Chapter 7 - The Crash That Missed Its Target

Camille read her name twice.

Then a third time.

“No.”

Lucian immediately called Enzo.

“Find Adrian.”

Camille took the phone.

“Wait.”

Lucian looked at her.

“Someone tried to kill you.”

“Eleven months ago?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t even know you.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It matters a lot.”

Matteo stepped inside.

“Why would Daniel be driving a car meant for Camille?”

That was the question.

Isabella supplied the answer.

Daniel had planned to meet Camille the morning he died.

Not accidentally.

Not merely to drop a wallet.

He intended to give her evidence.

“He knew Elaine was sick,” Isabella explained. “He knew she might never tell Camille.”

“My mother was still alive then.”

“Yes.”

“She died five years ago.”

Isabella frowned.

“No.”

Camille stared at her.

“What?”

“Elaine contacted Daniel eighteen months ago.”

The room went silent.

Camille shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

“I spoke to her.”

“My mother died five years ago.”

Isabella’s face changed.

“Then someone impersonated Elaine too.”

The pattern emerged.

Dead identities.

Daniel.

Elaine.

Someone had been manipulating both sides.

Camille sat down.

“Adrian.”

Lucian paced once, then stopped himself.

“Why?”

“To make Daniel investigate.”

“To make me come here.”

Matteo frowned.

“But why would Adrian want Camille inside our house?”

Camille looked at Lucian.

“He didn’t.”

Lucian understood.

“Someone else sent the recent emails.”

“Yes.”

Two different players.

Adrian had manipulated Daniel before his death.

But someone else had resurrected Daniel’s identity to bring Camille to Lucian now.

“Who?”

Isabella looked toward Matteo.

Matteo blinked.

“Why are you looking at me?”

“Because Daniel trusted one other person.”

Matteo’s face changed.

“No.”

Lucian stared.

“What did you do?”

Matteo sat down.

For once, there was no joke.

“I found Daniel’s scheduled emails.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Lucian’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“You sent Camille the messages?”

“Some of them.”

Camille stared at him.

“You impersonated Daniel?”

“I used drafts he had already written.”

“You told me you knew nothing about the contract.”

“I didn’t change the contract.”

“Then who did?”

“I don’t know.”

Lucian stepped forward.

Matteo stood too.

“You brought her into danger.”

“I brought her here because Daniel wanted her here.”

“He was dead!”

“And you weren’t doing anything!”

The words exploded from Matteo.

Lucian stopped.

Matteo’s eyes filled.

“For eleven months you locked Daniel’s room and pretended his death was an accident because admitting otherwise meant admitting you couldn’t control it.”

Lucian said nothing.

“I found the drafts. I found Camille’s name. I found instructions saying she could help.”

“So you contacted her.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Would you have let her through the gate?”

Lucian had no answer.

Matteo laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.”

Camille stood.

“The messages tonight?”

“Not mine.”

“The warning not to leave?”

“No.”

“The spoon?”

“No.”

“Who changed the contract?”

“I swear I don’t know.”

Lucian turned away.

Camille saw the old instinct.

Anger.

Command.

Punishment.

Then he did something different.

He asked.

“Why, Matteo?”

His brother swallowed.

“Because Daniel believed you could still become the man he raised.”

Lucian’s face crumpled for half a second.

“And I wanted my brother back.”

Silence.

Lucian sat.

No shouting.

No threats.

No orders.

Just a man absorbing the cost of everything he had mistaken for protection.

Camille moved beside him.

“Lesson two,” she said softly.

He looked up.

“What?”

“Listen before deciding.”

Matteo laughed through tears.

“You’re still charging by the hour, right?”

“Absolutely.”

Lucian almost smiled.

Then Enzo called.

They had found Adrian.

He had entered an abandoned Moretti warehouse near the river.

Police were notified.

Lucian wanted to go.

Camille objected.

Then realized she was doing to him exactly what he had done to everyone else.

Deciding for him.

“You want to go?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel died because of this.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Lucian looked at her.

“Because I need to know whether I spent eleven months mourning an accident that wasn’t one.”

Camille nodded.

“Then I’m coming.”

