Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden in the Recording

The voice disappeared.

The basement went silent.

Not the kind of silence that felt peaceful.

The kind that came right before something broke.

I stood frozen beside the desk.

My father’s words repeated inside my head.

Do not trust Marcus.

Because the man standing beside you was the one who opened the door for them.

I looked at Marcus.

Then at Adrian.

Neither man moved.

Neither man spoke.

For the first time since I entered that hidden room, I saw fear on both of their faces.

Not fear of enemies.

Fear of the truth.

"What does that mean?"

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

Adrian looked at the recording device.

Then at Marcus.

"Explain."

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes stayed on the black box.

Like it had just brought back something he had spent years trying to forget.

"I don’t know."

I almost laughed.

"You don’t know?"

My anger finally broke through.

"My father’s voice just accused you of helping the people who took him, and you don’t know?"

Marcus looked at me.

"I know what I saw."

"Then tell me."

A long pause.

Then Marcus spoke.

"Your father trusted the wrong people."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who?"

Marcus looked toward the hidden door.

"The same people who are outside right now."

A loud impact shook the basement.

Someone hit the door.

The old wood cracked.

They were trying to get in.

Adrian immediately moved.

He grabbed the files from the desk and shoved them into a bag.

"We leave."

I stared at him.

"You’re not going to explain?"

His eyes met mine.

"Not here."

That answer made something inside me snap.

"No."

Everyone stopped.

I grabbed the recording device.

"No more secrets."

Adrian looked at me.

"We don’t have time."

"I waited twelve years."

My voice shook.

"But apparently everyone else knew the truth."

Another impact hit the door.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

I didn’t care.

"You knew my father."

Adrian stayed silent.

"You knew he disappeared."

Silence.

"You knew I was looking for answers."

His expression changed.

A small crack in the armor.

"I watched you search."

My chest tightened.

"What?"

"I watched you look for him."

The room went quiet.

"Then why didn’t you help me?"

Adrian looked away.

"Because every person who searched for Daniel ended up dead."

The words landed heavily.

I stared at him.

"Everyone?"

He nodded.

"My father."

"Your father?"

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

"Daniel."

I looked between them.

The two most dangerous men in the room.

Both connected to my father.

Both carrying pieces of a story I never knew existed.

"Tell me everything."

Adrian looked at the door.

Then back at me.

"I was twenty-eight when I met your father."

His voice became quieter.

"At that time, I wasn’t the person you see now."

I listened.

Because for the first time, Adrian wasn’t speaking like a mafia boss.

He was speaking like someone remembering who he used to be.

"My father controlled the organization. I was expected to follow him."

Marcus looked down.

"Until Daniel found out what they were doing."

"What were they doing?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then he answered.

"Using people."

The words sounded simple.

But the way he said them told me they weren’t.

"They created fake identities. They erased records. They made people disappear."

My stomach turned.

"And my father found out?"

Adrian nodded.

"Daniel discovered a list."

"What kind of list?"

"Names."

He looked at me.

"People who were supposed to vanish."

A chill moved through me.

"Was my name on it?"

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My hands went cold.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Daniel tried to expose them."

"Then why didn't he?"

Marcus looked at the floor.

"Because someone betrayed him."

I looked at him.

"You?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not dangerous.

Just tired.

"I thought I was protecting him."

Adrian’s expression hardened.

"You let them find him."

Marcus looked at him.

"And you let them believe he was dead."

The accusation hung between them.

I looked at Adrian.

"What does that mean?"

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

"Adrian."

His eyes finally met mine.

"I knew Daniel was alive after he disappeared."

The words destroyed the last bit of certainty I had.

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

"You knew?"

He nodded.

"I found evidence."

"And you didn’t tell me?"

"I was trying to find him first."

"Twelve years?"

His silence hurt more than any answer.

"You had twelve years."

Adrian looked down.

"I had twelve years of watching people die."

The door shook again.

A crack appeared near the handle.

But nobody moved.

Because something worse than the people outside was happening.

The truth was coming out.

And none of us were ready.

"Where is he?"

I whispered.

Adrian looked at me.

"I don’t know."

I stared at him.

"You said you found evidence."

"I found where he was taken."

My heartbeat stopped.

"Where?"

Adrian reached into the bag.

He pulled out an old photograph.

A building.

A warehouse.

A location written on the back.

I took it.

My fingers trembled.

Because I recognized the place.

Not from my memories.

From my dreams.

The same building that appeared every time I remembered the night my father disappeared.

The same place I had drawn as a child without knowing why.

"He was there."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"Is he alive?"

No one answered.

And that was the answer I feared.

A gunshot echoed outside.

The door lock broke.

Adrian grabbed my hand.

This time, I didn’t pull away.

Not because I trusted him.

Because someone was coming.

And I knew I needed him.

Marcus moved toward the opposite wall.

"There’s another exit."

Adrian looked at him.

"You knew?"

Marcus nodded.

"Daniel built it."

Of course he did.

My father had hidden everything.

Rooms.

Messages.

Secrets.

Even escape routes.

The three of us moved through the hidden passage behind the office.

Titan followed.

The basement door exploded behind us.

Voices shouted.

They had entered.

We moved faster.

The passage became narrower.

Darker.

Then Titan stopped.

His ears lifted.

Adrian noticed.

"What is it?"

The dog walked toward the wall.

He sniffed.

Then scratched.

Again.

Another hidden door.

Adrian looked confused.

"This wasn’t here before."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Daniel."

He whispered.

"He must have changed the plans."

Adrian pushed against the wall.

Nothing happened.

Then I noticed something.

A small mark.

Carved into the brick.

A symbol.

The same one.

But underneath it were letters.

My father’s handwriting.

My name.

I touched the carving.

The wall suddenly moved.

A hidden room opened.

Inside was a single chair.

A table.

And a person sitting in the darkness.

Alive.

Waiting.

The person slowly lifted his head.

May you like

And whispered:

"Emily."
