Chapter 1 - The Resignation Letter That Changed Everything

A woman in a black dress placed a resignation letter on a mafia boss's desk and whispered:

"I'm done."

When Roman Castell opened the envelope, he found the resignation letter from the woman who had protected his empire for five years.

But two words were written at the bottom:

"Goodbye, Roman."

Roman suddenly realized she wasn't asking for permission to leave.

Tessa Hayes had always known exactly who Roman Castell was.

She had never confused power with kindness.

She had never mistaken fear for respect.

Roman was a man who walked into a room and changed the temperature.

People stopped talking when he entered.

Men twice his age lowered their voices around him.

Enemies disappeared when they pushed too far.

But Tessa had seen something nobody else had.

She had seen Roman sitting alone after midnight, staring at financial reports with blood still on his shirt.

She had seen him carry the weight of an empire that was built before he was old enough to understand what it would cost him.

She knew the rumors.

She knew the truth.

The Castell organization controlled shipping routes, private security companies, and businesses across three countries.

Some called Roman a criminal.

Some called him a businessman.

Tessa knew he was both.

And for five years, she had been the person standing between him and complete disaster.

She had fixed missing shipments.

Found traitors hiding inside his company.

Rebuilt financial systems after his enemies attacked his accounts.

She had become the person Roman trusted more than anyone.

But trust was not the same as choosing someone.

That was the lesson she learned the night she saw the engagement announcement.

The first thing she noticed was not the diamond.

It was Roman's name beside another woman's.

Chloe Bishop.

Daughter of one of the most powerful families controlling the eastern shipping network.

The perfect alliance.

The perfect marriage.

The perfect business decision.

Tessa had stared at the announcement on her computer screen for almost ten minutes.

Then she closed the file.

Opened a blank document.

And wrote her resignation.

No emotional speech.

No accusation.

No explanation.

Just two sentences.

I am resigning from my position effective immediately.

Thank you for the opportunity.

She printed it.

Signed it.

And waited until the engagement celebration began downstairs.

The entire building was filled with music.

Hundreds of guests arrived.

Politicians.

Business partners.

Powerful families.

Everyone celebrating Roman Castell's future.

Nobody noticed the woman leaving the empire quietly.

Nobody except Roman.

Because Roman always noticed her.

That was the problem.

Tessa stood inside his office with her coat over her shoulders and her handbag in her hand.

The city lights reflected behind her through the giant glass windows.

The resignation letter sat perfectly centered on his desk.

Exactly where he would see it.

She wanted him to understand.

She wanted him to feel what it meant to lose something important.

The office door opened.

Tessa didn't turn around.

She already knew.

Roman's footsteps were impossible to mistake.

Slow.

Controlled.

Confident.

Until tonight.

Tonight, they stopped.

"Tessa?"

She looked back.

Roman stood there wearing the charcoal tuxedo he had chosen for his engagement party.

His bow tie was slightly loose.

His expression was colder than usual.

But his eyes gave him away.

Confusion.

"Tessa, what is this?"

He held up the letter.

"My resignation."

Roman stared at the paper.

Then at her.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Tessa almost laughed.

"It wasn't a question."

Roman walked toward the desk.

"You can't leave tonight."

"I can leave whenever I want."

His jaw tightened.

"You know too much."

The words hurt more than she expected.

Because they proved exactly what she feared.

Not that he needed her.

That he needed what she could do.

Tessa picked up her handbag.

"I deleted my access. The transition files are in your safe."

Roman looked at her.

"You planned this."

"Yes."

"How long?"

She paused.

"Since I saw the ring."

For the first time that night, Roman became completely silent.

The engagement ring.

The thing he never thought would matter.

The thing that changed everything.

"Tessa..."

"No."

Her voice stayed calm.

That made it worse.

"You don't get to say my name like everything is normal."

Roman stepped closer.

"The marriage isn't what you think."

Tessa looked at him.

"You are engaged."

"The marriage is strategic."

"Congratulations."

"It prevents a war."

"And that is supposed to make me stay?"

Roman looked away.

That small movement told her everything.

Because Roman Castell never avoided anything.

Except the truth.

"If I told you the reason before the announcement..." he said quietly.

Tessa waited.

"I knew you would tell me not to do it."

"Because you knew it was wrong."

"Because I knew you."

The room became silent.

Tessa hated that those words still affected her.

Five years.

Five years standing beside him.

Five years knowing every weakness behind the strongest man in the city.

Five years loving someone who never realized she was waiting.

"I am not spending another year organizing your life while another woman wears your ring."

Roman's expression changed.

"Tessa."

"No."

She walked toward the door.

This time Roman didn't stop her.

He looked at the lock.

Then unlocked it.

Immediately.

A quiet apology.

Too late.

"I shouldn't have locked it."

Tessa looked at him.

"No. You shouldn't have."

She opened the door.

Then stopped.

Because despite everything...

Part of her wanted him to say something.

Something real.

Something that would make leaving impossible.

But Roman only said:

"Be careful."

Tessa smiled sadly.

"That is the only thing you know how to say when you are afraid."

Then she left.

The ballroom downstairs was brighter than his office.

That was what bothered her.

Everyone was smiling.

Everyone was celebrating.

Nobody knew anything was falling apart.

Chloe Bishop stood beside Roman's father, accepting congratulations.

She looked perfect.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Untouchable.

Tessa moved toward the exit.

Then a voice stopped her.

"Miss Hayes."

She turned.

A man she had never seen before stood behind her.

Navy suit.

Expensive watch.

Calm smile.

"I am Elias Thorne."

Tessa didn't shake his hand.

"Should I know you?"

"No."

His smile faded slightly.

"But you should know what I know."

Tessa became still.

"About what?"

"About the marriage."

Her eyes narrowed.

"What about it?"

Elias glanced toward Roman.

Then lowered his voice.

"The Bishop family didn't create an alliance."

He placed a black card beneath her tablet.

"They created an entry point."

Tessa didn't touch it.

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because you are the only person in this room who understands what is actually happening."

He stepped away.

Before disappearing into the crowd, he said:

"When Roman discovers the truth, it will already be too late."

Tessa picked up the card.

There was only one sentence written on the back.

ASK WHO SELECTED THE WEDDING SECURITY COMPANY.

Her heart stopped.

Because she knew something immediately.

The wedding security company had been approved by Roman himself.

And only three people had access to that decision.

Roman.

Chloe.

And someone inside his organization.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

Roman.

Come to my office.

Now.

Tessa looked across the ballroom.

Roman was already watching her.

But behind him...

May you like

Someone else was watching too.

And that person knew exactly who she was.
