Chapter 1 - Look Under Your Desk

Emma Bellini grabbed Luca Romano’s sleeve and whispered:

“Please check under your desk, sir.”

Luca dropped to one knee and saw a small electronic device attached beneath the mahogany.

A red light blinked beside a strip of black tape.

Then he noticed one tiny gold thread caught beneath it.

Luca knew exactly whose dress that thread had come from.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Emma remained crouched beside the enormous desk, one hand planted on the Persian rug and the other pointing beneath the carved wooden edge.

Luca Romano had spent twenty years learning how not to react.

Men had aimed guns at him.

Politicians had threatened him.

Friends had betrayed him.

He had buried a father, two uncles, and enough enemies to understand that panic was usually more dangerous than whatever caused it.

But the six-year-old girl beside him was trembling so hard that the pink ribbon in her dark curls shook.

Luca slowly lifted his gaze.

“Emma.”

Her brown eyes met his.

“Who told you to look there?”

“Nobody.”

Her answer came too quickly.

Luca’s voice remained quiet.

“Then how did you know?”

Emma glanced toward the double doors of his private office.

Thirty minutes from now, those doors were supposed to open for five of the most powerful men on the East Coast.

Five families.

Five signatures.

One agreement that would end nearly seven years of retaliation, broken partnerships, burned businesses, and funerals that had made Luca’s name feared from Brooklyn to Boston.

The gathering was supposed to make him untouchable.

Instead, somebody had put a dangerous device beneath the exact desk where the five men would sit.

Emma swallowed.

“I heard people.”

“What people?”

“In the little hallway behind the kitchen.”

Luca’s senior adviser, Marco DeSantis, took one step forward.

“Boss—”

Luca raised a hand.

Marco stopped.

Luca kept his eyes on Emma.

“What did they say?”

Emma lowered her voice until Luca had to lean closer.

“One person said, ‘Make sure Romano is sitting when the five arrive.’”

The room seemed to shrink around him.

“And the other?”

Emma hesitated.

“Emma.”

“She said it was already done.”

She.

Luca felt the meaning of that word settle into the room.

Marco heard it too.

“Did you see her?”

Emma shook her head.

“No. Mama told me not to spy on grown-ups.”

“Your mother was here?”

Emma nodded.

“She's downstairs.”

Elena Bellini had worked in Luca’s residence and executive office for almost four years.

She cleaned rooms nobody else was trusted to enter.

She knew which cabinet Luca never opened in front of guests.

She knew his coffee arrived without sugar.

She knew Marco hated lilies because they reminded him of funerals.

She also knew when not to ask questions.

In four years, Elena had never once stolen so much as a pen.

She had never repeated a private conversation.

And she had never brought Emma upstairs without permission.

Yet Emma was here.

That mattered.

Luca turned his head.

Marco understood immediately.

He reached for his phone.

“No alarms,” Luca said.

Marco frowned.

“If whoever placed this realizes we found it—”

“They may have another plan.”

Marco’s expression hardened.

“So what do you want?”

“Move the meeting.”

“To where?”

“The library.”

Marco nodded once.

“Quietly.”

“And get Carlo.”

Carlo Ferrante headed Luca’s security team.

More importantly, Carlo had once served in military explosive disposal before the Romano family hired him.

Luca pointed beneath the desk without touching anything.

“Tell him what we found. Nobody else.”

Marco left.

Emma remained beside Luca.

Her breathing had slowed slightly, but she kept looking toward the door.

“You did the right thing,” Luca told her.

Emma looked uncertain.

“Mama said I’m not supposed to bother you.”

“You didn't bother me.”

“She said you're very busy.”

“Today you were more important.”

Emma’s eyebrows lifted.

Luca almost smiled.

Then the office doors opened.

Elena Bellini rushed inside.

“Emma!”

The change in Luca was immediate.

He rose.

Elena crossed the room and dropped to her knees beside her daughter.

“What are you doing upstairs?”

“I’m sorry, Mama.”

Elena cupped Emma’s face.

“I told you to stay downstairs.”

“I heard them.”

Elena froze.

Luca saw it.

It lasted less than a second.

But Luca Romano had built an empire by noticing fractions of seconds.

“Elena,” he said.

She looked at him.

Her face had gone pale.

“What did she hear?”

Elena slowly stood.

“I don't know.”

“She heard two people discussing my desk.”

Elena glanced at Emma.

Emma lowered her eyes.

Luca continued.

“One of them was a woman.”

The color disappeared from Elena’s face completely.

Luca noticed.

“So you do know something.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“I said I don't.”

He stepped closer.

She instinctively moved between him and Emma.

That tiny movement struck Luca harder than any denial.

Elena was afraid of him.

Not because he had threatened her.

Because she believed he might threaten Emma.

Luca lowered his voice.

“Your daughter just saved several lives. I’m not going to hurt either of you.”

