Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Locked Door

The old guest room door opened.

A woman stood inside holding a faded letter, whispering:

"Matteo... I waited twenty-five years for you to come back."

When mafia boss Matteo Vescari entered the room, he found his mother’s wedding ring lying on the table.

But beneath it was a second ring.

One that belonged to someone who was never supposed to exist.

Matteo suddenly realized the person hiding the truth was closer than he imagined.

The entire hallway became silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody dared to speak.

Because everyone inside the Vescari mansion knew one thing.

That room had been untouched for twenty-five years.

After Isabella Vescari disappeared, Matteo had locked it himself.

He had never allowed anyone inside.

Not servants.

Not security.

Not even family.

It was the last place his mother had lived before the accident that supposedly took her life.

And now someone was standing inside.

Waiting.

Matteo entered first.

I followed behind him.

Not because I was brave.

Because after everything that happened, I knew I was already part of this secret.

The room looked frozen in time.

The furniture was covered with white sheets.

The curtains were closed.

A layer of dust covered everything.

Except one place.

The chair near the window.

Someone had been sitting there recently.

Matteo saw it too.

His eyes immediately moved toward the woman standing beside the desk.

She was older.

Much older than the woman in the photographs.

But there was something familiar about her.

The way she looked at Matteo.

The sadness in her eyes.

The same sadness I had seen in my own mother’s face.

"Matteo."

Her voice broke.

"I know you hate me."

He stopped.

The color disappeared from his face.

Because he knew that voice.

Even after twenty-five years.

"Mother?"

The word came out quietly.

Almost like he was afraid saying it would make her disappear again.

Nobody in the hallway breathed.

The guards looked at each other.

Sofia covered her mouth.

And I stood there frozen.

Because the impossible thing had just happened.

Isabella Vescari was alive.

Matteo stared at her.

His entire world had been built around her death.

Every decision.

Every wall.

Every piece of anger he carried.

All of it came from losing her.

And now she was standing in front of him.

Alive.

"I don't understand."

His voice shook.

"You died."

Isabella lowered her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

He stepped closer.

"You don't get to say that."

His voice became louder.

"You don't get to stand here after twenty-five years and say you know."

The woman who had once been the most powerful man's mother looked fragile.

Human.

"I wanted to come back."

"Then why didn't you?"

She looked away.

"Because I was protecting you."

Matteo laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

"Protecting me?"

He pointed around the room.

"You let me bury you."

"I watched your funeral."

"I spent years believing I was alone."

Isabella closed her eyes.

"I know."

"Do you?"

The room went quiet.

Because that was the first time anyone had ever challenged Isabella Vescari.

Even alive, she carried a presence that made people listen.

But Matteo was no longer a child.

He was a son who had been abandoned.

"I came back because the person who destroyed our family is moving again."

Matteo froze.

"What person?"

Isabella looked at Sofia.

Then at me.

Then back at Matteo.

"The same person who wanted me dead."

Nobody spoke.

Matteo’s face hardened.

"Who?"

Isabella walked toward the desk.

She picked up the old wedding ring.

"This belonged to me."

She placed it down.

"Twenty-five years ago, someone tried to make it look like I had betrayed your father."

Matteo looked confused.

"My father?"

Isabella nodded.

"Alessandro was not the person who tried to kill me."

A long pause.

"He was the person who helped me escape."

That changed everything.

Matteo stared.

"My father?"

"He knew the truth."

"Then why did he let me believe you were dead?"

Isabella looked at the floor.

"Because we thought it was the only way to keep you alive."

I felt a chill.

"Who were you hiding from?"

Isabella looked directly at me.

And my heart sank.

Because I already knew.

The answer involved my family.

"Rosa."

My name sounded heavy.

"Your mother was the first person to discover the truth."

I swallowed.

"About what?"

Isabella walked toward the old piano.

She touched the surface gently.

"About a betrayal inside this family."

Matteo watched her.

"Who betrayed us?"

Isabella did not answer immediately.

Instead, she opened a hidden compartment beneath the piano.

Another secret compartment.

Another place where the Vescari family had hidden the truth.

Inside was a small recording device.

Old.

Damaged.

But still intact.

Matteo picked it up.

"What is this?"

"Your mother’s last message."

His eyes changed.

"My mother recorded something?"

Isabella nodded.

"She recorded it the night everything happened."

The room became silent.

Matteo pressed the button.

Static filled the air.

Then a woman’s voice appeared.

A voice from twenty-five years ago.

Isabella.

Young.

Terrified.

"If Matteo ever hears this..."

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

"I failed."

A pause.

"I trusted the wrong person."

Matteo looked at Isabella.

But she looked just as shocked as him.

Because she had never heard the recording before.

The voice continued.

"The person who betrayed us is not outside this family."

Static.

A crackle.

Then:

"They are someone Matteo loves."

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Matteo slowly turned.

His eyes moved across the room.

Across Sofia.

Across Isabella.

Across me.

Because the message had changed everything.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone loved.

A person who had spent years pretending to protect him.

Then the device made one more sound.

A final piece of audio played.

A whisper.

Barely audible.

But clear enough.

"Matteo..."

Everyone leaned closer.

The voice said one final sentence.

"The person you are looking for is standing beside you right now."

The room went completely silent.

Then every guard raised their weapons.

Not toward the door.

May you like

Not toward the window.

Toward one person.
