard stared.
“Your own father?”
“My father covered up my brother’s death and helped your wife die.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“He can answer for it in hell.”
Richard’s shoulders collapsed.
Police arrived eleven minutes later.
The ballroom below became chaos.
Guests filmed.
Reporters gathered outside.
Richard Hayes left his daughter’s wedding in handcuffs.
Carter Bell followed.
His tuxedo jacket covered his wrists, but cameras still captured everything.
Sloan watched from a private corridor.
Paige stood beside her wearing the wedding gown she now hated.
Elena had given her coat to cover the lace.
Luca remained slightly behind Sloan.
Not touching her.
Not claiming her.
Just there.
Detective Marissa Keene took their statements.
Miriam handed over the hard drive.
The forged contracts.
The recordings.
The syringe.
The authentication logs.
By midnight, Asteria froze all contested transfers.
At 12:01 a.m., Sloan Hayes turned thirty.
And legally inherited controlling interest in the company her mother built.
No champagne.
No candles.
No birthday cake.
Only Paige whispering, “Happy birthday.”
Sloan laughed through tears.
“Worst birthday ever.”
Elena smiled.
“Give it time.”
Luca looked at her.
“Happy birthday, Sloan.”
She met his eyes.
Three years collapsed between them.
Love.
Anger.
Betrayal.
Truth.
She wanted to ask him a thousand questions.
Instead she said, “You don’t get to call me yours again.”
Luca nodded.
“I know.”
“Ever.”
“I know.”
“I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
Sloan studied him.
“What changed?”
“You reminded me of something tonight.”
“What?”
“That protecting someone without giving them a choice is another form of control.”
Sloan swallowed.
“That sounded almost emotionally healthy.”
“Don’t spread it around.”
She laughed.
Actually laughed.
Then Detective Keene approached.
“Ms. Hayes?”
“Yes?”
“We found something in Carter Bell’s phone.”
The humor vanished.
“What?”
“A scheduled message.”
“Sent to whom?”
“We don’t know.”
“When?”
Keene looked at the screen.
“Eleven minutes before he was arrested.”
Sloan’s stomach tightened.
“What did it say?”
Keene turned the phone toward her.
If the transfer fails, activate the contingency.
Sloan looked up.
“What contingency?”
Keene’s expression darkened.
May you like
“We were hoping you could tell us.”
Then every light in the hotel went out.
