Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Beneath My Empire

The bedroom door opened.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like whoever was behind it already knew exactly how much fear they were creating.
My hand tightened around the weapon beneath my coat.
Elena stepped forward.
"Adrian, wait."
I didn't listen.
Nobody had survived in my world by ignoring danger.
Not once.
The darkness inside the bedroom moved.
A figure appeared.
For half a second, I prepared myself for an attack.
Then I saw who it was.
An old man.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face I recognized immediately.
My father's former accountant.
Marcus Bell.
But that was impossible.
Because Marcus Bell had disappeared thirteen years ago.
The same year everything around my family started falling apart.
The same year my mother supposedly died.
The same year my father changed from a man who loved his family into someone I barely recognized.
Marcus looked at me with sadness.
Not fear.
Sadness.
"You're finally old enough to know."
Those words made my stomach tighten.
I hated that sentence.
Because everyone who said it was always protecting a secret.
And every secret in my family had blood attached to it.
I stepped forward.
"How long have you been here?"
Marcus looked at Elena.
Then at Beatrice.
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
My anger grew.
"You were all hiding this from me."
Elena shook her head.
"We were protecting you."
I laughed quietly.
"Everyone says that."
My voice became colder.
"My father said that."
The room went silent.
Nobody defended him.
That bothered me.
Because I expected lies.
I expected excuses.
But instead, they looked like people who had been waiting years for me to finally ask the right questions.
Marcus walked toward the table.
He placed a small black folder down.
My eyes followed it.
"What is that?"
"The reason your father disappeared before his death."
I stared at him.
"My father died in front of me."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
"Then what do you mean disappeared?"
He looked directly at me.
"Your father died the day he stopped trusting everyone around him."
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because I remembered that time.
I was young.
But I remembered.
The locked office.
The late-night phone calls.
The arguments.
The way my father started checking every person around him.
Even family.
Especially family.
I always thought he was becoming paranoid.
Maybe he was.
Maybe he had a reason.
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Records.
Things I had never seen.
The first photograph was my father standing beside three people.
One was Elena.
One was Marcus.
The third person was someone I didn't recognize.
A younger man.
Standing close to my father.
Too close.
Like a trusted friend.
"Who is he?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because Marcus was not the type of man who hesitated.
"He was the person your father trusted most."
I looked at the photo again.
"Name."
Marcus looked at Elena.
She closed her eyes.
"Victor Hale."
The name meant nothing.
But the reaction around the room told me everything.
Beatrice looked down.
Marcus looked away.
My mother looked afraid.
I noticed.
And I remembered.
Fear was never random.
"What did he do?"
Marcus took a breath.
"He knew everything."
"About what?"
"Your father's empire."
I frowned.
"That's not a secret."
Marcus shook his head.
"No. Not the empire everyone saw."
He tapped the folder.
"The other one."
I stared at him.
For years, I believed my family business was simple.
Power.
Money.
Territory.
Influence.
A criminal empire built through loyalty and fear.
But Marcus was telling me there was something beneath it.
Something hidden even from me.
My own empire had a basement I never knew existed.
"What was my father hiding?"
Elena walked closer.
"Your father wasn't building an empire."
I looked at her.
"Then what was he building?"
"A shield."
The answer confused me.
"A shield against who?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus said something that changed everything.
"Against the people who built the empire before him."
The room became silent.
I looked around.
Three people who had lied to me.
Three people who had survived something I never knew existed.
And suddenly, every strange decision my father made started looking different.
The enemies he refused to name.
The alliances he suddenly broke.
The people he removed from his organization.
Maybe they weren't acts of weakness.
Maybe they were survival.
I picked up one of the documents.
It was a financial record.
My father's signature was on it.
But underneath his name was another signature.
Victor Hale.
The date was twelve years ago.
Three days before my mother's death.
My eyes narrowed.
"Why was his name on this?"
Marcus didn't answer.
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Victor was the one who arranged your mother's disappearance."
The room froze.
I looked at Elena.
She didn't deny it.
My chest tightened.
"You mean he kidnapped you?"
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"He saved me."
That was not the answer I expected.
I put the document down.
"Explain."
Elena sat slowly.
"My death was supposed to be real."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"The people coming after us needed a body."
My expression changed.
"What people?"
She looked at me.
"The people your father was trying to protect you from."
I stepped closer.
"Who are they?"
Elena's eyes filled with pain.
"Your family."
The words felt impossible.
But somehow, they made sense.
Because the worst betrayals were always close.
I looked at Marcus.
"You knew?"
He nodded.
"For years."
"And you said nothing?"
"I promised your father."
My anger exploded.
"You all keep saying my father wanted this. My father wanted that."
I grabbed the folder.
"My father is dead."
My voice echoed through the apartment.
"I'm alive."
Nobody spoke.
"So stop protecting his secrets and start telling me the truth."
Elena looked at me.
For the first time, she didn't look like my mother.
She looked like someone preparing to give me a warning.
"There is something you need to understand, Adrian."
"What?"
"Your father didn't die because someone wanted his empire."
I waited.
"He died because someone wanted what was hidden underneath it."
I looked at the folder.
The documents.
The photographs.
The names.
"What was underneath it?"
Marcus slowly reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small key.
Old.
Rusty.
With a number engraved on it.
My eyes stayed on it.
"What is that?"
Marcus placed it on the table.
"Something your father left behind."
I looked at him.
"Where?"
He hesitated.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone in the room froze.
Nobody moved.
I answered.
A voice came through.
Distorted.
Cold.
"Adrian Voss."
My grip tightened.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then the voice said:
"You opened the door your father died trying to keep closed."
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then I looked at the key.
Marcus's face had changed.
He wasn't afraid of the caller.
He was afraid of what came next.
"Where does this key go?"
He didn't answer.
May you like
Because at that moment, somewhere downstairs in the old building, a lock turned.
And someone entered the apartment carrying a box with my father's name written on it.
