Chapter 9 - What My Father Had Hidden

The entire mansion went silent.
Adrien stared at Elena.
"Sophia?"
Elena nodded.
"She said she was coming back."
His mother covered her mouth.
Adrien looked toward Daniel.
Daniel had gone completely still.
"You knew."
Daniel said nothing.
"You knew Sophia was alive."
Daniel's silence answered him.
Adrien stepped forward.
"Where is she?"
Daniel looked at him.
"She's not coming for you."
"Then why is she coming?"
"Because she wants Lily."
Adrien's expression hardened.
"She's her mother."
Daniel smiled.
"And you're her father."
Adrien froze.
The words sounded different when Daniel said them.
Adrien looked at Lily.
The little girl was holding Elena's hand.
He thought about the photograph.
The birth certificate.
Sophia's letters.
The years of silence.
Everything finally made sense.
But one question remained.
"Why did Sophia hide Lily?"
Daniel answered.
"Because she knew you were being watched."
Adrien looked at his mother.
She nodded.
"Your father wanted to bring Lily home."
"Then why didn't he?"
"Because he died before he could."
Adrien looked down.
His father had left him a responsibility he had never understood.
Protect Lily.
Find Sophia.
Expose Daniel.
Adrien turned toward the dining room.
The documents were still there.
He picked them up.
"Daniel."
Daniel looked at him.
"You wanted my name."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"I wanted control."
"You'll get neither."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
The mansion doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Older than Adrien remembered.
Tired.
Wet from the rain.
But unmistakably familiar.
Sophia.
Lily dropped Elena's hand.
"Mama!"
The little girl ran.
Sophia fell to her knees.
She caught Lily in her arms.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Adrien watched them.
Then Sophia looked at him.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Adrien."
He stepped closer.
"You left."
"I had no choice."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I thought that was safer."
"For whom?"
"For you."
Adrien looked at Lily.
"You were protecting her."
"Yes."
"And my father helped."
"Yes."
"Daniel?"
Sophia's expression hardened.
"He threatened everyone."
Adrien nodded.
"I know."
Sophia looked toward Daniel.
"You still haven't told him the worst part."
Adrien turned.
"What worst part?"
Sophia looked at Daniel.
"Tell him."
Daniel said nothing.
Adrien walked toward him.
"Tell me."
Daniel stared at him.
Then he said:
"Your father wasn't protecting Lily from me."
Adrien stopped.
"He was protecting me from her."
Adrien frowned.
"What?"
Daniel continued:
"Your father discovered Sophia had evidence against me."
"That's not new."
"No."
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"He discovered something else."
"What?"
"She wasn't working alone."
Adrien looked at Sophia.
She closed her eyes.
Adrien's mother stepped forward.
"Adrien..."
"What?"
His mother whispered:
"I was the one who helped Sophia."
Adrien stared.
"You?"
She nodded.
"I helped her hide Lily."
Adrien looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because I knew Daniel would eventually find her."
Sophia hugged Lily tighter.
Adrien understood.
The family had been divided for years.
But there was one person who had remained at the center of everything.
Daniel.
He had manipulated everyone.
He had created fear.
He had controlled the estate.
He had used Adrien's father's death.
He had hidden Lily.
But now the evidence existed.
Adrien held up the folder.
"You are finished."
Daniel laughed.
"Do you really think those papers matter?"
Adrien looked at him.
"They aren't the only evidence."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Adrien took out his phone.
"The entire conversation has been recorded."
Daniel's eyes widened.
Adrien had activated the recording before entering the dining room.
Daniel looked around.
Security officers entered through the doors.
The police followed.
Adrien had called them before returning from the chapel.
Daniel stepped backward.
His confidence finally disappeared.
Adrien did not move.
He watched as Daniel was taken away.
When the doors closed, the mansion became quiet.
Lily walked toward Adrien.
She looked up.
"Is he gone?"
Adrien knelt.
"Yes."
"Forever?"
Adrien smiled.
"He can't hurt you anymore."
She wrapped her arms around him.
Adrien held her tightly.
Behind them, Sophia began crying.
Adrien stood.
He looked at her.
"We need to talk."
Sophia nodded.
"I know."
Adrien looked toward his mother.
Then Lily.
Then the family home.
For the first time, the mansion did not feel empty.
But there was still one final document.
The one Adrien had not opened.
His father's final letter.
Adrien picked it up.
On the envelope were five words:
"Open this when Lily is home."
He looked at the little girl.
She was home.
Adrien opened the letter.
May you like
And the first line made him stop breathing.
"My son, there is one more thing you must know..."
