Chapter 6 - The Daughter Of The Man Who Built The Empire

The clinic door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Grant Mercer forgot how to breathe.

Because the person standing in front of him was the face he had seen in photographs his entire childhood.

The man everyone told him was buried.

The man whose death shaped everything Grant became.

Marcus Mercer.

His father.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

No one spoke.

Even Raymond’s name felt meaningless now.

Because the impossible had just walked into the room.

Grant stared at him.

His father stared back.

There was no dramatic smile.

No emotional reunion.

Only silence.

The silence of two people who had lost seventeen years.

Grant’s hand slowly lowered from his weapon.

“Dad?”

The word came out quieter than he expected.

Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.

Like hearing his son say that single word hurt more than anything else.

Then he opened them.

“I’m sorry.”

That was all.

Not an explanation.

Not a reason.

Just two words.

Grant laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

“Sorry?”

His voice became colder.

“You disappeared.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You let everyone tell me you were gone.”

“Yes.”

Grant stepped closer.

“You watched me build everything you left behind.”

Marcus looked at him.

“I watched you survive.”

The answer stopped him.

Because it sounded like something only a father would say.

Not a stranger.

Not a criminal.

Not a man trying to manipulate him.

A father.

But Grant had spent years learning one lesson.

Never trust what someone wants you to feel.

Especially when they were powerful enough to control the truth.

“Why?”

Marcus looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Clara.

At Evelyn.

Then back at his son.

“Because someone in this room would have killed you if I stayed.”

Everyone became silent.

Grant’s eyes moved.

“Who?”

Marcus did not answer.

That scared Grant more than if he had named someone.

“Dad.”

Marcus walked closer.

“You need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Your enemy was never trying to destroy Mercer Shipping.”

Grant waited.

“They were trying to control who inherited it.”

Grant frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“She knows.”

Every eye turned.

Evelyn froze.

Grant felt his chest tighten.

“You knew my father was alive?”

“No.”

Marcus answered before Evelyn could.

“She didn’t.”

Grant looked at him.

“Then why did you look at her?”

Marcus studied Evelyn.

“Because she was the only person who followed my instructions.”

Grant turned.

“What instructions?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

For the first time, Grant saw something he had never seen before.

Shame.

“I was supposed to find the ledger.”

Grant stared.

“What?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Your father contacted me before I applied to Mercer Industries.”

The room became silent.

Grant felt anger rising.

“So everything was planned.”

“Yes.”

“You entered my company because of him.”

“Yes.”

“You worked for me because of him.”

“Yes.”

Every answer hurt more because it was honest.

Grant looked away.

Four years.

Four years of believing he knew the woman beside him.

And now he discovered even her loyalty had a hidden beginning.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Grant.”

“No.”

His father stopped.

Grant looked at Evelyn.

“You could have told me.”

“I wanted to.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Evelyn’s voice became quiet.

“Because every time I looked at you, I saw someone who didn’t know how much danger he was in.”

Grant looked at her.

“And you decided I couldn’t handle the truth?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I decided I couldn’t lose you.”

The words hung between them.

Nobody spoke.

Even Grant had no immediate answer.

Because somewhere beneath the anger, there was something else.

Confusion.

Pain.

Something dangerously close to understanding.

Madison looked away.

Grant noticed.

“You knew too.”

Madison shook her head.

“Not everything.”

“But something.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Madison hesitated.

“My father knew your father was alive.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“Preston?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“I found out six months ago.”

Grant stared.

“And you still planned our wedding?”

Madison’s eyes filled with guilt.

“I was trying to get close enough to find proof.”

The room went quiet.

Grant looked around.

Everyone had been searching.

Everyone had been lying.

Everyone had been protecting something.

And somehow he was the only person who didn’t know the rules of the game.

Marcus walked toward the table.

He picked up the black notebook.

“This is why they were afraid.”

Grant looked at him.

“Because of names?”

“No.”

Marcus opened it.

Inside the notebook was a hidden compartment.

A small folded document.

He placed it down.

Grant looked at the paper.

A birth record.

His eyes narrowed.

“What is this?”

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

She immediately stepped back.

“No.”

Grant looked between them.

“What?”

Marcus spoke softly.

“Your father didn’t just have one child.”

The room stopped.

Grant stared.

“What are you saying?”

Marcus looked at him.

“I’m saying the Mercer family was built on a lie.”

Grant’s fingers touched the paper.

The name at the top was blurred.

But one line was clear.

Mother.

Grant looked up.

“My mother?”

Marcus nodded.

“She wasn’t the woman you were told she was.”

Grant froze.

“What?”

“Your mother discovered what Raymond was doing.”

The name hit again.

Raymond.

“He tried to silence her.”

Grant’s expression changed.

“What happened?”

Marcus looked away.

“She survived.”

Nobody moved.

Grant whispered:

“She’s alive?”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Grant stepped forward.

“Where is she?”

Before Marcus could respond, every phone in the room vibrated at the same time.

Everyone looked down.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

I FOUND THE REAL HEIR.

Grant looked at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A young woman standing outside an old Mercer property.

Same eyes.

Same hair.

Same birthmark.

Grant looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked terrified.

Because she recognized the woman.

Madison whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Grant looked at her.

“Who is she?”

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn slowly said the name she had been hiding since the beginning.

“The reason your father told me to protect you.”

The phone received one final message.

A location.

And a warning.

DON’T LET HER MEET GRANT.

Grant stared at the screen.

The address was only three miles away.

He looked toward the door.

Then back at Evelyn.

“Who is she?”

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“She is the person who was supposed to inherit everything.”

The lights suddenly went out.

A second later, the emergency system turned on.

Red lights flashed across the room.

And somewhere outside the clinic, a woman whispered Grant Mercer’s name…

before the locked door began opening from the other side.
