Chapter 6 - The Secret Behind MRL 27B

Miriam whispered, “She died when we were seventeen.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No. Father told us she died.”
Miriam stared at him.
“You believed him.”
“So did you.”
Her twin’s name was Mara.
Theodore Vale had separated the girls after their mother’s death.
Miriam was sent to medical school.
Mara supposedly died in a car accident.
There had been no body.
Only Theodore’s word.
Isabella sat down heavily.
“Mara.”
“You knew her?” Adrien asked.
“She worked with Lucian.”
Miriam looked stunned.
“My sister knew Lucian?”
“She helped create MRL.”
The truth rearranged itself.
MRL did not mean Moretti Recovery Line.
Not originally.
Mara.
Reyes.
Lucian.
MRL.
Three people.
One escape network.
Twenty-seven B had been their last operation.
The night Adrien and Camila entered Mercy General.
“What does B mean?” Elena asked.
Isabella looked at Mateo.
“Baby.”
The code had never described a shipment.
It described two children whose lives needed to disappear from Theodore Vale’s reach.
Adrien and Camila.
One born to Isabella.
One born to Theodore’s hidden son’s girlfriend.
Two babies.
One hospital.
One night.
Lucian had arranged new identities.
But Vittorio intervened.
He took Adrien and raised him as his own son, believing a Moretti name would protect him.
Camila was sent away with another family.
The plan worked.
Until Camila grew up.
Until she had Elena.
Until Theodore’s trust quietly transferred to Elena after Camila’s death.
Elena stared at Isabella.
“My mother died in a car accident.”
“Yes.”
“Was it an accident?”
Isabella did not answer.
Elena stood despite the pain.
Adrien immediately moved toward her, then stopped before touching her.
She noticed.
“Help me.”
He offered his arm.
She took it.
Isabella finally spoke.
“No.”
Elena’s face crumpled.
Adrien caught her.
“Who killed her?”
“We never proved it.”
“Who ordered it?”
“We suspected Mara.”
Miriam recoiled.
“My sister?”
“Mara changed.”
Isabella explained that after years inside Theodore’s organization, Mara stopped believing people could simply escape it.
She wanted to take control.
Lucian wanted to destroy it.
Their alliance broke.
When Theodore died, Mara disappeared.
Then Camila died.
Then Vittorio.
Then Isabella vanished.
One by one, everyone who knew MRL 27B was removed.
Except Lucian.
“Where is he?” Adrien asked.
Isabella shook her head.
“He contacts me. I never contact him.”
“When will he call?”
“When he believes it’s safe.”
Adrien looked around the room.
“So never.”
Elena returned to bed.
Mateo slept peacefully against her.
His innocence made the surrounding secrets seem obscene.
“I want out.”
Isabella looked at her.
“You can’t simply refuse the trust.”
“Watch me.”
“If you renounce it, control passes to Mateo.”
“Then he renounces it.”
“He is a newborn.”
Adrien understood the trap.
“Who controls it until he’s an adult?”
Isabella looked at Marcus.
“The nearest adult Vale trustee.”
Marcus went pale.
“Me.”
Exactly.
If Elena relinquished ownership, Marcus gained temporary control.
Someone had designed the trust to keep power inside the bloodline.
Marcus sat.
“I don’t want it either.”
Adrien believed him.
Perhaps for the first time.
Detective Keller returned.
“We searched Miriam’s house.”
Miriam looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because your sister knew your identity.”
They had found photographs.
Someone had been watching Miriam for months.
One image showed her entering Mercy General.
Another showed Marcus.
Another showed Elena.
Then Keller placed the final photograph down.
Adrien stared.
It showed him standing outside Elena’s old Baltimore apartment.
Six months earlier.
Elena turned toward him.
“You said you stopped following me.”
“I did.”
“This is before that.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the date.
It was taken the night they had fought.
The night Elena realized Adrien’s men knew every place she went.
The night she decided to leave him.
On the back, someone had written:
HE IS BECOMING VITTORIO.
Adrien read it.
His face changed.
Mara had been watching him too.
Perhaps waiting for him to become the kind of man she could manipulate.
Or destroy.
Keller received another message from her team.
A vehicle had been identified leaving Mercy General after Isabella’s abduction.
Registered to a shell company.
The company belonged to a trust.
The Vale trust.
Marcus technically controlled the paperwork.
“I never bought that vehicle.”
Keller nodded.
“I believe you.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever did this wants us to believe you did.”
Adrien looked toward the door.
A hospital orderly stood outside.
When Adrien looked at him, the man walked away.
Too quickly.
Adrien moved.
“Security.”
The orderly ran.
Hospital officers chased him through the corridor.
He abandoned his cart and disappeared into a stairwell.
Inside the cart they found no weapon.
Only a sealed envelope.
Addressed to Elena.
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Camila holding Elena as a newborn.
On the back:
YOUR MOTHER CHOSE THE WRONG MORETTI.
Elena turned the photograph over again.
Something was tucked behind it.
A key.
A small brass key engraved with a number.
27B.
Isabella stared at it.
“I know that key.”
“To what?” Adrien asked.
Her eyes moved toward the sealed lower level.
“The room Lucian told me never to open.”
Then the hospital lights went out.
Emergency lights flashed red.
May you like
A lock clicked somewhere in the corridor.
And from inside Mateo’s supposedly empty nursery, a woman began singing the lullaby Elena’s dead mother used to sing.
