Chapter 2 - The Room Behind the Bride

The entire ballroom heard the voice.
Dante's heart stopped.
“Vanessa?”
No answer.
Marco turned toward the closed bridal-suite door.
His guards raised their weapons.
Clara stepped closer to Dante.
“That sounded like her.”
Dante did not respond.
He knew Vanessa's voice.
That had sounded like Vanessa.
But something was wrong.
The tone had been too weak.
Too distant.
Marco kicked the door.
Nothing.
“Again.”
Two guards hit it together.
The lock splintered.
They disappeared inside.
Dante rolled toward the elevator rather than wait for someone to carry him.
Clara followed.
“Stay downstairs,” he said.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“That wasn't a request.”
“Vanessa made me promise.”
“Vanessa isn't giving orders tonight.”
Clara stared at him.
“Then why are you still looking for her?”
The elevator doors opened.
Dante almost told Marco to remove her.
Instead he wheeled inside.
“Fine.”
Clara entered.
The doors closed.
Dante glanced at her.
“You speak to everyone like this?”
“Only men who need it.”
“Dangerous habit.”
“You hired dangerous people.”
“I didn't hire you.”
She smiled slightly.
“No. Your bride did.”
The doors opened on the second floor.
Marco stood outside.
“She isn't here.”
Dante's face darkened.
“You heard her.”
“We all did.”
“Then find her.”
Marco led him into the suite.
The room had been destroyed.
Drawers pulled open.
Wedding gifts scattered.
Vanessa's veil torn.
A champagne glass broken against the wall.
Dark red drops marked the carpet near the dressing table.
Dante stared at them.
“Blood.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Not enough for a serious injury.”
Clara walked toward the balcony.
Dante followed.
The doors opened onto a narrow stone terrace overlooking the gardens.
No one.
Marco pointed to a wireless speaker hidden behind a curtain.
“The voice came from that.”
Dante's anger turned cold.
“A recording.”
“Yes.”
Someone had wanted him upstairs.
Why?
Clara examined the speaker.
“There is something taped underneath.”
Marco removed a folded note.
He handed it to Dante.
Three handwritten words.
CHECK THE CHAIR.
Dante stared at the message.
Marco immediately crouched beside Dante's wheelchair.
They had already found one envelope.
Now they searched again.
Clara circled behind him.
“Wait.”
She pointed near the right wheel.
“There.”
A thin strip of black tape covered a compartment beneath the frame.
Marco pulled it loose.
A tiny flash drive dropped into his hand.
Dante stared at it.
“Laptop.”
Marco opened one on the dressing table.
“No network.”
“Good.”
He inserted the drive.
One video file appeared.
DANTE_ONLY.mp4.
Dante's face tightened.
“Play it.”
Vanessa appeared on-screen.
She wore jeans and a sweater.
Not her wedding dress.
The recording had been made earlier.
“Dante,” she began, voice shaking, “if you're seeing this, I didn't make it to the altar.”
He stopped breathing.
“I need you to know one thing first. I did not leave you for Julian.”
Dante closed his eyes briefly.
Vanessa continued.
“He contacted me six months ago. He said someone inside your family was planning to remove you permanently.”
Marco glanced toward Dante.
Vanessa looked terrified in the recording.
“I didn't believe him at first. Then he showed me documents. Accounts. Transfers. Medical records.”
Dante's eyes opened.
Medical records?
“He told me the shooting that put you in the wheelchair wasn't random.”
The room went silent.
Clara looked at Dante.
His expression became stone.
Two years earlier, Dante had been shot leaving a restaurant in Queens.
Police called it a failed robbery.
Dante's men had killed the gunman before questioning him.
The case had died.
Vanessa continued.
“Someone paid the shooter.”
Dante's hand curled into a fist.
“And Julian believes the same person is planning to kill you tonight.”
Marco cursed softly.
Vanessa leaned closer to the camera.
“I agreed to pretend I was leaving with Julian because we needed them to believe you were isolated.”
Dante stared.
The betrayal had been staged?
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I know what this will do to you. I know what people will say. I'm sorry.”
Dante remembered Julian's phone call.
“She chose me.”
Half true.
Julian had taken Vanessa.
But not as a lover.
As protection.
Vanessa continued.
“The key marked 11-17 opens a private evidence locker at Grand Central. Julian has the location. Do not trust anyone who tries to take the key from you.”
