Chapter 3 - The Woman Rafael Had Trusted

Rafael left for Bedford twenty minutes later.
He did not go alone.
The caller had demanded it.
Rafael ignored the demand.
Men who insisted on isolation rarely did so for honorable reasons.
Nico drove the second vehicle three hundred yards behind him with no headlights once they left the highway.
Daniel stayed at the mansion.
Meredith stayed too.
Not because Rafael trusted either of them.
Because Lily did not need more movement.
More doors.
More adults whispering.
Before leaving, Rafael went to the library.
Lily was curled beneath a blanket on the couch with Teresa beside her.
The teddy bear was under her chin.
Rafael sat.
“I have to go out for a little while.”
Her eyes opened wider.
“You promised.”
“I promised I wouldn’t leave you tonight.”
“You’re leaving.”
The accusation was quiet.
That made it worse.
Rafael leaned forward.
“I am going somewhere because I think it will help me understand what happened to you.”
She stared at him.
“Are you coming back?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
Rafael had no good answer.
He had spent his life making promises as if force could guarantee outcomes.
Children demanded something more honest.
“I don’t know everything,” he said. “But I know I’m going to try very hard.”
Lily thought about that.
Then she nodded.
“Bring Mr. Buttons.”
Rafael looked at the teddy bear.
“No.”
Lily pulled him closer.
She whispered something into the bear’s ear.
Then held it out.
Rafael took it.
“What did you tell him?”
“That you get scared too.”
Rafael almost smiled.
“Does he believe that?”
“No.”
“Smart bear.”
Lily gave the smallest laugh.
It nearly destroyed him.
He carried the teddy bear out of the house.
The Bedford property stood beyond iron gates on twelve wooded acres.
It had once belonged to Rafael’s uncle.
A man who believed power was measured by how many people feared saying your name.
Rafael had inherited the estate after that man died.
He hated the place.
That was why he used it for storage.
No memories.
No guests.
No reason to visit.
Until tonight.
The front door was unlocked.
Rafael entered.
Dust lay across most surfaces.
But not all.
A narrow path had been disturbed recently.
He followed it through the kitchen.
Down the basement stairs.
At the bottom was a corridor.
Three doors.
Black.
Gray.
Blue.
Rafael stopped.
The blue door was new.
He knew because he had never approved it.
He reached for the handle.
Locked.
Nico appeared silently behind him.
“Move.”
He used a compact tool on the lock.
Ten seconds.
A click.
The door opened.
The room beyond was not a cell.
That somehow made it worse.
It had been designed to look like a child therapist’s office.
Small table.
Coloring books.
Two chairs.
Soft rug.
A shelf of toys.
A hidden camera mounted behind a smoke detector.
Rafael stepped inside.
On the table sat a folder.
LILY VANCE.
He opened it.
Photographs.
Lily entering the building in Greenwich.
Lily crying in this room.
Lily holding a crayon.
Lily speaking to someone outside the frame.
Under each photograph were typed notes.
Subject demonstrates attachment instability.
Subject expresses irrational fear of female guardian.
Subject reports fabricated punishment scenarios.
Rafael’s hands trembled.
Someone had been creating a record.
Not of what Lily experienced.
Of what they wanted a judge to believe she experienced.
Nico removed the smoke detector.
“There’s storage.”
He connected the camera.
Videos appeared.
Rafael watched the first.
Meredith walked Lily into the room.
Rafael stopped breathing.
The time stamp showed eight days earlier.
Meredith sat across from Lily.
A man entered.
Dr. Elias Brenner.
The psychologist named in the petition.
Brenner asked questions.
“Does your father spend nights away?”
Lily nodded.
“Does he ever frighten you?”
“No.”
“Does he become angry?”
“Sometimes.”
“Has he ever made someone cry?”
Lily looked toward Meredith.
“I don’t know.”
Meredith leaned forward.
“Remember what we talked about.”
Lily’s face changed.
Rafael gripped the table.
The recording continued.
Brenner asked, “Do you think your father would choose work over you?”
Lily whispered, “No.”
Meredith said, “Lily.”
The child looked down.
Then she changed her answer.
“Maybe.”
Rafael turned away.
Nico paused the video.
“You want to stop?”
“No.”
They watched another.
This time Lily sat alone.
Brenner told her Rafael had agreed she might need “special school.”
Lily cried.
She asked to call him.
Brenner refused.
Then Meredith entered and hugged her.
That was the method.
Cause fear.
Then become comfort.
Rafael knew it because men in his old world used the same tactic.
Break trust.
Offer rescue.
Create dependence.
His fiancée was doing it to his daughter.
Nico opened another folder.
Financial transfers.
Brenner had received payments through a consulting company.
The source was hidden behind layers of corporations.
But Nico recognized one.
“Harlan.”
Rafael turned.
“Samuel?”
“One of his client accounts.”
Rafael stared at the screen.
His attorney was involved.
But something did not fit.
Meredith had behaved cruelly.
No question.
She had taken Lily to the office.
No question.
But why?
Money?
Control?
The trust?
Rafael opened the final video.
Meredith was alone with Brenner.
