Chapter 7 - The Truth That Set Us Free

The man standing outside my childhood home was Luca Costa.

Alive.

After seven years of believing he was gone.

After seven years of unanswered questions.

After seven years of people telling me that some things were better left buried.

I stared at the security image.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

“That’s impossible.”

Gabriel didn’t say anything.

Because he had spent seven years believing the same thing.

I looked at him.

“You thought he was dead.”

“Yes.”

“But he wasn’t.”

“No.”

The sadness in his voice told me everything.

This wasn’t the reunion he had dreamed about.

It was something else.

Something painful.

“We need to go there.”

Gabriel nodded.

This time, he didn’t argue.

The drive to my old house felt longer than it should have.

Nobody spoke.

Brutus rested in the back seat, still recovering but refusing to stay behind.

I looked out the window.

The city passed by.

The same streets I had walked through as a child.

The same places where I had grown up.

But everything felt different now.

Because the past I remembered was incomplete.

And the truth had been waiting all along.

When we arrived, the house looked exactly the same.

The old wooden fence.

The small garden my father had planted.

The front steps where I used to sit with my mother.

But there was someone standing there.

Luca Costa.

He looked older than the photograph.

Tired.

Not dangerous.

Just broken.

Gabriel stepped out of the car first.

For several seconds, neither brother moved.

Then Luca whispered:

“Gabriel.”

That single word carried seven years of pain.

Gabriel walked closer.

“You’re alive.”

Luca looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question wasn’t angry.

It was wounded.

Luca swallowed.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”

The same words Gabriel had used with me.

I felt my chest tighten.

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“You disappeared.”

“I had to.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Do you know what that did to me?”

Luca looked away.

“I know.”

The silence between them was unbearable.

Then Luca looked at me.

“Chloe.”

Hearing my name from him felt strange.

Like someone from a forgotten chapter of my life had suddenly returned.

“How do you know me?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because your father talked about you every day.”

My eyes burned.

“My father?”

Luca nodded.

“He never stopped loving you.”

We went inside.

The house smelled like memories.

Old wood.

Dust.

The faint scent of the life I thought I had lost.

Luca sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where I remembered eating breakfast with my parents.

“I owe both of you the truth.”

Nobody interrupted.

Luca looked at Gabriel.

“Seven years ago, your father and mine were both being watched.”

Gabriel frowned.

“My father?”

Luca nodded.

“The Costa family wasn’t what everyone thought.”

He looked at me.

“And your father discovered it.”

I listened carefully.

“Some people inside the organization were using the company as a cover for illegal operations. Your father found evidence.”

“The list.”

“Yes.”

Luca continued.

“He wanted to expose them.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

“Because he realized someone close to him was involved.”

My stomach tightened.

“My uncle.”

Luca nodded.

“He wasn’t the leader.”

“Then who was?”

Luca looked at Gabriel.

And Gabriel already knew.

“Your father.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Gabriel.

“Your father?”

He closed his eyes.

Luca explained.

“Gabriel’s father created the system. But Gabriel never knew how deep it went. He tried to change things.”

Gabriel looked away.

“I failed.”

“No.”

Luca shook his head.

“You saved more people than you know.”

I watched Gabriel.

The man everyone feared.

The man who believed he was responsible for everything.

For the first time, I understood.

He had spent years punishing himself for something he didn’t cause.

Luca continued.

“The night everything happened, your father planned to release the evidence.”

“But someone attacked.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Luca looked at me.

“Your uncle.”

My heart sank.

“He wanted the evidence destroyed.”

“What happened to my father?”

Luca’s face softened.

“He survived.”

I closed my eyes.

The words I had waited years to hear.

“He survived?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Luca hesitated.

Then he reached into his coat.

He placed a letter on the table.

My hands trembled.

“This was written for you.”

I touched the envelope.

My father’s handwriting.

Again.

But this time, it wasn’t a warning.

It was a goodbye.

I opened it.

My father’s words filled the silence.

My beautiful Chloe,

If you are reading this, then I know you are old enough to understand why I left.

I need you to know something first.

I never abandoned you.

My vision blurred.

Leaving you was the hardest thing I ever did.

But staying would have put a target on your back.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

Gabriel promised me he would protect you.

I looked up.

Gabriel looked away.

If he is beside you now, then he kept his promise.

Trust the man who chooses your safety over his own happiness.

My eyes moved lower.

I hope one day you forgive me.

And I hope you know that every day I was away, I loved you.

The letter ended there.

I held it against my chest.

Seven years of pain.

Seven years of anger.

Slowly beginning to heal.

The truth changed everything.

The people responsible were found.

The evidence my father collected was released.

The corrupt parts of the organization collapsed.

Gabriel rebuilt everything from the ground up.

No more hidden operations.

No more secrets.

No more people disappearing.

Luca stayed.

For the first time in years, brothers sat together without carrying the weight of the past.

And Brutus?

Brutus recovered completely.

The dog who started everything became the most spoiled creature in Chicago.

He had a habit of sleeping near the clinic entrance.

Like he was still protecting the place where Chloe saved him.

And Chloe?

She finished her veterinary degree.

She turned West Side Animal Emergency into one of the most respected animal hospitals in the city.

Not because of Gabriel’s money.

Not because of his influence.

Because she earned it.

Every single day.

Months later, I stood outside the clinic.

The same place where everything began.

Gabriel walked beside me.

No expensive suit.

No intimidating expression.

Just Gabriel.

The man behind the reputation.

“You’re quiet.”

I smiled.

“I’m thinking.”

“That’s dangerous.”

I looked at him.

“You know, when we first met, I thought you were terrifying.”

“And now?”

I looked toward Brutus sleeping in the sunlight.

“Now I think you’re just a man who needed someone to tell him the truth.”

A small smile appeared.

“You were very good at that.”

“I still am.”

“I noticed.”

We stood there for a moment.

Then Gabriel reached for my hand.

Slowly.

Giving me the choice.

I looked at him.

The man who had started as a stranger.

The man who had hidden the truth.

The man who had spent years trying to protect me.

And the man who had finally learned that love wasn’t about controlling someone’s life.

It was about trusting them with the truth.

I held his hand.

“You know I’m still going to say no sometimes.”

He smiled.

“I know.”

“And you’re okay with that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because the first time you said no was the first time someone made me want to become better.”

For once, I had no argument.

Behind us, Brutus barked.

We both laughed.

A simple sound.

A normal moment.

Something we had all spent years trying to find.

A life without fear.

A life without secrets.

A life where the truth no longer hurt.

And that was the greatest thing my father had left me.

Not money.

Not answers.

May you like

Not revenge.

A chance to finally live.
