Chapter 14 - The Truth That Could Destroy Them All

“Me.”
My mother’s word hung in the cold air.
Nobody moved.
Dominic stared at her.
Vincent looked away.
Even Maria seemed unable to meet my eyes.
I felt something inside me crack.
“You?”
My mother nodded.
“I ordered your father’s death.”
Vincent closed his eyes.
Dominic stepped forward.
“Which father?”
My mother looked at him.
“Vincent.”
The world went silent.
I looked at Vincent.
He didn't deny it.
“You killed him?”
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he was going to take you.”
“That isn't enough.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to say that.”
“I know.”
I stepped closer.
“You let me believe my father abandoned me.”
“I did.”
“You let me believe you died.”
“Yes.”
“You let Dominic believe his entire childhood was real.”
“Yes.”
“You let Ethan destroy my life.”
“I didn't know Ethan would go that far.”
“But you knew he was involved.”
My mother hesitated.
“Yes.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Then what exactly were you protecting?”
She looked at me.
“You.”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“You were protecting your secrets.”
Her face fell.
“You're right.”
That answer stopped me.
I expected excuses.
I expected another lie.
Instead, she simply stood there and accepted the accusation.
Vincent finally spoke.
“She made the decision because I was going to take you away.”
“You were my father.”
“Yes.”
“You had that right.”
“I thought I did.”
My mother turned toward him.
“You were being hunted.”
“I could have protected her.”
“No.”
“You don't know that.”
“I know exactly what would have happened.”
Her voice became sharper.
“Michael had people inside your organization. Robert had people inside mine. If you took Clara, they would have followed you.”
Vincent looked at me.
“I still should have tried.”
My chest tightened.
“Why didn't you?”
He swallowed.
“Because Evelyn told me you were safer with her.”
I stared at my mother.
“You made that decision for everyone.”
“Yes.”
“Even me.”
“Yes.”
“And Isabella?”
My mother lowered her eyes.
“She died before I could save her.”
Maria began crying quietly.
I looked at her.
“What about Sofia?”
Maria wiped her face.
“She became Isabella because the real Isabella was gone.”
“So all those years…”
“I needed a name to hide behind.”
I closed my eyes.
Twenty-eight years of lies.
Every family photograph.
Every secret.
Every unanswered question.
Then Dominic spoke.
“What did Robert mean by the final piece?”
My mother looked toward the hospital.
“The recording.”
“What recording?”
“The one I made the night Vincent died.”
Vincent's expression changed.
“You still have it?”
“No.”
“Who does?”
“Robert.”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“What does it contain?”
“My confession.”
I stared at her.
“To killing Vincent?”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“To why I ordered it.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“And that reason?”
My mother took a breath.
“Michael Rossi had discovered that Vincent wasn't the only person trying to take Clara.”
“Who else?”
“The council.”
“The Rossi council?”
“Yes.”
“Why did they want her?”
“Because Vincent's bloodline wasn't the only thing she carried.”
My mother looked at me.
“She inherited something from me.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“A ledger.”
I almost laughed.
“Another ledger?”
“No.”
She touched the pendant around my neck.
“The original.”
I looked down.
The blue stone suddenly felt heavier.
“The information inside it can expose every person who participated in the trafficking of identities and assets between the Rossi and Moretti organizations.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Names.”
“Names, accounts, payments, witnesses.”
“And the council has been trying to find it for twenty-eight years.”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
My mother looked at me.
“You already have it.”
I stared.
“The pendant?”
She nodded.
“That's why Michael wanted you alive.”
Dominic understood first.
“He wasn't protecting Clara.”
“He was protecting the ledger.”
My mother nodded.
“He needed her alive because she was the only person who could eventually unlock it.”
I touched the pendant.
“How?”
“Your blood.”
I frowned.
“That's impossible.”
“Not blood itself.”
She pointed toward the stone.
“The original pendant contains a biometric seal.”
Dominic looked at it.
“A fingerprint?”
“DNA.”
My stomach tightened.
“To open the ledger, Clara must touch the stone.”
“And then?”
“The data will transfer to the device.”
Dominic looked toward the hospital.
