Chapter 6 - The Man Wearing His Father’s Ring

Massimo forgot about the guns.

For one impossible second, he forgot about Vivian, Lenora, Blake, Damian, Sophie, the trust, and the six armed men surrounding him.

He saw only the ring.

Heavy gold.

Black onyx.

A small letter M carved into its center.

His father had worn it every day for thirty-two years.

Massimo had watched Lucia remove it from Salvatore’s hand before the funeral.

She had placed it inside a velvet box herself.

That box had remained locked in Lucia’s bedroom safe.

Until now.

The man stepped into the fluorescent light.

He was tall and broad-shouldered despite his age, with silver hair and a face Massimo had never seen before.

The ring gleamed on his right hand.

Massimo’s voice dropped.

“Where did you get that?”

The stranger looked down at it.

“This?”

He rotated his hand slowly.

“Your mother kept it longer than I expected.”

Massimo moved toward him.

Two guards raised their weapons.

Sophie shouted, “Massimo!”

He stopped.

Not from fear.

From calculation.

Six guards.

Blake.

Damian.

Vivian.

Lenora.

And Sophie trapped between them.

Anger would get her killed.

So Massimo smiled.

It unsettled Vivian immediately.

“You think this is funny?” she asked.

“No.”

His eyes stayed on the stranger.

“I think somebody went to a lot of trouble to make me emotional.”

The stranger’s mouth twitched.

“Smart.”

“Who are you?”

Lenora answered.

“Not yet.”

Massimo turned toward her.

“You brought me here.”

“And you came exactly as expected.”

“For Sophie.”

Vivian’s face tightened.

Sophie noticed.

So did Massimo.

Interesting.

Jealousy.

Even now.

Vivian laughed.

“You barely know her.”

Massimo looked at Sophie.

Her wrists were bound.

Her cheek was red.

But she was standing.

Still fighting.

“She protected my mother when you abused her.”

Vivian’s smile vanished.

“She’s staff.”

“No.”

Massimo looked back at Vivian.

“She’s the woman you were afraid enough to frame.”

Damian stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Massimo looked at his cousin.

Damian had spent Christmases at the Moretti estate.

He had stood beside Massimo at his father’s funeral.

He had carried Lucia’s bags after her surgery.

Now he held a gun.

“How much?” Massimo asked.

Damian frowned.

“What?”

“How much was I worth?”

“This isn’t about money.”

“Everything you do is about money.”

“You always thought you were better than me.”

“No.”

Massimo’s answer came calmly.

“I rarely thought about you at all.”

Damian’s face flushed.

Massimo saw the hit land exactly where he intended.

Lenora stepped between them.

“Stop.”

Damian obeyed.

That told Massimo something.

Damian feared her.

Good.

Fear created mistakes.

Lenora looked at the empty document case.

“Where is the original trust?”

“Safe.”

“Which safe?”

“One you’ll never open.”

The stranger wearing Salvatore’s ring finally spoke.

“We don’t need to open it.”

Massimo turned.

The man approached.

“You brought us something better.”

“What?”

“Yourself.”

Massimo remembered Lenora’s words.

I needed you.

Not the trust.

Him.

“Explain.”

Lenora nodded toward Blake.

The detective removed a document from his coat.

Massimo recognized the formatting immediately.

A medical incapacity petition.

His name sat at the top.

Massimo laughed.

“You kidnapped a witness and surrounded me with armed men so you could ask me to sign paperwork?”

“No.”

Lenora smiled.

“We need your fingerprints.”

The room became silent.

Massimo looked at the document again.

Then he understood.

A signature could be challenged.

Fingerprints were harder.

Especially if paired with medical evidence claiming impairment.

“You’re going to drug me.”

Lenora smiled.

“Temporarily.”

“And afterward?”

Nobody answered.

Massimo looked at the stranger’s ring.

“Cardiac arrest?”

The man smiled.

Now Massimo knew.

The draft death certificate had never been theoretical.

Saturday had been the original date.

Tonight was the backup plan.

Sophie suddenly moved.

She drove her shoulder into Vivian.

Vivian screamed.

Sophie twisted free.

Damian grabbed her.

Massimo struck the nearest guard before anyone could react.

One punch.

The man dropped.

Marco had taught his team to watch hands.

This guard watched Massimo’s eyes.

Wrong choice.

