Chapter 14 - The Last Name on the Ledger

Rosa Duca.
I stared.
“No.”
Marco looked equally stunned.
The entry read:
R. DUCA — CROWN BENEFICIARY.
Rosa walked into the corridor.
She saw the screen.
Then sighed.
“I wondered when you’d find that.”
My heart sank.
Lorenzo was being taken to surgery.
Margaret was in custody.
And now this.
“You were part of Crown?”
“Yes.”
The word hit like a slap.
Then Rosa continued.
“For six months.”
She had joined deliberately after Vittorio discovered the organization.
Someone needed access to its accounts.
Rosa became that person.
She transferred evidence to Thomas.
Her name remained because Margaret never discovered the betrayal.
“Prove it.”
Rosa nodded.
“Good.”
She led investigators to a private safe.
Inside were decades of documents.
Originals.
Signatures.
Bank records.
Enough to dismantle Crown permanently.
By sunrise, arrests had begun.
Executives.
Attorneys.
Officials.
Businessmen.
The network collapsed not because one powerful man destroyed it.
But because people who had been frightened for years finally had evidence.
Margaret survived.
She was charged.
Ethan cooperated.
His testimony helped investigators locate additional accounts and victims.
I visited him once.
“I loved you,” he said.
“I know.”
“I just didn’t know how.”
“That doesn’t make what you did okay.”
“I know.”
That was the closest thing to closure we would get.
I left without promising forgiveness.
At the hospital, Lorenzo woke after surgery.
I was beside him.
His first words were:
“Did Rosa bring my twenty dollars?”
I burst into tears.
He looked alarmed.
“Was that the wrong thing?”
I kissed him.
Carefully.
“Terrible timing.”
“So normal timing for us.”
Doctors expected a full recovery.
My birthday arrived while Lorenzo was still hospitalized.
At 10:14 a.m., Crown legally transferred to me.
At 10:15, I signed the dissolution documents.
At 10:16, every remaining internal record went to investigators.
Seventeen years of fear ended in two signatures and bad hospital coffee.
My father had left me an empire.
I destroyed it.
Best birthday present I ever gave myself.
The legitimate assets were different.
After restitution funds for Crown’s victims were established, lawyers determined some businesses could continue independently.
I used part of my inheritance to expand my bakery.
Not into a national empire.
I didn’t want one.
Three locations.
Good employees.
Excellent chocolate cake.
Enough.
Lorenzo returned home six weeks later.
He was thinner.
Slower.
More irritated by physical therapy than bullets.
I moved into the mansion permanently.
My room remained mine.
My key remained mine.
That mattered.
One evening, I found the drawer containing the six engagement rings open.
The boxes were gone.
“What happened?”
Lorenzo appeared behind me.
“I returned them.”
“All six?”
“Where possible.”
“And yours?”
He looked at my hand.
I wore the ring he had given me.
“That one was never mine.”
I smiled.
Then I noticed an envelope inside the empty drawer.
My name.
I opened it.
Inside was a wedding invitation.
No date.
No location.
Just two blank lines.
Lorenzo Duca.
Amelia Carter.
“You forgot some details.”
“I thought you should choose them.”
Of course he did.
I looked at him.
“How about the bakery?”
“For our wedding?”
“Why not?”
“My grandmother will object.”
“Excellent.”
His arms circled me.
“Anything else?”
“Yes.”
“No Oriental rugs.”
“Agreed.”
“No arranged-marriage contracts.”
“Agreed.”
“And nobody uses the phrase ‘seventh bride.’”
His expression softened.
“You were never number seven.”
“No?”
“No.”
I waited.
He touched my cheek.
“You were the first woman who stayed because she was free to leave.”
I kissed him.
Then the study door burst open.
Rosa marched inside holding her phone.
“You two have a problem.”
Lorenzo groaned.
“What now?”
She turned the screen toward us.
A photograph had just arrived from an unknown number.
It showed our future wedding location.
Taken that morning.
On the back was one final message.
Lorenzo read it once.
Then handed it to me.
My breath caught.
May you like
Because the message contained only five words:
THOMAS CARTER LEFT ONE MORE SECRET...
