Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The screen flickered.
The image was blurry.
But Adrian Vale knew that face.
He knew it before his mind could accept it.
Before his heart could deny it.
Before logic could explain what his eyes were seeing.
The man standing behind Marco in Sofia's bedroom was someone Adrian had watched being buried.
Someone whose funeral he had attended.
Someone whose death certificate he had signed with his own hand.
His brother.
Elias Vale.
Adrian didn't move.
The warehouse disappeared around him.
The dust.
The cold air.
The hidden room.
Everything became meaningless.
Because the impossible was standing on a screen in front of him.
Beatrice whispered his name.
"Adrian..."
He didn't answer.
He couldn't.
For years, Elias had been gone.
The official story was simple.
A car accident.
A mountain road.
No survivors.
Adrian had been twenty-eight years old when he lost his younger brother.
Elias wasn't like him.
He wasn't feared.
He wasn't cold.
He was the person who made Adrian remember there was still kindness in the world.
And now he was standing inside Sofia's bedroom.
Alive.
The screen suddenly went black.
The room returned to darkness.
Then the red door unlocked.
Slowly.
Adrian immediately reached for his weapon.
Beatrice stepped closer.
"Wait."
"No."
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Something colder.
"Nobody moves until I know what is happening."
The guards surrounded them.
The door opened.
But nobody was there.
Only another envelope.
Adrian picked it up.
This time there was no handwriting.
Only a symbol.
The same symbol that appeared on the financial records Elena had discovered.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Elias holding Sofia as a baby.
Adrian's hand tightened.
On the back of the photograph were six words.
"He never left his family."
Beatrice looked at the picture.
"Adrian..."
He looked at her.
"You knew."
Her face changed.
"No."
"You knew Elias was connected to this."
"I knew his name."
"That's not an answer."
Beatrice looked down.
"I knew Elena trusted him."
Adrian felt something break inside him.
Another secret.
Another person who knew more than him.
"Everyone knew except me."
Beatrice didn't defend herself.
Because she knew he was right.
For three years, Adrian had believed he was protecting his family.
But everyone around him had been protecting secrets from him.
He turned back to the screen.
"Elias is alive."
Beatrice nodded slowly.
"But why?"
That was the question.
The one question that mattered.
Why fake his death?
Why disappear?
Why let Adrian believe he was gone?
A sound came from Adrian's phone.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
One sentence.
"Your brother didn't betray you. He saved you."
Adrian stared.
Another message appeared.
"Ask him why Elena trusted him more than you."
His expression darkened.
Beatrice saw it.
"What did they say?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he didn't want to say it out loud.
The words hurt too much.
He had spent three years believing Elena's disappearance was a betrayal.
Now he was learning everyone had been hiding something bigger.
They returned to the mansion immediately.
The security team had restored the systems.
But something felt wrong.
Too quiet.
Adrian walked through the hallway toward Sofia's room.
Marco was unconscious outside the door.
Not injured badly.
Just knocked out.
Adrian crouched beside him.
"What happened?"
Marco slowly opened his eyes.
"Boss..."
"Who took her?"
Marco looked confused.
"I don't know."
Adrian stood.
That answer wasn't acceptable.
Marco was one of the best security professionals he had.
Nobody got past him.
Nobody.
Unless they were allowed inside.
Adrian entered Sofia's bedroom.
The window was open.
The curtains moved slightly.
Sofia's bed was empty.
But she wasn't taken.
Not yet.
Because on the pillow was a note.
Adrian picked it up.
His hands stopped when he saw the handwriting.
Elena.
No.
Impossible.
But he knew every curve of those letters.
Every line.
Every way she wrote his name.
The note said:
"Adrian, if you are reading this, then you finally know what I couldn't tell you."
He continued.
"The person who destroyed our family was never outside our home."
His breathing slowed.
"Look at the people who stayed."
The note ended there.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just one final sentence.
"Trust the one you never thought you could."
Adrian lowered the paper.
Beatrice watched him.
"Who?"
He looked at the note again.
"I don't know."
And that scared him.
Because Adrian Vale always knew.
He knew enemies.
He knew strategies.
He knew how people lied.
But now the person who hurt him was someone close enough to be trusted.
Someone who had stayed.
Someone who had watched his family fall apart.
He walked into his office.
Every photograph.
Every document.
Every memory.
He started searching.
Not for proof.
For patterns.
The betrayal had been years in the making.
It wasn't random.
Someone had planned every step.
Elena's disappearance.
Elias's fake death.
The financial fraud.
Beatrice entering his home.
Everything connected.
Hours passed.
Then Adrian noticed something.
A small detail.
A photograph from his wedding.
Everyone was smiling.
Elena.
Elias.
Victor.
His closest people.
But someone was missing.
Someone who should have been there.
He zoomed in.
On the reflection behind them.
A person standing outside the wedding hall.
Watching.
Adrian's face changed.
Because he recognized the person.
A person who had never been considered a suspect.
Someone who had been with him from the beginning.
He printed the image.
Beatrice looked at it.
Then she went completely still.
"You know him?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he did.
More than anyone.
The door opened.
A voice came from behind them.
"Adrian."
Both of them turned.
Victor Crane stood there.
Calm.
Uninjured.
As if nothing had happened.
Adrian immediately reached for his weapon.
Victor raised his hands.
"Before you do something you regret, you need to understand."
Adrian stared at him.
"You were behind it."
Victor looked tired.
"No."
"Elena trusted you."
"Yes."
"Then explain why she disappeared."
Victor was silent.
That silence said everything.
Beatrice stepped forward.
"You know where she is."
Victor looked at her.
And for the first time, fear appeared on his face.
"She told you?"
Adrian noticed.
"What did you say?"
Victor looked at Adrian.
"She didn't disappear."
The room froze.
Adrian's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Then where is my wife?"
Victor swallowed.
"She's been hiding from the person who wanted her dead."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Who?"
Victor looked toward the security cameras.
Then back at him.
"The person who has been watching this house for three years."
A loud alarm suddenly echoed through the mansion.
All screens in the office turned on.
Every camera feed appeared.
The front gate.
The hallway.
Sofia's room.
The garden.
Then one final camera activated.
A hidden camera Adrian had never known existed.
The feed showed a person standing inside the mansion basement.
Holding Sofia's old childhood blanket.
Victor whispered:
"No..."
Adrian stared at the screen.
Because the person slowly turned around.
May you like
And the face appeared.
It was someone who had been living under Adrian's roof the entire time.
