Chapter 7 - The Enemy Behind the Curtain

The call lasted eleven seconds.

Eleven seconds was all it took to change the entire direction of my investigation.

Before that moment, I believed I understood the shape of the enemy.

I believed Delphine was the center.

The mastermind.

The person pulling every string.

But Clara’s final words kept repeating in my head.

“The person controlling Delphine is not her.”

That sentence was worse than any threat.

Because it meant every step I had taken had been based on the wrong assumption.

And the most dangerous enemies were not the ones you underestimated.

They were the ones you misunderstood.

Adrian drove through the city without speaking.

He knew better than to fill silence when I was thinking.

The streets passed outside the window.

People walked home.

Restaurants were full.

Cars moved through intersections.

The world continued normally while someone’s life was falling apart somewhere in the shadows.

“Where was Clara when she called?” Adrian finally asked.

“She didn’t say.”

“Can we trace it?”

“I already tried.”

“And?”

“Nothing.”

He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“That means whoever is behind this knows how to disappear.”

I looked out the window.

“No.”

Adrian glanced at me.

“What?”

“They want us to think they disappear.”

I looked at my phone.

“The person behind this wants to control the information. They don’t hide because they’re afraid.”

I paused.

“They hide because they decide what we’re allowed to see.”

Adrian was silent.

Because he knew exactly what kind of person that described.

Someone patient.

Someone intelligent.

Someone who had been planning for a long time.

We arrived at Clara’s last known location thirty minutes later.

An apartment building on the north side.

Nothing about it looked suspicious.

That was what made it suspicious.

People who lived in fear rarely chose places that attracted attention.

The building was old.

Quiet.

Normal.

Adrian and I moved quickly through the entrance.

The elevator was broken.

We took the stairs.

Third floor.

Apartment 304.

The door was slightly open.

I stopped.

Adrian immediately moved in front of me.

“Stay back.”

I ignored him.

Because if someone wanted me dead, they had already had opportunities.

This was not about killing me.

It was about sending a message.

Adrian pushed the door open.

“Clear.”

The apartment was empty.

But not untouched.

The room looked like someone had left in a hurry.

A chair was knocked over.

A coffee cup sat broken on the floor.

A child’s backpack rested near the sofa.

Clara had a daughter.

I remembered that.

Six years old.

A child who had no idea why adults kept running from things they created.

I walked deeper inside.

On the table was a notebook.

I opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Employees.

Former employees.

Hotel staff.

People who had disappeared from Kingsley Hotel one by one.

But then I saw something else.

A list of names.

Not employees.

Executives.

Investors.

Partners.

People close to my family.

At the bottom of the page was one name circled.

Victor Hale.

I stared at it.

Adrian noticed.

“You think Victor is involved?”

“I don’t know.”

That was the truth.

And I hated it.

Because for the first time in years, I did not know who deserved my trust.

A sound came from the hallway.

Adrian immediately reached for his weapon.

I turned toward the door.

A small figure stood there.

A child.

A little girl holding a stuffed rabbit.

She looked terrified.

“Are you Mr. Kingsley?”

I froze.

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My mom said if something happened, I should give this to you.”

She held out a small envelope.

I slowly walked toward her.

“What’s your name?”

“Emma.”

“Where is your mother?”

Her lips trembled.

“I don’t know.”

That answer hurt more than I expected.

I took the envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

“Don’t trust the man who says he protected your father.”

I looked at Adrian.

Neither of us spoke.

Because there was only one person who had said those words.

Victor.

Back at the hotel, we examined the flash drive.

It contained one folder.

No password.

No encryption.

Almost too easy.

I opened it.

Inside were audio recordings.

Hundreds.

The first file was dated three years earlier.

Before I met Delphine.

Before the wedding.

Before everything.

I clicked play.

A familiar voice filled the room.

My father.

My heart stopped.

“I know someone inside the company is working against me.”

I looked at Adrian.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know how far it goes.”

A second voice appeared.

Victor.

“You should tell Emmett.”

My father responded immediately.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if I’m right, he is the target.”

I closed my eyes.

The recording continued.

“Whoever is doing this understands loyalty. They understand family. They will not attack the company first.”

A pause.

“They will attack my son.”

The room felt smaller.

Because I was hearing my father predict everything.

Victor spoke again.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Protect him.”

Those words should have made me feel relief.

Instead, they made me angry.

Because Victor had failed.

Or worse.

He had been part of it.

We listened to dozens of recordings.

Most were conversations between my father and Victor.

Financial problems.

Suspicious transfers.

Hidden accounts.

But then one recording changed everything.

The date was three days before my father died.

My father sounded different.

Tired.

Afraid.

“I found the connection.”

Victor answered.

“To who?”

A long silence.

Then my father said:

“To Delphine’s mother.”

I looked up.

Adrian stopped the recording.

Neither of us moved.

Because that was the missing piece.

Delphine’s family was involved before Delphine ever entered my life.

But then my father continued.

“She doesn’t know the full truth.”

Victor asked:

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

My father’s voice softened.

“She thinks she is helping her family.”

That changed everything.

Because it meant Delphine might not be the monster I thought she was.

She might be someone who had been used.

The recording continued.

“But if she finds the file, everything changes.”

Victor asked:

“What file?”

My father answered:

“The one that proves who started this.”

The recording ended.

I went straight to Delphine.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I needed to see her reaction.

She was in her apartment packing.

Suitcases open.

Clothes everywhere.

She looked up when I entered.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

“You know.”

It was not a question.

I closed the door behind me.

“Who are you?”

Her expression broke.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Pain.

“I was hoping you would never ask me that.”

“Why?”

“Because once you knew…”

She looked away.

“There was no way back.”

I stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.”

She sat down slowly.

“My mother worked for your father.”

“I know.”

Her eyes lifted.

“You know?”

“Yes.”

She laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Of course you do.”

“Why did you come into my life?”

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear.

Real fear.

“Because I was told to.”

The words landed harder than I expected.

“By who?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your father’s closest friend.”

My expression changed.

“Victor?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

I froze.

“Then who?”

Delphine looked at me.

And said the one thing I never expected.

“Your father’s brother.”

Silence.

My father had never had a brother.

At least…

That was what I had been told.

Delphine continued.

“The man everyone thought was dead.”

I stared at her.

Because suddenly every missing piece started moving.

The money.

The threats.

The hidden files.

The manipulation.

A person who knew my family.

A person who knew my father.

A person who had been forgotten.

“Who is he?”

Delphine’s voice dropped.

“Damian Kingsley.”

The name meant nothing.

But the fear in her eyes meant everything.

And for the first time, I understood.

This was never a battle over money.

May you like

It was a battle over a family secret that someone had killed to keep hidden.

And now that secret was coming for me.