Elena’s eyes flicked toward the underside of the desk.

“You found it?”

Luca stopped.

There it was.

Not found what?

You found it.

Marco had returned to the doorway just in time to hear her.

His hand moved beneath his jacket.

Luca raised one finger without looking at him.

Marco stopped.

“Elena,” Luca said carefully, “how did you know?”

She closed her eyes.

Emma clutched the side of her dress.

“Mama?”

Elena opened her eyes again.

“I saw someone leave your office last night.”

“Who?”

“I couldn't see her face.”

“But?”

“She was wearing a formal gown bag over one arm. She came from the private elevator.”

Luca felt something cold form in his stomach.

Only eight people had authorization for the private elevator.

Marco.

Carlo.

Three senior family officers.

Luca himself.

His attorney.

And Sofia Caruso.

The woman he was supposed to marry in two weeks.

Elena continued.

“I thought she was part of the wedding staff. This morning, I found a small piece of gold fabric near the elevator.”

Luca reached beneath the desk only far enough to examine the thread caught in the tape.

Gold.

Sofia’s engagement celebration gown had been custom-made from gold silk.

He had seen her wearing it twelve hours earlier.

Yet suspicion was not proof.

Luca straightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“Because somebody left something in my locker.”

“What?”

“A photograph.”

“Of what?”

Emma.

The answer appeared on Elena’s face before she said it.

“My daughter leaving school.”

Luca’s eyes changed.

Emma looked between them, not fully understanding.

Elena whispered, “There was a note.”

“What did it say?”

“Forget what you saw.”

Luca became very still.

Threats against him were business.

Threats against a child were different.

“What did you do with the photograph?”

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

“In the lining of my purse.”

“Bring it.”

Elena hesitated.

“Now.”

She took Emma’s hand.

Luca stopped her with a softer voice.

“Elena.”

She turned.

“You and Emma aren't going back downstairs.”

Her shoulders stiffened.

“I'm not asking.”

“Where should we go?”

“My private apartment upstairs.”

Marco stared at Luca.

Few people outside Luca’s immediate family had ever been allowed there.

Luca ignored him.

“You’ll stay there until I know who is responsible.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't want Emma involved in this.”

“She already is.”

“She’s six.”

“And because she’s six, I’m going to make certain nobody gets near her.”

Something changed in Elena’s expression.

Not trust.

Not yet.

But perhaps the beginning of it.

Carlo arrived five minutes later.

He examined the device without disturbing it.

His face became grim.

“Clear this floor.”

“How long?”

“I don't know yet.”

“Can it be handled?”

“Yes.”

“Quietly?”

Carlo looked at Luca.

“That depends what you mean by quietly.”

“I have five dons arriving in twenty-five minutes.”

Carlo stared at him.

“You cannot hold that meeting here.”

“The meeting has to happen.”

“Then hold it somewhere else.”

“The library.”

Carlo nodded.

“And Luca?”

“What?”

“Whoever did this knew the exact schedule.”

Nobody spoke.

That was the truth none of them wanted to say aloud.

The schedule had changed three times.

The final time had been confirmed at midnight.

Only seven people knew.

One of them had betrayed Luca.

At 11:42 a.m., the first black sedan appeared below.

Don Michael Santoro of Philadelphia.

Two minutes later came Joseph Falcone from Boston.

Then Anthony Russo from Providence.

Frank Deluca from Newark.

And finally Salvatore Marchetti, the oldest and most suspicious of them all.

Five dons.

Five entourages.

Five men who would interpret the smallest irregularity as an ambush.

Luca buttoned his navy jacket.

Marco leaned toward him.

“If they discover what was under your desk, they'll think you planned it.”

“I know.”

“If Sofia is behind this—”

“I said if.”

Marco stopped.

Luca walked toward the library.

At the staircase, Elena appeared above him.

Emma stood beside her.

Luca looked up.

Elena held the photograph in her hand.

“I found something else.”

Luca climbed two steps.

“What?”

She handed him the photograph.

It showed Emma outside Saint Catherine’s Elementary School.

But the image itself wasn't what made Luca’s stomach tighten.

Someone had written a date on the back.

Tomorrow’s date.

Beneath it were five words.

BRING THE MOTHER OR ELSE.

Luca stared at Elena.

“Why would they want you?”

“I don't know.”

But again, he saw the hesitation.

“Elena.”

Before she could answer, Marco’s voice came through Luca’s earpiece.

“They're all here.”

Luca turned toward the library.

Five dons waited beyond those doors.

One traitor was somewhere inside his organization.

And the woman he was supposed to marry was due to arrive at noon.

Luca looked back at Elena.

“Stay upstairs.”

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Sofia.

I’M IN THE PRIVATE ELEVATOR.

Luca looked toward the polished brass doors across the hall.

The elevator bell rang.

May you like

The doors began to open.

And someone inside was holding Elena’s missing purse.
