Chapter 3 - The Man Waiting Outside the Door

The voice on the other side of the door said my name again.

“Tessa.”

Not loudly.

Not aggressively.

Almost gently.

That was what made it worse.

A person who wanted to hurt you didn’t always sound dangerous.

Sometimes they sounded familiar.

Sometimes they sounded like someone who knew exactly how to make you lower your guard.

I looked at Dominic.

His expression had changed completely.

The calm control was gone.

Not replaced by panic.

Something colder.

Recognition.

“You know him.”

It wasn’t a question.

Dominic didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who is he?”

His eyes remained fixed on the door.

“Someone who should not know where you are.”

The answer made my anger rise.

“Again.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

“Again, you’re giving me half of the truth.”

“Tessa.”

“No.”

I held up the memory card.

“I am done standing in rooms where everyone knows what’s happening except me.”

The knocking came again.

Three times.

Slow.

Patient.

Like whoever stood outside knew they had all the time in the world.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Listen to me.”

I hated that part of me still listened.

“Do not open that door.”

“Who is it?”

“His name is Adrian Vale.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way Dominic said it meant everything.

“Your enemy?”

A pause.

“My mistake.”

The answer surprised me.

Before I could ask what that meant, Adrian spoke from the hallway.

“Dominic.”

His voice carried through the door.

“You always were good at protecting people.”

A pause.

“Not so good at telling them the truth.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

I noticed.

Because those words hurt.

Not because they were insulting.

Because they were true.

“Adrian.”

Dominic’s voice became colder.

“You need to leave.”

A quiet laugh came from outside.

“You know I can’t.”

“Then you know what happens next.”

The hallway went silent.

I looked at Dominic.

“What does that mean?”

He didn’t answer.

The silence told me enough.

Something had happened between them.

Something big.

Something involving Gemma.

The door handle moved.

I stepped back.

Dominic immediately moved in front of me.

The gesture was automatic.

Protective.

And I hated that I noticed how natural it seemed.

“You really think hiding her will change anything?”

Adrian’s voice came again.

“She deserves to know.”

Dominic said nothing.

“She deserves to know what you did.”

My heart dropped.

I looked at Dominic.

“What did you do?”

His eyes met mine.

And for a moment, I saw something I hadn’t seen before.

Fear.

Not of Adrian.

Of my reaction.

“Tessa.”

I shook my head.

“Answer me.”

Before he could, Adrian spoke.

“He didn’t tell you?”

The door remained closed between us.

But somehow, the stranger outside felt closer than ever.

“Of course he didn’t.”

Adrian continued.

“Dominic has always been very good at deciding which truths people can handle.”

The words hit too close.

Because I knew that feeling.

My whole life, people had decided what I could handle.

My mother.

Gemma.

Now Dominic.

“Open the door.”

Dominic said nothing.

“Open it, Dominic.”

“No.”

Another laugh.

“You still think you’re the one in control.”

The hallway became quiet.

Then Adrian said something that made Dominic’s expression change.

“Gemma didn’t disappear because she was running from me.”

My breath caught.

“She disappeared because she finally discovered what you buried.”

Dominic went still.

I looked at him.

“What did he mean?”

Nothing.

“Dominic.”

Still nothing.

The anger inside me grew.

“Tell me.”

He looked away.

That hurt more than any answer.

Because it meant there was something.

Something he didn’t want me to know.

Adrian continued.

“Your friend was smarter than both of us.”

My fingers tightened around the memory card.

“What did Gemma find?”

No answer.

Then Adrian said:

“The truth about your mother.”

Everything stopped.

The apartment disappeared for a second.

The rain.

The city.

The door.

All of it.

“My mother?”

Dominic closed his eyes briefly.

Adrian continued.

“She knew Claire wasn’t just a woman who disappeared.”

My breathing became shallow.

“Don’t.”

Dominic’s voice was dangerous now.

Not toward Adrian.

Toward the conversation itself.

“Don’t bring her into this.”

Adrian ignored him.

“She was connected to your family.”

I stared at Dominic.

“What?”

The silence was unbearable.

My mother.

Dominic.

Gemma.

All connected.

It felt impossible.

My entire life had been built around a story that might not have been true.

“My mother had nothing to do with this.”

I said it firmly.

Because I needed to believe it.

Adrian’s voice softened.

“She tried to protect you.”

That made me freeze.

“What?”

“She knew what Dominic’s family was capable of.”

Dominic stepped closer to the door.

“Enough.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became sharper.

“She knew your father was dangerous.”

I looked at Dominic.

“Your father?”

A painful silence.

Dominic finally spoke.

“My father was complicated.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“It isn’t.”

The honesty caught me off guard.

Dominic wasn’t defending his family.

That scared me more.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He looked at me.

“Because I didn’t know how.”

“You had years.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“Yes.”

The word felt like a wound.

I looked away.

Because suddenly I wasn’t just angry.

I was hurt.

The person I had slowly started believing was different had been carrying secrets about the one thing I cared about most.

My mother.

Adrian knocked again.

“Ask him about the night she disappeared.”

Dominic’s face changed.

A tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

“You were there.”

My voice was barely a whisper.

Dominic didn’t answer.

“Were you?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

The room felt smaller.

“You were there when my mother disappeared?”

“Yes.”

I stepped back.

Everything inside me screamed to leave.

To run.

To get away from the man standing in front of me.

But another part of me noticed something.

His eyes.

There was no guilt from someone hiding a crime.

There was pain.

Deep.

Old.

Unhealed.

“What happened?”

Dominic looked down.

“I tried to save her.”

The words were almost broken.

“From who?”

He looked at the door.

Then back at me.

“From the same people who are looking for you now.”

I didn’t know what to believe.

Not anymore.

The knock came again.

This time harder.

Adrian’s voice changed.

The confidence was gone.

“Tessa.”

I looked toward the door.

“Your mother left something for you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“A message.”

Dominic immediately turned.

“No.”

Adrian continued.

“She knew one day you would need the truth.”

I looked at Dominic.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“What message?”

Adrian answered:

“The one she left before she disappeared.”

Silence.

Then:

“The one Dominic never gave you.”

The room went completely still.

I looked at the man in front of me.

The man who had protected me.

The man who had lied to me.

The man who knew my mother.

And suddenly I understood.

The biggest secret was not what Gemma had hidden.

It wasn’t what my mother had done.

It wasn’t even who was hunting me.

The biggest secret was the one Dominic had carried for years.

The truth about the night my mother vanished.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

Dominic looked at me.

“Tessa…”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“But this time, you don’t get to choose what I can handle.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Dominic slowly reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Carefully preserved.

My name was written on the front.

My mother’s handwriting.

My knees almost gave out.

“I was supposed to give this to you when you were ready.”

I stared at the envelope.

“And when did you decide I was ready?”

His eyes met mine.

“When Gemma disappeared.”

The truth hit harder than I expected.

Because that meant he had always planned to tell me.

Just not until he had no other choice.

I reached for the envelope.

But before my fingers touched it—

The lights went out.

Again.

The apartment fell into darkness.

And from the hallway, Adrian whispered:

“Too late.”

A sound followed.

The elevator stopping.

Footsteps.

More than one person.

Dominic immediately grabbed my hand.

This time, I didn’t pull away.

Because whatever was coming…

May you like

Was not just after Gemma’s secret.

It was after the truth my mother died trying to protect.