Massimo seized the weapon.

Blake raised his gun.

“Stop!”

Massimo pointed the stolen pistol directly at him.

Everything froze.

Sophie struggled against Damian.

Vivian backed toward Lenora.

Five guards aimed at Massimo.

He aimed at Blake.

“You first,” Massimo said.

Blake swallowed.

Lenora remained calm.

“You cannot shoot your way out.”

“I don’t need to.”

Massimo checked the wall clock.

12:07.

Lenora noticed.

“What are you waiting for?”

Massimo smiled.

“Evidence.”

Her expression shifted.

A tiny red light blinked beneath his shirt collar.

Micro-camera.

Vivian went white.

Massimo looked directly at her.

“Smile.”

She lunged toward him.

Then the clinic went dark.

Emergency lights activated.

Red.

Someone shouted.

A gun fired into the ceiling.

Sophie dropped.

Massimo moved toward her.

The stairwell doors burst open.

“Federal agents! Weapons down!”

Chaos exploded.

Two Moretti guards immediately surrendered.

A third ran.

Marco tackled him into the wall.

Blake tried to escape through Room 214.

An agent caught him.

Damian released Sophie and reached for his gun.

Massimo aimed.

“Don’t.”

Damian froze.

Vivian screamed at Lenora.

“You said he was alone!”

Lenora backed toward the service corridor.

“I said he would arrive alone.”

She pressed a button.

A fire door slammed between them.

“Lenora!” Vivian shouted.

The older woman disappeared.

Massimo ran to Sophie.

“Are you hurt?”

She looked up.

“I’m okay.”

He cut the ties around her wrists.

Her hands were shaking.

“You came.”

Massimo looked at her.

“You sound surprised.”

“I thought you’d choose the trust.”

“There was never a choice.”

Something passed across Sophie’s face.

Then she looked away.

Marco approached.

“Lenora’s moving through the south corridor.”

“Take her alive.”

Marco nodded.

Massimo turned toward the stranger.

Gone.

He scanned the clinic.

Nothing.

“The man with the ring.”

Marco looked around.

“Who?”

“He was standing there.”

Marco spoke into his radio.

“Unknown male, sixties, silver hair, dark coat. Lock the perimeter.”

An agent shouted from the hallway.

“Vehicle leaving south exit!”

Massimo ran to the window.

A black sedan smashed through the security barrier.

Lenora was inside.

Beside her sat the silver-haired man.

They disappeared into the night.

Massimo looked at Marco.

“Find them.”

“We will.”

Behind them, Vivian was screaming.

“This is a misunderstanding!”

Two federal agents restrained her.

“I’m Massimo Moretti’s fiancée!”

Massimo turned.

“No.”

Vivian stared at him.

“No?”

“The engagement ended Tuesday at 2:14 p.m.”

Her face collapsed.

“You were watching.”

“Every second.”

Damian closed his eyes.

Blake said nothing.

Vivian looked toward Sophie.

Hatred twisted her expression.

“This is because of her?”

Massimo walked closer.

“This is because you put your hands on my mother.”

Vivian flinched.

“And because you stole her medication.”

Another step.

“Because you forged documents.”

Another.

“Because you bribed a detective.”

Blake looked away.

“And because you tried to destroy an innocent woman to protect yourself.”

Vivian’s eyes filled with tears.

“You loved me.”

Massimo stopped.

“I loved the woman you pretended to be.”

For the first time, Vivian had no answer.

Federal agents led her away.

Damian followed.

Blake was handcuffed.

Sophie stood silently beside Massimo.

Then she whispered, “My mother.”

He looked at her.

“The recording.”

“The file is gone.”

“We’ll find it.”

“What if Lenora has it?”

“She probably does.”

Sophie’s face tightened.

“Then she knows what my mother knew.”

Massimo nodded.

“And that makes her dangerous.”

“To me?”

“To everyone.”

Marco returned.

“Perimeter lost the sedan.”

Massimo looked toward the broken gate.

“Wedding still happens.”

Marco stared at him.

“You can’t be serious.”

“Vivian has been arrested.”

“Exactly.”

“Lenora escaped.”

Understanding dawned.

Massimo continued.

“She spent years planning for Saturday.”

“You think she’ll still come?”

“No.”

He looked toward the hallway.

“But somebody will.”

Sophie frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the original trust will be there.”