The screen flickered.
Then Vanessa's expression changed.
She glanced off-camera.
Someone had entered the room while she recorded.
Her face went pale.
“Dante, if I don't get out—”
The video ended.
Marco tried reopening it.
Nothing.
Dante wheeled backward.
“Where is Julian?”
“No trace.”
“His phone?”
“Off.”
“Cars?”
“We're checking traffic cameras.”
Clara looked at the blood.
“If Vanessa planned to leave with Julian, why was there a fight?”
Exactly.
Dante turned toward the ruined room.
Someone had reached Vanessa before Julian did.
“Marco.”
“Yes?”
“Find out who entered this wing between six and seven.”
Marco hesitated.
“Security system was disabled for twenty-three minutes.”
“By whom?”
“We don't know yet.”
Dante looked toward the door.
Salvatore stood there.
His silver cane tapped softly against the floor.
“I warned you.”
Dante's voice sharpened.
“You knew.”
“I knew Vanessa had secrets.”
“You knew about Julian?”
Salvatore stepped inside.
“No.”
Dante watched him carefully.
“And the shooting?”
Salvatore's jaw tightened.
“What shooting?”
“The one that put me in this chair.”
Silence.
Marco stared at the old man.
Dante continued.
“Vanessa says it was arranged.”
Salvatore frowned.
“Vanessa says many things.”
Clara spoke.
“She risked her life to record them.”
Salvatore turned toward her.
“You've been here less than a day. Stay out of family matters.”
Clara did not move.
Dante almost admired that.
“Answer me, Uncle.”
Salvatore sighed.
“We suspected the shooting was commissioned.”
Dante's blood ran cold.
“You knew?”
“We had no proof.”
“You said it was random.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“From tearing the family apart over suspicions.”
Dante stared at the man who had raised him.
“You should have told me.”
“You were learning how to live in a wheelchair. I wasn't going to hand you a war at the same time.”
Dante rolled closer.
“Who did you suspect?”
Salvatore looked away.
That was answer enough.
“Julian?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Salvatore remained silent.
Dante's patience snapped.
“Who?”
Salvatore looked directly at him.
“Your father.”
The room froze.
Dante stared.
“My father died twenty years ago.”
Salvatore's face remained unreadable.
“Yes.”
“Then explain yourself.”
“I cannot.”
Dante laughed once.
It contained no humor.
“You cannot?”
“Not here.”
“This entire night has been people telling me not here, not now, not yet.”
Salvatore lowered his voice.
“Because some truths get people killed.”
Dante leaned forward.
“I am already being hunted.”
Salvatore's eyes showed something Dante had rarely seen there.
Fear.
“Exactly.”
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Clara's.
She looked confused.
“I don't recognize the number.”
Dante held out his hand.
“Speaker.”
Clara answered.
“Hello?”
Static.
Then a man's voice.
Julian.
“Clara?”
Dante nodded for her to keep talking.
“Yes.”
“Is Dante with you?”
“Yes.”
Julian exhaled.
“Good. Listen carefully. Vanessa is alive.”
Dante closed his eyes.
Relief hit him so hard it nearly hurt.
“Where?” Clara asked.
“I can't tell you.”
Dante spoke.
“Julian.”
Silence.
Then:
“Hello, cousin.”
Dante's voice became cold.
“You have ten seconds.”
“I staged the call because we needed the traitor to believe you were publicly broken.”
“You succeeded.”
“I am sorry.”
“Where is Vanessa?”
“She was taken before I reached the bridal suite.”
Dante's hand tightened around the phone.
“By whom?”
“I don't know.”
“You had better learn.”
“I already learned something worse.”
Dante glanced at Salvatore.
“What?”
“The locker key isn't for Grand Central anymore.”
“What does that mean?”
“They moved the evidence.”
“Who?”
“The person who arranged your shooting.”
Dante's jaw clenched.
Julian continued.
“And Dante... don't let Uncle Salvatore leave the room.”
Every eye turned toward Salvatore.
The old man's face went gray.
Dante whispered:
“Why?”
Julian answered.
“Because the account that paid the shooter was opened in his name.”
Salvatore stepped backward.
Marco reached for his gun.
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot exploded in the darkness.
Clara screamed.
When the emergency lights came on, Salvatore was lying on the floor.
May you like
And the door behind him was swinging open.
Someone had just escaped.
