Chapter 6 - The Mother Behind The Door

“Camila.”
I froze.
I had imagined this moment thousands of times.
When I was younger, I imagined my mother walking through the front door after a long trip.
I imagined her calling my name.
I imagined running into her arms.
But I never imagined it like this.
Not inside a mansion filled with secrets.
Not after discovering my entire life had been carefully hidden from me.
Not after believing she was dead.
The woman standing in the doorway looked older.
Different.
But I knew her.
I knew her eyes.
I knew the small scar near her eyebrow.
I knew the way she looked at me like she was trying to memorize every detail of my face.
“Mom?”
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Her eyes filled with tears.
And for a second, neither of us moved.
Five years of grief.
Five years of questions.
Five years of missing someone who was standing right in front of me.
Then anger came back.
Stronger than the shock.
“You’re alive.”
My voice sounded empty.
Elena Williams looked down.
“Yes.”
I laughed softly.
It wasn’t happiness.
It was pain.
“That’s all you have to say?”
Her lips trembled.
“Camila…”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.”
The woman who raised me looked like she wanted to come closer.
But she stopped.
Maybe she knew she didn’t deserve to.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“When?”
She looked away.
“Every day.”
“Every day for five years?”
Silence.
That was the answer.
I wiped my eyes quickly.
I refused to cry in front of her.
Not yet.
“Why?”
One word.
But it carried everything.
Why did you leave?
Why did you let me bury you?
Why did you let me think I was alone?
Why did you trust strangers more than your own daughter?
Elena took a slow breath.
“Because if you knew I was alive, you would have been killed.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
Her voice changed.
Not like a frightened woman.
Like someone who had spent years running.
“The people hunting us don’t threaten people, Camila. They erase them.”
I looked at her.
“The Black Serpent?”
Her expression changed.
She knew I knew.
“How much did Lorenzo tell you?”
“Not enough.”
A painful smile appeared on her face.
“That sounds like Lorenzo.”
I frowned.
“You know him.”
“Yes.”
“How well?”
She didn’t answer.
And once again, silence became the enemy.
Before I could ask more, footsteps echoed in the hallway.
Lorenzo appeared.
His gun was lowered.
But his expression was impossible to read.
When he saw Elena, he stopped.
The two people who had spent twenty-three years believing the other was gone finally stood face to face.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Then Elena whispered:
“You look older.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
“And you look alive.”
The pain in his voice was obvious.
I looked between them.
There was history here.
A history nobody wanted to explain.
“You both knew each other.”
Neither denied it.
That hurt more.
Lorenzo looked at me.
“Camila—”
“No.”
I held up my hand.
“I’m done hearing half the truth.”
The room became silent.
“I want everything.”
Lorenzo and Elena exchanged a glance.
A silent conversation.
A decision.
Finally, Elena nodded.
“You deserve to know.”
We moved to the private study.
A room I had never entered before.
The walls were covered with old books and photographs.
But one photograph caught my attention.
A younger Lorenzo.
A younger Matteo.
My mother.
All together.
Happy.
Like they were a family.
I stared at it.
“You were all close.”
Elena nodded.
“We were.”
“Then why did nobody tell me?”
Her expression changed.
“Because your father was the reason everything fell apart.”
I looked at her.
“My father?”
Lorenzo became still.
This was the first time anyone had brought him up directly.
I noticed.
And so did Elena.
“You never told her?”
Lorenzo looked away.
“I didn’t know if she was ready.”
I almost smiled.
“Apparently nobody thinks I’m ready for anything.”
Elena looked at me sadly.
“Your father’s name was Adrian.”
I waited.
Nothing.
The name meant nothing.
“He worked with Matteo.”
“Was he part of the mafia?”
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
“He was a journalist.”
I blinked.
“A journalist?”
“Yes.”
My mother sat down slowly.
“Adrian was investigating the Black Serpent before anyone knew they existed.”
“And you?”
“I helped him.”
“Why?”
She looked at me.
“Because I believed someone had to expose them.”
I looked at Lorenzo.
“And your family?”
His face hardened.
“My father was connected to them.”
The room went quiet.
The truth finally began forming.
Not completely.
But enough.
“My family built power by making deals with dangerous people,” Lorenzo said. “Matteo discovered the truth. Your parents helped him gather evidence.”
“Then what happened?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Elena spoke.
“Your father was killed.”
My breath stopped.
I had spent my entire life wondering why nobody talked about him.
Why his name disappeared.
Why there were no photographs.
“He was murdered because of the information he had.”
“And my mother?”
Elena looked down.
“They came for me next.”
The room felt smaller.
“I escaped.”
I stared at her.
“You escaped and left me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I left you with someone I trusted.”
“Who?”
She looked at Lorenzo.
My heart sank.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Elena nodded.
“Lorenzo.”
I looked at him.
“You knew?”
His silence answered.
“You protected me?”
“Yes.”
“But you never told me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Lorenzo looked at me.
“Because your mother made me promise.”
I turned back to Elena.
“You asked him to lie to me.”
“I asked him to keep you alive.”
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But seeing her face made everything complicated.
Because beneath all the secrets, I saw something familiar.
My mother.
The woman who held my hand when I was scared.
The woman who stayed awake when I had nightmares.
The woman who taught me kindness.
She was still there.
Just buried under years of fear.
Suddenly, every light in the study went out.
The room went dark.
A second later, alarms exploded throughout the mansion.
Lorenzo immediately stood.
Everyone changed.
The emotional moment disappeared.
Survival took over.
“What happened?” Elena asked.
Lorenzo looked at his phone.
His face turned cold.
“They breached the east gate.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
Lorenzo didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
Matteo appeared at the study entrance.
His face was serious.
“They found us.”
A loud crash echoed from downstairs.
Glass breaking.
Doors opening.
Footsteps.
Many footsteps.
Lorenzo grabbed my hand.
“Stay close.”
I looked at him.
For the first time, I didn’t pull away.
Because I understood something.
Whatever happened next…
We were all connected.
My mother.
Lorenzo.
Matteo.
Me.
The past had finally caught up with us.
We moved toward the hidden passage behind the bookshelf.
Elena entered the code.
The wall opened slowly.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
It showed the four of us standing in the study.
Taken moments ago.
From inside the room.
Below the picture were five words.
“I was always here.”
May you like
I looked up.
Because someone was already inside the hidden passage with us.
