Chapter 10 - The Last Secret of the Viscari Family

The message disappeared from the screen.
But nobody moved.
You found the truth too late.
Those six words remained in Matteo Viscari’s mind.
Because for nine years, he had believed the worst moment of his life was the night Leo died.
He was wrong.
The worst moment was realizing Leo had been fighting alone while Matteo was standing beside the person who destroyed him.
The security room was silent.
Victor stared at the black monitor.
Adrian stood near the doorway.
Clara watched Matteo.
She knew him well enough now to notice the smallest changes.
The tightened jaw.
The controlled breathing.
The way his hands remained still because he was forcing them to.
He was angry.
But underneath the anger was something else.
Pain.
“Where is Daniel?”
Matteo’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
Victor looked at the security screens.
“He’s not in the building.”
“When did he leave?”
Victor checked the records.
“Twenty minutes ago.”
Matteo looked at him.
“Convenient.”
Victor nodded.
“He knew.”
Clara looked between them.
“How?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Because Daniel was never just watching the company.”
Everyone turned toward him.
“He was watching Matteo.”
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Leo discovered Daniel had access to private company information.”
“Financial information?”
“Everything.”
Adrian looked at the old documents.
“Schedules. Security routes. Employee records. Personal information.”
Clara felt a chill.
“He wasn’t trying to steal the company.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Matteo.
“He was trying to understand how to control you.”
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
Daniel knew Matteo’s habits.
His weaknesses.
His grief.
His loyalty.
He knew the one thing Matteo would never question.
Family.
Clara looked at the documents again.
“Why wait nine years?”
Adrian answered immediately.
“Because Matteo was too powerful after Leo died.”
A pause.
“Daniel couldn’t destroy him directly.”
“So he changed him.”
Victor looked down.
“He isolated him.”
Clara understood.
The fake orders.
The cruel decisions.
The reputation.
Everything had been designed to make people afraid of Matteo.
And eventually…
make Matteo afraid of everyone.
“He wanted you alone,” Clara said.
Matteo looked at her.
“Yes.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Matteo picked up his phone.
“Find Daniel.”
Victor stopped him.
“Matteo.”
He looked over.
“If Daniel knows we found out, he won’t run.”
“What will he do?”
Victor’s expression became serious.
“He will remove the evidence.”
Matteo immediately understood.
The archive.
Leo’s files.
The original proof.
“He’s going there.”
They moved quickly.
The underground archive was empty when they arrived.
Too empty.
The door was open.
The lights were off.
Matteo entered first.
Clara followed.
Adrian and Victor stayed behind.
Inside, the old files were scattered across the floor.
Someone had searched everything.
Then Clara saw something.
“Matteo.”
She pointed.
A small recorder sat beside the destroyed documents.
Matteo picked it up.
A voice played.
Leo.
Everyone froze.
“Matteo.”
His brother’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re hearing this, then you finally know.”
Matteo closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“I know you’re angry.”
A small pause.
“You’ll want revenge.”
Clara looked at Matteo.
But Leo continued.
“Don’t.”
The word was simple.
But powerful.
“Because revenge is what they want.”
Matteo listened.
“They want you to become someone who destroys everything around him.”
The recording became quieter.
“Don’t let them win twice.”
Matteo lowered his head.
Leo’s voice continued.
“The person who betrayed us believed one thing.”
A pause.
“That family is just a weakness.”
The recording stopped.
Everyone remained silent.
Then another sound came.
A slow clap.
From the doorway.
Daniel Viscari stood there.
No fear.
No panic.
Just a calm smile.
“Leo always was dramatic.”
Matteo turned.
“Daniel.”
His cousin looked around the archive.
“So this is where everything ends.”
Clara stepped forward.
“You killed him.”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“No.”
The answer surprised everyone.
“I didn’t kill Leo.”
Matteo stared.
“Then who did?”
Daniel looked at him.
“That’s the question you should have asked nine years ago.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“Leo was always smarter than you.”
Matteo’s expression hardened.
“He knew people.”
“He understood emotions.”
Daniel smiled.
“But he made one mistake.”
“What?”
“He trusted you.”
The words angered Matteo.
But Daniel continued.
“He knew I was dangerous.”
A pause.
“He knew Victor was hiding something.”
His eyes moved toward Victor.
“He knew Adrian disappeared.”
Then back to Matteo.
“But he believed you would find the truth.”
Daniel laughed softly.
“He never understood how much guilt could blind you.”
Matteo stepped forward.
“You used my grief.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed my company.”
“Yes.”
“You killed my brother.”
Daniel’s smile faded.
“No.”
A long pause.
“I killed his chance to survive.”
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at the recorder.
“Leo found everything.”
He continued.
“He found the money transfers. The hidden accounts. The people involved.”
Clara watched him.
“Then why wasn’t he killed immediately?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because Leo made a deal.”
Matteo froze.
“What deal?”
Daniel smiled.
“He protected Matteo.”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked directly at him.
“Leo knew an attack was coming.”
Matteo stopped breathing.
“What?”
“Yes.”
Daniel continued.
“He knew.”
The truth hit harder than anything before.
“He could have escaped.”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“But he didn’t.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at Matteo.
“Because he knew they would come after you next.”
Matteo looked away.
All those years.
All that guilt.
All that pain.
Leo had not died because Matteo failed him.
Leo had died because he protected him.
Daniel continued.
“But Leo left one mistake.”
“What?”
“He left too many people who loved him.”
The archive doors suddenly opened.
Security officers entered.
Daniel looked surprised.
Only slightly.
Victor held a device in his hand.
“The confession was recorded.”
Daniel looked at him.
Victor continued.
“You should have learned.”
Daniel laughed.
“You?”
He looked at Victor.
“The man who lied for nine years?”
Victor accepted it.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor looked at Matteo.
“Because Leo asked me to protect his brother.”
Matteo looked at him.
And for the first time, he understood.
Everyone had failed him in different ways.
But some people had been trying to save him.
The police arrived shortly after.
Daniel was taken away.
The investigation revealed everything.
The stolen money.
The fake orders.
The hidden accounts.
The betrayal that lasted nearly a decade.
Months passed.
Viscari Holdings changed.
Not overnight.
Not perfectly.
But honestly.
Matteo removed the old systems that allowed people to hide behind power.
He reopened investigations.
Restored employees who had been wrongfully removed.
And for the first time in years…
he stopped trying to punish himself.
One evening, Clara walked into his office.
She stopped.
Because something was different.
Matteo was sitting behind his desk.
But Leo’s chair was empty.
Clara smiled.
“You finally stopped using the forbidden chair?”
Matteo looked up.
“I never liked that chair.”
She laughed.
“You absolutely did.”
“No.”
He looked at the old photograph.
“I think Leo just wanted me to remember something.”
“What?”
Matteo looked at her.
“That life was supposed to be lived.”
Clara smiled softly.
A real smile.
The kind Matteo had forgotten existed.
He picked up the silver pen.
The one Leo had left behind.
Then he placed it back on the desk.
“You know.”
Clara looked at him.
“I was right about the lamp.”
Matteo stared.
Then something unexpected happened.
He laughed.
Not a small accident.
Not a surprised sound.
A real laugh.
The same laugh that had shocked everyone months before.
But this time, nobody froze.
Nobody feared it.
Because everyone finally understood.
Matteo Viscari was not becoming weaker.
He was finally becoming himself again.
And somewhere, in the memory of the brother who saved him…
May you like
Leo was laughing too.
