Chapter 7 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

I didn't even realize I had dropped it until it hit the wooden floor.

Because my mind had stopped working.

The person standing beside me in that picture...

Was impossible.

I stared at the image again.

My hands were shaking.

My breathing became shallow.

"No."

The word came out before I could stop it.

Adrian moved closer.

"Sadie."

I looked at him.

"Tell me this isn't real."

His silence destroyed me.

Because Adrian Vale was a man who always had an answer.

A man who could control a room with a single look.

But now...

He couldn't even speak.

Elena picked up the photograph.

The moment she saw it, her face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"You found it."

Adrian looked at her.

"You knew?"

Elena didn't answer.

That was enough.

I looked between them.

"Someone explain."

My voice was louder now.

"Right now."

Nobody moved.

Then Elena slowly placed the photograph on the table.

"The person beside you..."

She stopped.

Like saying the name was dangerous.

"Was the reason you disappeared."

I stared at the photo.

The person beside me was a man.

Older than Adrian.

Cold expression.

Dark suit.

And standing behind us was the same house.

The same house where I had just recovered memories.

The same house where someone had locked away my past.

"Who is he?"

Adrian looked at the photograph.

Then finally said:

"My father."

The room became silent.

I looked at him.

"Your father?"

He nodded.

"Elias Vale."

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction from everyone else told me it meant everything.

Claire's face became pale.

Trevor looked away.

Even Elena looked afraid.

"What does he have to do with me?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

And I hated that.

I hated that every truth came after another question.

"He was the head of the Vale family."

"I don't care."

My voice cut through the room.

"I don't care about his power, his enemies, or his family."

I pointed at the photograph.

"I care about why I was standing next to him."

Adrian looked at me.

"Because you discovered what he was hiding."

"What?"

Elena walked toward the table.

She opened another folder.

Inside were documents.

Old photographs.

Records.

And one letter.

She placed it in front of me.

"This was written by you."

I frowned.

"No."

"Yes."

I looked at the handwriting.

My heart started beating faster.

Because I recognized it.

Not with my mind.

With my body.

Like my hands remembered writing those words.

The letter only contained one sentence.

If something happens to me, don't trust anyone in the Vale family.

I looked up.

"Why would I write this?"

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian quietly said:

"Because you found out my father was planning something."

"Planning what?"

His eyes met mine.

"The reason you lost your memories."

I felt cold.

"You think he did this?"

Adrian looked away.

"I know he did."

The room went silent.

I looked at him carefully.

"How do you know?"

For the first time...

Adrian looked guilty.

Not because of what happened.

Because of what he had hidden.

"I was there."

My chest tightened.

"You were there?"

He nodded.

"The night you disappeared."

I stepped back.

"No."

"Sadie..."

"No."

My voice broke.

"You told me someone took me."

"Someone did."

"But you were there."

His eyes closed.

"Yes."

The pain on his face almost made me stop.

Almost.

But I couldn't.

Because I needed the truth.

"What happened that night?"

Adrian took a slow breath.

And finally began.

"You called me."

I listened.

"You said you found something inside the house."

"The box?"

He nodded.

"You sounded scared."

"What did I say?"

Adrian looked at the floor.

"You said..."

He stopped.

I waited.

"You said you finally understood why my father wanted you gone."

A chill moved through me.

"And then?"

"Then the call ended."

"What happened next?"

His voice became quieter.

"I arrived twenty minutes later."

"And?"

"The house was empty."

I stared at him.

"Empty?"

"Except for you."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"You were sitting in the basement."

The room became silent.

"I found you there."

Adrian looked at me.

"You didn't know who I was."

A memory flashed.

A dark basement.

A man's footsteps.

Someone holding my face.

A voice saying:

"You never had a husband."

I grabbed my head.

"Stop."

Adrian immediately moved toward me.

"What did you remember?"

I looked at him.

"There was someone else."

Everyone froze.

"Who?"

I closed my eyes.

Trying to hold onto the memory.

A face.

A voice.

Almost there.

Then gone.

"I don't know."

Elena whispered:

"You do."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She stepped closer.

"You remember her."

My heartbeat increased.

"Her?"

Elena nodded.

"The woman who helped Elias."

I looked at the photograph.

The house.

The basement.

The missing years.

"Who was she?"

Elena looked at Adrian.

And Adrian looked like he already knew.

"No."

His voice was low.

"Don't say her name."

That scared me more than anything.

Because Adrian wasn't afraid of enemies.

He wasn't afraid of threats.

But he was afraid of a name.

I stepped toward him.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

I looked at Elena.

"Tell me."

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Victoria."

The name hit me strangely.

Not because I knew it.

Because I didn't.

But somewhere deep inside...

Something reacted.

A memory.

A feeling.

A warning.

I suddenly saw a flash.

A woman standing in the basement.

A smile.

A hand reaching toward me.

And my own voice saying:

"Why are you doing this?"

The vision disappeared.

I opened my eyes.

Everyone was watching me.

"What happened?"

I looked at Adrian.

"Victoria."

His expression changed.

"What about her?"

I swallowed.

"I remember her."

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face immediately changed.

"What is it?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

Because the call was from a number that should not exist.

A number saved under one name.

A name that made Elena step backward.

A name that made Trevor whisper:

"No..."

Adrian slowly answered.

Nobody breathed.

Then a woman's voice came through the phone.

Calm.

Familiar.

Impossible.

"Adrian."

He closed his eyes.

The voice continued.

"You spent three years hiding her from me."

Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.

"Victoria..."

A pause.

Then the woman laughed softly.

"Tell Sadie the truth."

I felt my blood run cold.

Because the next words were not meant for Adrian.

They were meant for me.

"Tell her I was the one who saved her life."

The call ended.

May you like

And at that exact moment...

The basement door behind us slowly opened by itself.
