Chapter 6 - The Man Behind The Lie

The door opened.

I expected to see a stranger.

A threat.

Someone who had been following Lily from the shadows.

But the person standing there was someone I never thought I would see again.

A man with gray hair.

A tired face.

Eyes I had spent years trying to remember.

My body stopped moving.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

"Dad?"

The word escaped before I could stop it.

The man stared at me.

And for the first time in eight years, my father looked at me like he was afraid.

Not surprised.

Not happy.

Afraid.

Lily stepped closer to me.

"That's him."

I looked down at her.

"What?"

She pointed at the man.

"My mommy said he was the person who kept us safe."

My heart pounded.

I looked back at the man standing in the doorway.

The man who was supposed to be buried.

The man whose grave I had visited.

The man whose death I had accepted.

"What is happening?"

My father's expression changed.

"Ethan..."

I stepped backward.

"No."

My voice became harder.

"No, you don't get to say my name like nothing happened."

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"You died."

Silence.

"You died eight years ago."

"I know."

"Then explain why you're standing in front of me."

My father looked past me.

At Lily.

His expression broke.

For a second, he looked like a man who had been carrying pain for years.

Then he whispered:

"Because I failed both of you."

Those words confused me more than anything else.

Both of you.

I looked at Lily.

Then back at him.

"What does that mean?"

My father stepped inside and closed the door.

The sound echoed through the old office.

"We don't have much time."

I almost laughed.

"That's your first sentence after disappearing for eight years?"

"Ethan—"

"No."

I moved closer.

"You don't disappear. You don't let me believe you died. You don't let me bury you. And then you show up saying we don't have time."

My father accepted every word.

He didn't defend himself.

That made me even angrier.

"Tell me the truth."

He looked at me.

"The truth is bigger than you think."

"I don't care."

I held up the photograph.

"Explain this."

His eyes moved to the picture.

The one showing me holding Lily as a baby.

His face changed.

"You found it."

"Yes."

"Then Claire told you everything."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Claire disappeared. Someone took her from the hospital."

My father's expression changed instantly.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

He looked toward the window.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Real fear.

"Then we are already too late."

I hated that sentence.

Everyone kept saying things like they knew something I didn't.

Everyone had pieces of my life except me.

"What happened to Claire?"

My father didn't answer.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

His voice cracked.

"Ethan, I spent eight years trying to keep you away from this."

"From what?"

He looked at Lily.

"From the people who wanted her gone."

The room became silent.

I looked at the little girl beside me.

A child who had walked into my store with eleven dollars and thirty-seven cents.

A child everyone was afraid of.

"Why?"

My father looked at me.

"Because Lily is proof."

"Proof of what?"

He walked toward the desk.

Slowly.

Like every step carried years of regret.

"Your mother was investigating something before she died."

I froze.

"My mother?"

I had barely remembered my mother.

She died when I was young.

Everyone told me it was an accident.

My father continued.

"She discovered a network of people who controlled information, money, and power."

I frowned.

"That sounds impossible."

"It isn't."

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

I stared.

"I never knew that was there."

"That was the point."

He pulled out a folder.

Old.

Damaged.

My name was written on it.

Ethan Cole.

He handed it to me.

"Your mother found evidence that certain people had been manipulating families for years."

I opened the folder.

Documents.

Photos.

Names.

My eyes stopped on one page.

A photograph of Claire.

Another photograph of my father.

And another person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected to see.

"What is this?"

My father looked away.

"That's the person who started everything."

"Who?"

Before he could answer, the lights flickered.

The old building went dark.

Lily grabbed my hand.

Someone was outside.

I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

My father immediately turned serious.

"He's here."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

My father didn't answer.

Instead, he moved toward the old cabinet.

Behind it was another door.

A hidden door.

My entire life had been surrounded by secrets.

Even my father's office had secrets.

"Get Lily inside."

I stared at him.

"You want me to hide?"

"I want you both alive."

The footsteps stopped outside.

My father looked at me.

"Ethan, listen to me."

His voice became urgent.

"If that person finds Lily, everything your mother died for disappears."

The door handle moved.

Once.

Then again.

Someone was trying to enter.

I looked at my father.

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

The door handle stopped.

A voice came from outside.

"Daniel."

My father froze.

I looked at him.

Nobody called him Daniel anymore.

Not since he died.

The voice continued.

"You should have stayed dead."

My father closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

"He found us."

The door slowly opened.

A man stepped into the office.

Older.

Calm.

Wearing an expensive suit.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Lily.

And smiled.

"Ethan..."

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it before.

In my father's photographs.

In my mother's old files.

And in the one memory I could never explain.

The man took one step forward.

May you like

Then said the words that changed everything.

"I see you finally learned the truth about your real father..."
