Chapter 3 - The Light We Left On

The barrel of the gun did not shake.
The scarred man stared coldly at Nora.
"You shouldn't have come here, lady," he said.
Marcus struggled wildly against his thick ropes.
"Nora, get out of here!" Marcus screamed.
"He works for the county treasurer!"
"He's destroying the evidence of the fraud!"
The scarred man laughed quietly and sinisterly.
"Your father took the fall, Nora."
"And your husband was stupid enough to help."
"Now I take the money and leave."
On the floor, Detective David Miller groaned faintly.
He was still alive, bleeding from his shoulder.
Nora saw David’s gun near her right shoe.
She had to make a choice immediately.
"The second key isn't in the cabin," Nora said.
Her voice was surprisingly steady and firm.
"Where is it?" the scarred man demanded.
"It's in my hands," Nora lied cleanly.
She raised her left hand, revealing the brass key.
It was the diary key Lily had given her.
The scarred man took one step toward her.
"Give it to me," he growled angrily.
"Come get it," Nora said softly.
She tossed the tiny key into the dark corner.
The man’s eyes tracked the shiny key.
He turned his body for one second.
Nora kicked the heavy wooden table forward.
It smashed directly into the man's knees.
He stumbled backward with a painful yell.
His gun fired wildly into the ceiling.
Wood splinters showered down all around them.
Nora dropped to the wooden floor immediately.
She grabbed David’s heavy black service weapon.
She leveled it with both shaking hands.
"Drop your gun!" Nora shouted with authority.
The scarred man recovered his balance quickly.
He pointed his pistol back at her face.
A loud shot exploded through the small room.
The scarred man collapsed heavily to the floor.
His pistol clattered harmlessly into the hearth.
Behind him stood a pale, shivering woman.
She held a smoking hunting rifle in her hands.
It was Sarah.
Nora dropped the heavy gun onto the rug.
"Sarah?" Nora cried out in complete disbelief.
Sarah dropped the rifle and fell forward.
Nora ran and caught her sister in a tight hug.
They collapsed together onto the wooden floor.
Both women sobbed uncontrollably in the dark.
"I'm so sorry, Nora," Sarah wept bitterly.
"I was so afraid for you."
"I am here now," Nora said, holding her tightly.
Marcus pulled his hands free from the frayed ropes.
He rushed over and wrapped his arms around them.
"I failed to keep you safe," Marcus wept quietly.
"You saved her life, Marcus," Nora corrected softly.
"You carried this terrible burden all alone."
"I shouldn't have kept secrets," Marcus admitted.
"We face everything together from now on."
Ten minutes later, distant sirens blared nearby.
Red and blue lights flashed through the trees.
Police cars and ambulances surrounded the cabin.
Paramedics carefully loaded David onto a stretcher.
"He's going to make a full recovery," the medic said.
State troopers placed the scarred man in handcuffs.
They also secured the thick Manila envelope.
It contained all the evidence needed to clear Marcus.
The entire corruption network was exposed that night.
Lily ran out from the parked car.
"Mommy!" Lily cried out in pure joy.
Sarah dropped to her knees on the wet grass.
She wrapped her daughter in a tight, loving embrace.
"My sweet girl," Sarah whispered through happy tears.
"You were so brave today."
Lily looked up at Marcus with wide blue eyes.
"Is he still my daddy?" Lily asked softly.
Sarah smiled warmly and nodded her head.
"He is your uncle, sweetie," Sarah explained gently.
"And he is going to take care of us."
Marcus knelt down beside the small child.
He gently brushed a dirty smudge from her cheek.
"I promise I will never hide again," Marcus said.
Six months passed like a quiet, healing dream.
The morning sun shone brightly on the diner.
A new wooden sign hung above the front door.
It read: VANCE FAMILY DINER AND BAKERY.
Inside, the warm smell of fresh cinnamon filled the air.
Customers chatted happily at every wooden booth.
Nora carried a tray of hot coffee to a table.
She wore a bright yellow apron once again.
Sarah stood behind the counter, smiling brightly.
She was working as the head pastry chef.
Her cheeks were full, healthy, and full of life.
Lily sat at the corner table near the window.
She was drawing a picture with colorful crayons.
It showed four people standing hand in hand.
A house with a bright yellow porch light sat behind them.
Marcus walked out from the back kitchen area.
He carried a large plate of chocolate pancakes.
He placed them carefully in front of little Lily.
"Extra whipped cream, just like you asked," Marcus smiled.
Lily giggled and hugged his arm tightly.
"Thank you, Uncle Marcus!" she cheered happily.
Marcus walked over to where Nora was standing.
He wrapped his arms gently around her waist.
He rested his chin softly on her shoulder.
"Are you happy, Nora?" Marcus asked quietly.
Nora looked around the crowded, warm diner.
She saw her sister laughing with a customer.
She saw the little girl eating her breakfast.
She felt the solid weight of her husband's love.
"We have our family back," Nora answered softly.
She turned around and kissed Marcus gently.
"I have never been happier in my entire life."
Outside, the warm morning sun rose high overhead.

The long night of secrets was finally over.
They sat down at the table together as one family.
