Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Asked The Devil For Help

A woman in a white dress grabbed a stranger’s arm inside a crowded gala and whispered: "Please pretend you know me." When mafia boss Adrian Vale arrived, he noticed a broken diamond bracelet beside the woman’s feet. But three words were engraved inside the clasp: "Property of Hart." Adrian immediately knew she was running from someone.

The first thing I learned about powerful men was that they never looked surprised.

They were trained not to.

They could walk into a room full of enemies and smile. They could hear threats disguised as compliments and respond with a calm handshake. They could lose millions of dollars before breakfast and still order coffee like nothing had happened.

But Adrian Vale was different.

Everyone in the Meridian Grand Hotel knew when he entered.

Not because anyone announced him.

Not because he demanded attention.

Because the entire room changed.

The conversations became quieter.

The laughter became more careful.

People who had been standing confidently moments before suddenly remembered they had somewhere else to be.

I had heard his name before that night.

Everyone had.

Adrian Vale was the kind of man people only talked about when they were sure he wasn't listening.

Some called him a businessman.

Others called him something much darker.

I didn't know which rumors were true.

I only knew I needed him.

And that was the most terrifying part.

I was standing near the edge of the ballroom, holding a champagne glass I hadn't touched, pretending I wasn't watching the man across the room.

Ethan Cross.

My ex-boyfriend.

The man who had once promised me forever.

The man who had spent the last six months proving that forever could feel like a prison.

He was smiling.

That was the worst part.

He always smiled when he was hurting me.

Not because he was happy.

Because he liked knowing he could.

Ethan was surrounded by investors, politicians, and wealthy families who only saw the version of him he wanted them to see.

Charming.

Successful.

Perfect.

Nobody saw the messages.

Nobody heard the threats.

Nobody knew how many times he had told me that leaving him would ruin my life.

"You don't understand how this world works, Selena."

That was what he always said.

"You belong beside me."

I used to think love meant fighting for someone.

Until I realized I was the only one fighting.

That night, I wasn't supposed to be there.

Ethan had invited me because he wanted to show everyone that we were still connected.

A performance.

A statement.

A reminder that even after I ended things, he still believed he owned part of me.

I came because I wanted one final conversation.

One chance to end everything quietly.

I was wrong.

The moment Ethan saw me near the entrance, his smile disappeared for half a second.

Then it returned.

That was when I knew.

He wasn't surprised.

He had expected me.

My fingers tightened around the glass.

I looked toward the exit.

Too many people.

Too many cameras.

Too many of Ethan's friends watching.

I needed a way out.

Then I saw him.

Adrian Vale.

Standing alone near the bar.

Black suit.

No tie.

A watch that probably cost more than my apartment.

A face that showed nothing.

But his eyes noticed everything.

Including me.

I don't know what made me move.

Maybe fear.

Maybe desperation.

Maybe the small part of me that wanted Ethan to finally understand he couldn't control every moment of my life.

I crossed the room.

Every step felt impossible.

When I reached Adrian, I stopped.

He looked down at me.

Not like Ethan did.

Not like I was something to possess.

Like he was trying to understand a problem.

"What are you doing?" he asked quietly.

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

I swallowed.

"Please pretend you know me."

For the first time that night, Adrian looked slightly surprised.

Only slightly.

A normal person would have asked questions.

A normal person would have walked away.

Adrian Vale was not normal.

His eyes moved past me.

Toward Ethan.

Then back to me.

"He is the reason you're afraid."

It wasn't a question.

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

Adrian already knew.

A slow smile appeared on his face.

Not a kind smile.

Not a cruel one.

A dangerous one.

"You came to a room full of powerful people and chose the most dangerous man here to hide behind."

"I didn't know who else to choose."

His eyes stayed on mine.

"That's either very brave or very stupid."

"Probably stupid."

For some reason, that made him smile.

A real one.

Small.

Almost invisible.

Then Ethan appeared.

"Selena."

The sound of my name made my entire body tense.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he noticed.

Ethan stopped when he saw who I was standing beside.

The confidence disappeared from his face.

"Adrian Vale."

Ethan forced a laugh.

"I didn't realize you knew my girlfriend."

Adrian looked at him.

Then at me.

Then back at Ethan.

"Interesting."

Ethan frowned.

"What's interesting?"

Adrian took the champagne glass from my hand and placed it on the table beside us.

A simple movement.

But somehow the entire room felt like it had changed.

"She never said she was yours."

The silence between them was immediate.

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Be careful."

Adrian tilted his head slightly.

"That's usually advice people give right before they make a mistake."

I should have been afraid.

Maybe I was.

But standing beside Adrian felt different.

Ethan made me feel smaller.

Adrian made me feel like I could breathe.

That was when I realized something dangerous.

I wasn't afraid of Adrian.

I was afraid of how safe I felt around him.

Ethan stepped closer.

"Selena, we're leaving."

I looked at him.

"No."

One word.

But it changed everything.

Ethan stared at me like he had never heard me speak before.

Adrian looked at me carefully.

Almost like he was seeing someone new.

Then he leaned slightly closer.

"Do you want him gone?"

I whispered:

"Yes."

Adrian looked toward Ethan.

Then back at me.

"Then don't ask me to pretend."

I frowned.

"What?"

His voice lowered.

"Ask me for help."

I didn't understand.

"You don't even know me."

"No."

His eyes held mine.

"But I know fear."

The music continued around us.

People continued laughing.

The world continued pretending everything was normal.

But something had shifted.

Adrian Vale had just offered me a way out.

And I had just stepped into his world.

I knew there was a price.

There was always a price with men like him.

The question was whether I could survive paying it.

Later that night, Adrian took me away from Ethan's reach.

Not because I belonged to him.

Because he said I deserved to choose.

For the first time in months, someone had given me a choice.

I thought that was the beginning of my freedom.

I didn't know it was the beginning of a war.

Because when Adrian's security team checked the small purse I had carried into the gala, they found something hidden beneath the lining.

A folded piece of paper.

A name written in black ink.

A name I had never seen before.

Adrian looked at the paper.

Then his expression changed.

May you like

Because the name written there was not Ethan Cross.

It was his own.