“Robert has the recording.”
“And the council has the ledger.”
My mother nodded.
“That is why they will come for Clara tonight.”
A car screeched to a stop nearby.
Arthur immediately raised his weapon.
“Down!”
Everyone dropped.
Bullets struck the ambulance.
Dominic grabbed my hand.
“Move!”
We ran toward the hospital entrance.
Vincent covered us.
Maria pulled Ethan behind a concrete barrier.
Luca fired toward the parking lot.
Three black vehicles appeared.
Then five.
Men poured out.
Too many.
Dominic pushed me through the hospital doors.
“Stay behind me.”
“I can help.”
“You've already helped enough.”
“I saved your life twice.”
He looked at me.
“And I'm trying to make sure you don't have to do it a third time.”
We reached the old maternity corridor.
The lights flickered.
My mother stopped.
“This is where they took Isabella.”
I looked at her.
“You remember?”
“Every second.”
She touched the wall.
“There was a nursery here.”
Dominic looked around.
“Where?”
“Behind this wall.”
Arthur searched the corridor.
“There's no entrance.”
My mother smiled sadly.
“There was.”
She pressed a hidden switch.
The wall opened.
A small room appeared.
Inside were old medical files.
Photographs.
A wooden crib.
And one sealed box.
My mother walked toward it.
“That belonged to Vincent.”
She opened it.
Inside was a revolver.
A stack of letters.
And a small cassette.
Dominic picked up the cassette.
“Is this it?”
“Yes.”
“What does it contain?”
“The truth.”
He found an old player on a shelf.
The tape began.
Static.
Then Vincent's voice.
“Evelyn, if you're hearing this, I am already dead.”
My mother closed her eyes.
Vincent continued.
“Michael thinks the child is his.”
Dominic froze.
“The child?”
Vincent’s voice continued.
“Let him believe it.”
Dominic looked at my mother.
She said nothing.
The recording continued.
“Clara must never know who her father is.”
My heart stopped.
Vincent continued:
“Because if Michael learns the truth, he will use her against us.”
Dominic looked confused.
“What truth?”
Then another voice appeared.
Michael.
“You're too late, Vincent.”
A gunshot sounded on the recording.
I covered my mouth.
Then Vincent gasped.
My mother's voice screamed.
“Run!”
The tape crackled.
Then Vincent said:
“Evelyn, listen to me.”
His voice was fading.
“The child isn't mine.”
Everyone froze.
Dominic stared at my mother.
“What?”
The recording continued.
“She belongs to—”
Static swallowed the final words.
The tape stopped.
Nobody moved.
I turned toward my mother.
“Who?”
She looked at me.
Tears streamed down her face.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Who is my father?”
She couldn't answer.
Dominic stepped forward.
“Evelyn.”
She whispered:
“The truth was never about Vincent.”
“Then who?”
She looked at Dominic.
“Michael wasn't lying about one thing.”
Dominic frowned.
“What?”
“He said he wasn't your biological father.”
Dominic stared.
My mother continued.
“But Vincent wasn't Clara's father either.”
My entire body went cold.
“Then who was?”
My mother opened her mouth.
Before she could speak, every light in the hospital went out.
A phone rang.
Arthur answered.
His expression changed instantly.
“Boss.”
Dominic turned.
“What?”
Arthur listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
“The security cameras just came back online.”
“And?”
“They show someone entering the maternity wing.”
“Who?”
Arthur's voice dropped.
“The face matches the man in the photograph.”
My mother froze.
Vincent stepped backward.
Dominic raised his weapon.
“Show me.”
Arthur turned the monitor toward us.
The image was grainy.
But the man walking down the corridor was unmistakable.
Dark hair.
Silver at the temples.
A long black coat.
The same eyes I had seen in the photograph.
Vincent stared at the screen.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You know him.”
Vincent's face had gone white.
“He died twenty-eight years ago.”
Dominic stared at the monitor.
The man stopped directly outside the maternity room.
Then slowly turned toward the camera.
He smiled.
May you like
My mother whispered his name.
And Dominic lowered his weapon because the man on the screen was Michael Rossi.