“No.”

She raised an eyebrow.

Lucian closed his eyes.

“Please don’t.”

“Better.”

“Camille.”

“I’m still coming.”

Police surrounded the warehouse before they arrived.

Adrian was inside.

So was another man.

The false caterer.

His name was Peter Vale.

Adrian’s son.

That explained Daniel’s bracelet.

Peter had stolen it from Daniel’s belongings years earlier.

He had been the one inside the mansion.

The one who took the copy of the ledger.

The one who planted the spoon.

But the contract?

Peter denied altering it.

The warnings?

He denied those too.

Adrian finally spoke after investigators discovered financial records linking him to Daniel’s mechanic.

The truth was uglier than anyone expected.

Adrian had learned Daniel intended to expose him.

He ordered the brakes on Daniel’s car sabotaged.

But Daniel had borrowed a vehicle that morning.

The car originally belonged to Elaine Brooks’s consulting company.

Adrian’s people believed Elaine was alive and using Camille’s name as a front.

They had targeted the vehicle.

Daniel died instead.

Camille felt sick.

“My mother’s name was being used by someone else.”

“Yes,” Isabella said.

“Who?”

Adrian refused to answer.

Police arrested him.

Peter too.

Lucian did not threaten either man.

He did not touch them.

He stood beside Camille while officers placed them in separate cars.

Adrian looked at him through the window.

“You think this woman changed you?”

Lucian said nothing.

Adrian smiled.

“You’re still Vittorio’s son.”

Lucian walked away.

Camille followed.

After several steps, he stopped.

“That used to be the worst thing anyone could say to me.”

“And now?”

“I’m Daniel’s too.”

Camille smiled.

“Yes.”

They returned to the mansion shortly before dawn.

For the first time since Camille arrived, the house felt quiet rather than watchful.

Matteo made breakfast.

It was terrible.

Lucian ate it anyway.

Camille corrected his grip on the fork.

Matteo took a photograph.

Lucian threatened to delete it.

Then caught himself.

“Please delete it.”

“No.”

“Worth trying.”

They laughed.

It almost felt finished.

That frightened Camille.

Because unresolved questions remained.

Who had altered the contract?

Who had sent the warning messages?

Who had used Elaine’s identity eighteen months earlier?

At nine, Nina called.

Police had returned Camille’s office backup files.

She had found something.

An archived voicemail.

Five years old.

Recorded three days before Elaine Brooks died.

Camille played it on speaker.

Her mother’s voice filled the dining room.

“Camille, if Daniel ever comes looking for you, listen to him.”

Camille covered her mouth.

Then Elaine said something stranger.

“There is one person inside the Moretti family who knows everything. I promised never to tell you who unless Vittorio’s network became active again.”

A pause.

“If you are hearing this, find the green file.”

Camille had already found it.

“Look beneath the lining.”

She ran upstairs.

Lucian and Matteo followed.

Camille opened the green file and tore back the fabric lining.

A small brass key fell out.

Attached was a tag.

M-17.

Lucian recognized it.

“Union Station.”

“What?”

“Old private storage lockers.”

They drove there with police.

Locker M-17 had not been opened in years.

The key turned.

Inside sat a single leather document case.

Camille lifted it out.

There was a letter addressed to her.

She opened it.

My dearest Camille,

If you found this, then the danger I hoped was buried has returned.

You need to know that Daniel was not the only person who protected you.

There was another.

Someone Vittorio trusted completely.

Someone who watched his sons grow up.

Someone still living in Lucian’s house.

Camille stopped reading.

Lucian stared at her.

“Who?”

She turned the page.

Before she could read the name, Lucian’s phone rang.

Mrs. Alvarez was calling from the mansion.

Lucian answered.

Her voice shook.

“Mr. Moretti, someone is in Daniel’s archive.”

“Who?”

Mrs. Alvarez whispered a name.

Lucian’s face changed.

The call ended.

Camille looked at him.

“Who was it?”

He stared at the letter in her hands.

Then at Matteo.

May you like

“Mrs. Alvarez.”

And for the first time, Camille realized the quiet housekeeper had been there for everything.