She looked furious.
“You said she would only be here an hour.”
Brenner shrugged.
“We need stronger documentation.”
“She’s terrified.”
“That helps.”
Meredith stood.
“I’m done.”
Brenner laughed.
“You’re done when Harlan says you’re done.”
Rafael leaned closer.
Meredith’s face was pale.
“I agreed to the guardianship petition. I did not agree to hurting her.”
Brenner replied, “You agreed to what you were paid to agree to.”
Meredith looked toward the hidden camera.
Almost directly at it.
“Rafael will find out.”
Brenner smiled.
“By then he’ll be facing a federal indictment.”
The room went silent.
Nico replayed the line.
Rafael did not move.
An indictment.
That changed the shape of the plan.
If Rafael were arrested before the wedding, Lily’s temporary guardianship could become contested.
If Meredith married him first and had documented authority, she could petition the court.
If Lily was characterized as unstable, her testimony could be dismissed.
If Samuel became trust administrator during Rafael’s legal crisis, they could control access to a fortune.
But why build the case around Meredith?
Rafael looked through the documents again.
Then he saw it.
A date.
The guardianship hearing had already been tentatively scheduled.
Three days after the wedding.
Someone had expected Rafael to disappear before then.
“Nico.”
“Yes.”
“Check federal warrants.”
“Already running.”
Nico’s phone lit up.
No warrants.
No charges.
But an investigative query had been made against one of Rafael’s companies two months earlier.
By someone inside the Department of Justice.
The query had been withdrawn.
Rafael looked back at the frozen image of Meredith.
“You think she was being used?”
Nico answered carefully.
“I think she participated.”
That mattered.
A victim could also be guilty.
Meredith may have been threatened or manipulated.
She had still lied to Lily.
Still taken her to Brenner.
Still packed the suitcase.
Still stood on the stairs and called the child hysterical.
Rafael would not let fear erase responsibility.
He closed the folder.
“Take everything.”
They returned to the mansion after midnight.
Meredith was sitting in Rafael’s office.
Her phone remained sealed on the desk.
Daniel stood by the window.
Teresa had taken Lily upstairs.
Rafael placed the folder before Meredith.
Her face collapsed.
“You went there.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the photographs.
Then the videos.
“You watched them?”
“Yes.”
Meredith closed her eyes.
Rafael sat opposite her.
“Why?”
She said nothing.
“Why?”
“I thought I could control it.”
“Control what?”
“Harlan.”
Rafael leaned back.
“You worked with Samuel.”
“He approached me eight months ago.”
Daniel looked stunned.
Meredith continued.
“He knew things about my family.”
“What things?”
“My brother owes money. A lot of money.”
“To whom?”
“I don’t know.”
“Try again.”
Meredith looked at him.
“People connected to you.”
Rafael’s face hardened.
“No one connected to me collects through Samuel Harlan.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“What did he ask you to do?”
“At first? Nothing criminal. He wanted information. Your schedule. Your travel. Which attorneys you spoke to.”
“And you gave it to him.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“He said if I married you, my brother’s debt would disappear.”
Rafael stared at her.
“And Lily?”
Meredith’s voice broke.
“That came later.”
Rafael stood.
She did too.
“I never intended for Brenner to frighten her.”
“You told her I wanted to send her away.”
“Harlan told me I had to make her believe the placement was real.”
“You packed her suitcase.”
“Yes.”
“You forged my signature?”
“No.”
Rafael watched her carefully.
“I don’t believe you.”
“I didn’t.”
“Who did?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who put the documents in my safe?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who cloned Daniel’s fingerprint?”
“I don’t know.”
Rafael slammed his hand against the desk.
Everyone jumped.
Except Meredith.
She started crying.
“I don’t know because Harlan never told me everything.”
Rafael’s voice dropped.
“Then tell me something useful.”
Meredith wiped her face.
“There was someone else.”
“Who?”
“I never saw him.”
“What do you mean?”
“Harlan took calls. He called him ‘the partner.’”
Rafael stared at her.
“What partner?”
“I don’t know.”
“Meredith.”
“I don’t know his name!”
Rafael turned away.
Then Meredith whispered, “But Lily does.”
He turned back.
“What?”
Meredith looked terrified.
“The last time we went to Bedford, Brenner left the door open. Someone came downstairs.”
“Who?”
“I didn’t see his face. I was in the hall.”
“And Lily?”
“She did.”
Rafael’s pulse changed.
“What did she say?”
Meredith hesitated.
Rafael stepped closer.
“What did my daughter say?”
Meredith looked at Daniel.
Then at Rafael.
“She said she knew him.”
A chill moved through the room.
Rafael’s voice was almost inaudible.
“Who?”
Meredith answered.
“She called him Uncle.”
Rafael stopped breathing.
Because Lily had only ever called one man Uncle.
A man Rafael had trusted enough to name as her godfather.
Nico’s phone began ringing.
He looked at the caller ID.
His expression changed.
“Rafael.”
“What?”
Nico held up the phone.
“It’s him.”
The screen showed the name.
May you like
GABRIEL VANCE.
Rafael’s older brother had been dead for nine years.
