Chapter 7 - The Secret Their Parents Buried

Adrien had never seen the photograph.

Neither had Camille.

Samuel had.

His reaction confirmed it.

“Tell us,” Adrien said.

Samuel sat again.

“Viktor and Marianne were in love.”

Camille felt the floor shift beneath her.

“My mother?”

“Before she married your father.”

Adrien stared at the photograph.

Samuel explained that Viktor and Marianne met during the investigation into the hidden financial network.

They grew close.

Too close.

But Marianne chose another life.

She married Camille’s father.

Viktor eventually married Adrien’s mother.

Their relationship ended.

Their loyalty did not.

“Margot believed Marianne turned Viktor against his family,” Samuel said. “She hated her.”

Camille understood.

“Evelyn’s death wasn’t random.”

“No.”

“Margot?”

“We could never prove it.”

Adrien’s eyes turned cold.

“We will now.”

The next week became war conducted through lawyers, accountants and security reports rather than bullets.

Camille recovered from her fever.

Adrien gave her space.

Painfully respectful space.

He never mentioned what he had said in the cathedral.

He also never asked her to return to work.

Instead he asked for a transition schedule.

That surprised her.

“You’re accepting my resignation?”

“No.”

“Adrien.”

“I’m respecting it.”

That was worse.

Because now she wanted to cry.

He hired two executive coordinators.

Camille trained them.

Neither was expected to become her.

Adrien made that explicit.

Ardan House renovations continued under security.

Celeste moved out of the apartment Adrien had arranged for her and temporarily stayed with friends.

She and Camille exchanged exactly one message.

No blame.

No friendship yet.

Just peace.

Henri remained missing.

Margot vanished.

The altered marriage contract went to prosecutors through attorneys whose names did not connect publicly to Adrien.

Then Camille found something in her mother’s trust.

A storage receipt.

Locker 317.

Inside were boxes of Marianne’s papers.

Letters.

Photographs.

And a cassette recorder.

Camille listened alone.

Her mother’s voice filled the storage room.

“If you are hearing this, Camille, you found Ardan House.”

Camille covered her mouth.

“I hope you chose it because you loved it. Not because anyone told you it belonged to you.”

Tears came.

Marianne spoke about Evelyn.

About Viktor.

About fear.

About leaving Chicago to protect Camille.

Then:

“Viktor was not the dangerous man people believed him to be. But his world was dangerous. I loved him once. I also knew love was not enough if it required me to disappear inside someone else’s life.”

Camille closed her eyes.

The sentence struck too close.

Her mother continued.

“If a Kovac ever asks you to sacrifice your future for his, walk away.”

The tape clicked.

Then resumed.

“But if he is willing to stand beside the future you chose for yourself, perhaps our children will be wiser than we were.”

Camille cried then.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

For everything her mother had never been able to explain.

A sound came behind her.

She turned.

Adrien stood at the storage entrance.

“How much did you hear?”

“Enough.”

She wiped her face.

“You followed me?”

“Tomas did.”

“Of course.”

“I waited outside.”

“Why?”

“Because it was yours.”

Again.

Respect.

The thing she had wanted from him for years.

Now he was giving it to her when she was trying hardest not to love him.

Camille held up the tape.

“Our parents had terrible timing.”

Adrien sat beside her.

“Apparently hereditary.”

She laughed unexpectedly.

So did he.

It was the first time she had heard him laugh without restraint.

For several seconds, everything felt easy.

Then Adrien found another envelope.

It was addressed to Viktor.

Never opened.

Inside was a single photograph.

Margot.

Much younger.

Beside Henri Laurent.

Not casually.

They were kissing.

The timestamp was nineteen years old.

Camille frowned.

“Henri said he barely knew her.”

“He lied.”

Adrien turned the photograph over.

Marianne had written:

HENRI KNOWS WHO MARGOT REALLY WORKS FOR.

Adrien immediately called Celeste.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Camille called.

Voicemail.

Adrien contacted security.

Celeste’s protection detail had lost contact nine minutes earlier.

Then Camille’s phone received a video.

Celeste sat in a chair.

Unhurt.

Terrified.

Behind her stood Henri.

Her father.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Adrien, bring Evelyn’s ledger to Ardan House.”

Celeste stared at him in horror.

May you like

Henri leaned closer to the camera.

“And Camille must come alone.”
