Chapter 10 - What Really Killed Elena

Hazel forgot how to move.

Her mother looked older.

Thinner.

But unmistakably alive.

“Mom?”

Sarah cried.

Hazel crossed the room.

Then stopped.

Years of grief stood between them.

“You let me bury you.”

Sarah’s face broke.

“I know.”

“You let Emily bury you.”

“I know.”

Hazel slapped her.

Then hugged her.

Both women collapsed into tears.

Damian quietly turned away.

Later, Sarah explained.

The birth certificate had been manufactured by Michael.

He wanted Damian to believe Hazel was his sister.

“Why?”

“To separate you.”

Hazel’s face warmed.

Sarah noticed.

“Oh.”

“Mom.”

“I was dead, not blind.”

Damian almost choked on his coffee.

Sarah explained the real connection.

She had been Vittorio Romano’s accountant.

Damian’s mother, Sofia, had tried to leave Vittorio when Damian was young.

Sarah helped her.

The sixty thousand dollars financed the escape.

It failed.

Vittorio recovered Damian.

Sofia died years later overseas.

The fabricated certificate exploited pieces of that history.

Hazel exhaled.

Damian’s eyes met hers.

Neither said what both were thinking.

They weren't related.

Sarah then told Damian the truth about Elena.

Elena had discovered Michael laundering money through Sullivan businesses.

She confronted Vittorio.

Vittorio ordered the bombing.

But Michael changed the timing.

He wanted Elena dead and Damian alive.

“Why?”

“To turn you against your father.”

“And eventually take the organization,” Damian said.

Sarah nodded.

Elena survived the initial explosion.

Marianne reached her.

Elena’s final words were:

Michael knows about Hazel.

Damian looked at Sarah.

“Hazel was sixteen.”

“Yes.”

“Why would Michael care?”

“Because I had already designated Hazel as the archive’s legal owner.”

Not merely a key.

Owner.

The archive contained legitimate assets too.

Properties.

Trusts.

Accounts created with money seized from criminal operations.

Worth nearly forty million dollars.

All legally transferred to Hazel through a dormant trust.

Hazel stared.

“I clean houses.”

Sarah almost smiled.

“You own three office buildings.”

“Apparently I clean houses recreationally.”

Damian laughed.

A real laugh.

Everyone looked at him.

He stopped.

Hazel smiled.

“Don't stop.”

His eyes softened.

For a moment, the war disappeared.

Then Marco entered.

“Michael contacted us.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“He wants a meeting.”

“Where?”

“Romano warehouse.”

“What does he want?”

“Sarah and Hazel.”

“No.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“Yes.”

Hazel looked at her.

Sarah had hidden for years.

She was finished hiding.

They planned carefully.

Michael expected fear.

Instead, Damian brought evidence.

The warehouse was surrounded.

Michael stood alone inside.

Older than Damian remembered.

But smiling.

“Nephew.”

“Uncle.”

Michael looked at Hazel.

“So much trouble from such a quiet little maid.”

Hazel held his gaze.

“People keep mistaking quiet for helpless.”

Michael’s smile vanished.

Damian almost smiled.

Then Michael revealed his advantage.

A detonator.

Explosives had been planted beneath the archive.

“If I release this button, Sarah’s evidence disappears.”

Damian stared at him.

“You think that's leverage?”

“It is.”

“No.”

Damian lifted his phone.

“The archive was copied yesterday.”

Michael’s expression changed.

For the first time, fear appeared.

Police sirens approached.

Not compromised local officers.

Federal agents.

Sarah had transmitted everything.

Michael stepped backward.

“You'd destroy your own family?”

Damian answered quietly.

“You did that years ago.”

Michael’s thumb moved.

A gunshot cracked.

The detonator fell.

Marco had fired.

Agents flooded the warehouse.

Michael was arrested.

It should have ended there.

But as they left, Sarah looked at Hazel.

“There's one thing I haven't told you.”

Hazel stopped.

“What?”

Sarah looked toward Damian.

“It concerns Elena.”

Damian turned.

Sarah’s face went pale.

“She had a child.”

Damian stopped breathing.

May you like

And Sarah whispered the next words so quietly Hazel almost didn't hear them.

“The child is alive.”
