Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside the House

Luca moved in front of Sophia.
Gabriel cocked the gun.
"Don't."
Luca stopped.
Margaret didn't.
She stared at Gabriel with something worse than fear.
Grief.
"You."
Gabriel smiled.
"You always were slow to accept betrayal."
"You helped me."
"I helped myself."
Sophia looked at the man who had carried her mother's box across eleven years.
"Why bring me the key?"
"Because Vittorio couldn't find the ledger."
"You needed me."
"Exactly."
Luca's voice was deadly calm.
"You won't leave this room."
Gabriel shrugged.
"I don't need to."
The windows exploded.
Everyone dropped.
Smoke filled the study.
Sophia heard shouting.
Gunfire.
Luca's arm wrapped around her and dragged her behind the desk.
"Stay down."
Margaret crawled beside them.
Elena disappeared through a side door.
Sophia grabbed Luca.
"Elena!"
"Marco has her."
Gabriel vanished into the smoke.
By the time security regained control, he was gone.
So was the copper bowl.
But Marco had already copied everything.
For the first time, they had the advantage.
Luca gave the files to an anti-mafia prosecutor in Milan whom his father had trusted.
Sophia expected him to keep them.
Use them.
Trade them.
Instead, he surrendered everything.
"Why?" she asked.
They stood alone on the terrace before dawn.
"Because my father died trying to expose Vittorio."
"And your organization?"
Luca looked across the lake.
"I've spent twelve years making legitimate what I inherited."
Sophia studied him.
"Are you telling me you're not actually a Mafia boss?"
He looked at her.
"I didn't say that."
She laughed.
He smiled.
Then silence settled between them.
Sophia leaned against the stone railing.
"We were supposed to get married two days ago."
"I remember."
"You haven't mentioned it."
"You had other concerns."
"That's unusually reasonable."
"I have occasional moments."
She looked at him.
"Luca."
His expression changed.
"I don't want to marry you because my father negotiated it."
"Good."
"I don't want to marry you because my mother thinks you'll protect me."
"Good."
"And I definitely don't want to marry you because Vittorio is hunting me."
"Very good."
Sophia frowned.
"You're making this difficult."
"How?"
"You're supposed to argue."
"I've spent my life watching people feel obligated to stay near me."
The humor disappeared from his face.
"I won't do that to you."
Sophia's chest tightened.
"Those women really hurt you."
He looked away.
"Forget them."
"No."
"Sophia."
"Five women."
"Elena talks too much."
"Why did you keep trying?"
He was silent for a long time.
"Because I wanted a family."
Simple.
No performance.
Sophia's heart cracked a little.
"That's all?"
"Isn't that enough?"
She thought about her own broken family.
Her lying father.
Her missing mother.
Her bakery.
The lonely apartment above it.
"Yes."
She stepped closer.
Luca became very still.
Sophia reached for his hand.
His fingers closed around hers.
"Maybe," she said, "if we survive all this, you could ask me properly."
"Properly?"
"Without my father selling me."
"I didn't buy you."
"I know."
"Good."
"And preferably without armed guards."
"That may be difficult."
She smiled.
He did too.
Then Sophia stood on her toes and kissed him.
Luca didn't respond for one stunned second.
Then one enormous hand settled carefully against her waist.
The kiss remained gentle.
Almost painfully so.
When Sophia pulled back, Luca looked genuinely shaken.
"You're staring."
"You kissed me."
"I noticed."
"Why?"
She laughed.
"That may be the least romantic question anyone has ever asked after a kiss."
"I'm serious."
"So am I."
She touched his cheek.
"Because I wanted to."
Something changed in his eyes.
The expectation of rejection didn't disappear.
But for the first time, it loosened.
Then Marco stepped onto the terrace.
"I'm sorry."
Luca's hand remained around Sophia's waist.
"What?"
"We found Arthur."
Sophia stiffened.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"Milan."
Margaret joined them twenty minutes later.
They found Arthur in a private clinic under an assumed name.
He looked twenty years older.
When Sophia entered his room, he cried.
She didn't.
"I'm sorry."
Sophia pulled up a chair.
"Tell me everything."
Arthur did.
He had betrayed Margaret.
He had accepted Vittorio's money.
He had identified another woman's body as Margaret's after Vittorio staged the crash.
He had spent eleven years convincing himself he'd protected Sophia by cooperating.
"Why send me to Luca?"
Arthur looked at her.
"Because Vittorio came back."
"And?"
"I knew Luca would die before letting him touch you."
Sophia swallowed.
"So you used him."
"Yes."
"And me."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Sophia stood.
"I'm not forgiving you today."
"I understand."
"Maybe not tomorrow."
He nodded.
"But you're going to testify."
Arthur looked terrified.
"Vittorio will kill me."
Sophia leaned closer.
"Then for once in your life, be afraid and do the right thing anyway."
Arthur stared at his daughter.
Then nodded.
"I'll testify."
The prosecution moved quickly.
Arrests began.
Judges.
Customs officials.
Police officers.
Businessmen.
Vittorio's network collapsed piece by piece.
But Vittorio disappeared.
So did Gabriel.
For three weeks, nothing happened.
Sophia remained at the estate.
Not because anyone forced her.
Because she wanted to.
She baked.
Luca worked.
Margaret slowly learned how to become a mother again.
Elena mercilessly teased her brother.
And something dangerously close to happiness began growing in the spaces between all of them.
One evening Sophia carried a tray of pastries into Luca's study.
He looked up.
"Bribery?"
"Research."
"For?"
"Our wedding cake."
Luca stopped.
Sophia smiled.
"You were going to ask properly, remember?"
He stood.
Slowly.
"Sophia Bennett."
"No."
He froze.
She laughed.
"Not in your office."
He stared.
"Where?"
"Surprise me."
Two nights later, Luca drove her to a small terrace overlooking Lake Como.
No guards visible.
No priest.
No contract.
Just lights.
Flowers.
And Luca.
He took her hands.
"I had a speech."
"What happened?"
"I forgot it."
"Good start."
He smiled.
Then became serious.
"I don't need you to save me from loneliness."
Sophia's eyes burned.
"I don't need you to repay anyone's debt."
He lowered himself to one knee.
Even kneeling, he was nearly eye level with her.
Sophia laughed through tears.
"I only need the answer to one question."
He opened a small box.
"Sophia Bennett, will you marry me because you choose me?"
She looked at the man everyone had taught her to fear.
The man who had built escape clauses into their contract.
The man who had protected her without demanding gratitude.
The man who still looked, somewhere deep inside, as if he expected her to run.
"Yes."
Luca stopped breathing.
Sophia smiled.
"Yes, Luca."
He stood and kissed her.
Her phone vibrated.
Neither wanted to look.
It vibrated again.
Sophia finally pulled it out.
Unknown number.
A photograph loaded.
Luca's proposal.
Taken from less than fifty feet away.
Sophia's smile vanished.
A second image arrived.
Her mother asleep in her bedroom at the estate.
A third.
Elena entering her car that morning.
Then a message.
YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME.
NOW I TAKE THE BRIDE.
Luca grabbed Sophia.
May you like
A red laser appeared on his chest.
And somewhere in the darkness behind them, a rifle fired.
