Chapter 6 - The Father Who Came Back With Roman

Lily ran toward the door.

Evelyn caught her before she could open it.

“Wait.”

“That’s my dad!”

Sophie appeared behind them.

She stared through the glass.

Unlike Lily, she did not move.

She hid behind Evelyn.

Roman entered first.

His face was exhausted.

The handcuffed man remained outside with the agents.

Lily pulled away.

“Why is Daddy wearing handcuffs?”

Roman crouched.

“Because the police need to talk to him.”

“Did you arrest him?”

Roman looked at Evelyn.

“Yes.”

Lily slapped him.

The sound cracked through the entrance hall.

Everyone froze.

Roman did not react.

Lily burst into tears.

“I hate you!”

She ran upstairs.

Sophie followed.

Evelyn looked at Roman.

“What happened?”

Roman handed her a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

A name.

Thomas Mercer.

The girls’ father.

He had not been a simple fraud suspect.

He had worked for Marcus.

Years earlier, Thomas had helped move money through legitimate companies.

When Marcus was arrested, Thomas cooperated.

He entered protective custody.

The official prison story had been false.

“Why are agents bringing him here?” Evelyn asked.

“Because Marcus sent someone after him.”

“He’s a witness.”

“Yes.”

“And the girls?”

“Targets.”

Her stomach dropped.

Roman continued.

“Someone leaked their foster placement.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

Evelyn looked upstairs.

“They’ve been here for two years.”

“Yes.”

“You knew who their father was?”

“No.”

“When did you find out?”

“Yesterday morning.”

That explained his disappearance.

It did not excuse the lack of communication.

Evelyn closed the folder.

“You left without telling me.”

Roman nodded.

“Yes.”

Her anger rose.

“After everything?”

“I thought I could resolve it quickly.”

“That sentence is the reason our marriage nearly ended before it began.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Roman looked ashamed.

“Habit.”

The answer stopped her.

Not justification.

Truth.

“I failed,” he said. “Again.”

Evelyn exhaled.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

She looked toward the doors.

“What happens now?”

“Thomas wants to speak to you.”

“Why me?”

“Because he asked you to adopt the girls.”

Evelyn stared.

“What?”

Roman opened the door.

Thomas Mercer entered.

He was thin.

Early forties.

Brown hair graying at the temples.

He looked at the staircase.

His eyes filled immediately.

“I heard Lily.”

Evelyn folded her arms.

“Then you understand why I’m not feeling sympathetic.”

“Yes.”

“Your daughters believed you abandoned them.”

“I know.”

“Did you?”

Thomas flinched.

“In a way.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I agreed to disappear because federal agents said Marcus would kill them if I stayed visible.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“Another man protecting people by leaving.”

Roman looked away.

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I deserve that.”

“Why didn’t you contact them?”

“I was forbidden.”

“For two years?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now Marcus’s network is collapsing. But someone leaked my status.”

He looked toward Roman.

“Roman found me before they did.”

Evelyn absorbed that.

Roman had not abandoned them this time.

He had gone directly into danger.

Still without telling her.

Progress, apparently, was not linear.

Thomas continued.

“I can’t give my daughters a normal life.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

“I grew up around men who believe families are leverage.”

His eyes moved toward Roman.

Roman did not argue.

Thomas looked back at Evelyn.

“I signed consent documents.”

“For adoption?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s throat tightened.

“You’re giving up your children?”

“No.”

Thomas’s eyes filled.

“I’m choosing where they will be safest.”

Evelyn almost told him safety was not enough.

Then she remembered her own mother.

Margaret had hidden truths to protect Evelyn.

Roman had hidden truths.

Gabriel had hidden truths.

Every person in this family seemed convinced love worked best in secrecy.

“It cannot happen without Lily and Sophie understanding,” Evelyn said.

Thomas nodded.

“I know.”

“And you don’t disappear again without saying goodbye.”

His face broke.

“I know.”

They brought the girls downstairs.

The reunion hurt to watch.

Lily ran into her father’s arms.

Sophie remained near Evelyn.

Thomas cried openly.

Roman stood at the edge of the room.

Hours passed.

Thomas explained as much as children could understand.

He had made dangerous mistakes.

He had helped bad people.

He had tried to fix those mistakes.

He had stayed away because he believed it kept them safe.

Lily asked the question Evelyn expected.

“Are you staying?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“No.”

Lily sobbed.

Evelyn looked at Roman.

He looked destroyed.

Later that night, after the girls slept, Evelyn found Roman alone in the entrance hall.

His leather travel bag sat beside him.

The same bag from three years ago.

Her body went cold.

“What is that?”

Roman looked at it.

“I packed.”

Evelyn laughed in disbelief.

“You cannot be serious.”

“I’m the reason danger keeps coming here.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Marcus targeted you before you met me.”

“My world reached the girls.”

“So your solution is leaving?”

Roman looked at her.

“My solution is removing the target.”

“You are doing it again.”

“This is different.”

“No.”

Evelyn crossed the hall.

“This is exactly the same.”

Roman stood.

“I won’t risk them.”

“And what happens after you leave?”

“They’re safer.”

“And emotionally?”

He looked away.

“What happens when Sophie wakes up and you’re gone?”

Silence.

“What happens when Lily decides every man she loves eventually disappears?”

Roman’s jaw clenched.

“What happens to me?”

He looked at her.

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“You spent three years learning how to stay, and the moment staying became difficult, you packed the same bag.”

Roman said nothing.

She pointed toward it.

“That bag is not protection.”

He stared.

“It’s fear.”

The words landed.

Roman looked down.

Evelyn continued.

“I survived when you left me.”

“I know.”

“I built a life.”

“I know.”

“I do not need you.”

His face tightened.

Then Evelyn stepped closer.

“But I love you.”

Roman looked up.

She had never said it.

Not once.

Three years.

She had waited until she was certain it did not mean dependence.

“I love you,” she repeated. “And that means I expect you to stay when things are ugly.”

Roman’s eyes shone.

Evelyn touched the bag.

“If you walk out now, I will survive.”

He closed his eyes.

“That’s what scares me.”

She understood.

He did not fear losing her to death anymore.

He feared discovering she truly did not need him.

Evelyn took his hand.

“Being needed is not the same as being loved.”

Roman looked at her.

For the first time in his life, perhaps, he seemed to believe it.

He unpacked the bag.

The next morning, Thomas entered federal protection.

The girls began therapy.

Roman testified against several members of Marcus’s remaining network.

The Calder organization changed.

Legitimate companies replaced the businesses Roman had inherited.

Men who refused the change left.

Some threatened him.

Some threatened Evelyn.

None succeeded.

Months passed.

Then the adoption hearing was scheduled.

Evelyn wore navy.

Roman wore gray because Sophie said black made him look “like a funeral.”

Lily wore yellow.

Sophie wore pink.

Gabriel complained about courthouse chairs.

Clara carried snacks for everyone.

Thomas appeared by secure video.

He watched as the judge asked Lily and Sophie whether they wanted Evelyn and Roman to become their legal parents.

Lily said yes.

Sophie said, “Only if Roman learns better braids.”

The courtroom laughed.

Roman promised.

The judge lifted his pen.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

A federal agent entered quickly.

He walked straight toward Roman.

Whispered something.

Roman’s face changed.

Evelyn stood.

“What?”

The agent looked at the judge.

May you like

Then at Evelyn.

“Marcus Vale escaped custody twenty minutes ago.”