Marco shook his head.

“You’re using it as bait.”

“Yes.”

“And yourself.”

“Yes.”

Sophie stepped closer.

“No.”

Massimo looked at her.

“You don't get to tell me no.”

“I just did.”

Despite everything, Marco almost smiled.

Sophie continued.

“My mother died because of these people. Isabella lost eight years. Lucia was attacked. Now you know somebody inside your own security team betrayed you.”

“That is exactly why I need them to believe the plan is continuing.”

“And if they kill you?”

“They won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

Massimo studied her.

She was angry because she was afraid for him.

He wasn't accustomed to people being afraid for him without also being afraid of him.

“I know something they don’t,” he said.

“What?”

“Saturday will not be a wedding.”

“What will it be?”

“A courtroom without a judge.”

Forty-eight hours later, St. Patrick’s Cathedral was prepared for the ceremony.

The arrests had been kept quiet.

Officially, Vivian was recovering from “pre-wedding exhaustion.”

Damian was “traveling.”

Blake had taken “personal leave.”

The lies were absurd.

They only needed to survive until Saturday.

Three hundred guests arrived.

Politicians.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Relatives.

Reporters invited under the excuse of society coverage.

Federal agents dressed as ushers.

Investigators hidden among catering staff.

Lucia sat in the front pew.

Sophie sat beside her.

For the first time since Massimo had met her, Sophie was not wearing a housekeeping uniform.

Lucia had insisted.

A simple dark blue dress.

No jewelry except a small silver necklace that had belonged to Margaret.

Massimo noticed her the moment he entered.

Sophie noticed him too.

Their eyes met.

Neither smiled.

They didn't need to.

Isabella remained hidden in a secure room beneath the cathedral.

Gabriel sat with federal investigators nearby.

The original trust rested inside a locked case.

Everything was ready.

Except the bride.

Guests whispered.

Eleven minutes passed.

Then the cathedral doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Vivian entered.

Gasps spread through the pews.

She was wearing her wedding dress.

Two federal agents walked behind her.

Her release had been staged under supervision.

Vivian knew she was finished.

She had agreed to cooperate.

Or claimed she had.

She reached the altar.

Massimo looked at her.

“You wanted three hundred witnesses.”

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

“So did you.”

The cathedral lights dimmed.

A screen descended behind the altar.

The first hidden-camera recording played.

Vivian striking Lucia.

The slap echoed through the cathedral.

People gasped.

Vivian closed her eyes.

Then came the medication.

The forged documents.

Damian planting evidence.

Blake accepting money.

Every secret became public.

Sophie held Lucia’s hand.

Massimo faced the guests.

“This wedding was supposed to create a family.”

His voice carried through the cathedral.

“Instead, it exposed the people who tried to destroy one.”

The screen changed.

Margaret Bennett’s photograph appeared.

Sophie froze.

Massimo continued.

“This woman saved my sister’s life.”

Whispers spread.

“And because she did, someone made sure her own daughter grew up believing she died naturally.”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

Massimo looked at her.

“Margaret Bennett was not a maid.”

He looked at the crowd.

“She was a witness.”

The rear cathedral doors suddenly slammed shut.

Marco touched his earpiece.

His face changed.

“Massimo.”

“What?”

“We have an unauthorized transmission.”

The screen flickered.

Margaret’s photograph disappeared.

A live video replaced it.

Lenora Bell sat in an unknown room.

Beside her was the silver-haired man wearing Salvatore Moretti’s ring.

The entire cathedral went silent.

Lenora smiled into the camera.

“Beautiful ceremony.”

Massimo stepped toward the screen.

“Where are you?”

Lenora ignored him.

The man beside her lifted his hand.

The ring caught the light.

Lucia stood so quickly Sophie had to catch her.

“No.”

Massimo turned toward his mother.

Her face had gone completely white.

The man on the screen leaned toward the camera.

Then he spoke.

“Hello, son.”

Three hundred people froze.

Massimo stared at him.

Lucia began shaking her head.

“No. No, that’s impossible.”

The man smiled.

Then he reached toward the camera and removed a thin piece of prosthetic material from his cheek.

Sophie gasped.

Massimo stopped breathing.

The screen flickered once.

May you like

The man pulled away the rest of the disguise.

And underneath it was the face Massimo had watched disappear into a coffin seventeen years ago.
