Chapter 6 - The Man Waiting Beneath The Hotel

A woman stood in front of a hidden basement door, whispering: "My father is behind this door."
When Alex Carter entered the forgotten basement, she discovered an old surveillance room covered with photographs. But one image was placed in the center: "Alex Carter — Protected Target." Alex finally realized she was never the victim they planned to destroy.
The door slowly opened.
Nobody moved.
The voice from inside disappeared.
For a moment, I wondered if I had imagined it.
Eight years of unanswered questions had turned my entire life into something I could no longer trust.
Memories.
Documents.
People.
Everything had another side.
Roman stepped forward.
"Wait."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
His eyes stayed on the darkness behind the door.
"Because whoever is inside knows we're here."
I almost laughed.
"Everyone knows we're here."
I looked around the hallway.
Preston.
Victor.
Roman.
Three men who had controlled pieces of my life without my permission.
"Everyone seems to know everything except me."
Nobody answered.
Because it was true.
I reached for the door handle.
Roman grabbed my arm.
"Alex."
I looked at him.
For the first time, there was something different in his eyes.
Not control.
Not mystery.
Concern.
"If you open that door, you can't go back."
I pulled my arm away.
"I lost that option eight years ago."
Then I opened it.
The basement was not what I expected.
I imagined an abandoned storage room.
Old furniture.
Dust.
Broken equipment.
Instead, I found a hidden operation center.
Monitors lined the walls.
Files covered every table.
Photographs were pinned across a large board.
And every photograph was connected by red lines.
I walked inside slowly.
My footsteps echoed.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone was looking at the same thing.
The center photograph.
Me.
A picture of me leaving Sabbes Auction House.
Another of me entering my apartment.
Another of me at a charity event.
Another of me with Preston.
The person watching me had followed my life for years.
I stepped closer.
There was a label beneath the photographs.
"Protected Target."
My stomach tightened.
Protected.
Not watched.
Not monitored.
Protected.
"What is this?"
My voice was barely a whisper.
Roman walked behind me.
"I don't know."
I turned around.
"You expect me to believe that?"
He looked at the photographs.
"I knew your father was investigating someone."
"Someone?"
"Someone powerful."
I pointed at the room.
"This isn't an investigation."
I looked around.
"This is my life."
Victor entered slowly.
His expression was filled with regret.
"He built this room."
I turned.
"Who?"
Victor looked at the photographs.
"Your father."
The answer shocked me.
"My father was watching me?"
"No."
Victor shook his head.
"He was protecting you."
I stared at him.
"From who?"
Nobody answered.
Again.
That silence.
The same silence that had followed me for eight years.
I walked toward the nearest desk.
There were hundreds of documents.
Security reports.
Financial records.
Photos.
Names.
Then I saw something.
A file labeled:
"PRESTON HAYES."
I opened it.
Inside were photographs of Preston.
Not from recent years.
From much earlier.
College.
Internships.
Business meetings.
My hands froze.
One picture showed Preston standing beside my father.
They were shaking hands.
I looked at the date.
Fourteen years ago.
Before I met him.
Before I knew his name.
Before I ever imagined he would become the person trying to ruin me.
"He knew my father."
Roman nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at him.
"You knew this?"
"I suspected."
"No."
My voice became sharper.
"You knew."
Roman didn't argue.
And somehow that hurt more.
I turned back to the file.
There were notes written by my father.
One sentence appeared repeatedly.
"Never let Preston discover Alex knows."
My heart started racing.
Discover Alex knows what?
I searched through the documents.
Then I found another file.
My name.
Inside were medical records.
Travel documents.
Old photographs.
And one page that made my hands go numb.
A letter.
Written by my father.
"Alex, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep you away from them."
I sat down.
My legs couldn't support me.
The letter continued.
"I need you to understand one thing. Preston Hayes did not enter your life by accident."
I stopped reading.
Because suddenly every moment came back.
The first time we met.
The places he suggested.
The questions he asked.
The way he always wanted to know about my work.
My contacts.
My family.
I thought he was interested in me.
Maybe he was collecting information.
The letter continued.
"He was sent to find what I hid before I disappeared."
I looked at Roman.
"What did my father hide?"
Roman walked closer.
But before he answered, every monitor in the basement suddenly turned on.
The room filled with light.
A video started playing.
My father appeared again.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
"Alex."
His voice filled the room.
"If you found this room, then Roman kept his promise."
I looked at Roman.
He closed his eyes.
A reaction.
A confirmation.
My father continued.
"Roman, if you are watching this, you already know the truth."
Roman whispered:
"Richard..."
The video continued.
"I know you blame yourself."
Roman looked away.
My heart slowed.
Because I had never seen Roman react to anything.
Not once.
But my father's voice broke through him.
"You tried to save me."
The room went silent.
Then my father said:
"But you failed to save the person who mattered most."
The video glitched.
The screen went black.
Then one final image appeared.
A photograph.
A woman.
Standing beside my father.
I knew her.
Everyone knew her.
Because she was supposed to be dead.
My mother.
I covered my mouth.
No.
That wasn't possible.
My father disappeared.
My mother died years later.
That was the story.
The story everyone gave me.
But the photograph showed something impossible.
My parents together.
Alive.
And behind them was another person.
Someone standing in the shadows.
Someone whose face was hidden.
A name was written below the picture.
I moved closer.
My breathing stopped.
Because the name belonged to the person I trusted more than anyone.
The basement door suddenly slammed shut.
The lights went off.
May you like
And from the darkness behind me, a familiar voice whispered:
"Alex... you finally found me."
