Chapter 5 - The Man With the Gun

Alina pulled Mia behind her.

Vincent did not move.

Cole lowered the weapon.

“Before you do something stupid, look at the safety.”

It was engaged.

Vincent’s eyes remained cold.

“Put it down.”

Cole did.

Marco took it.

Cole pointed toward the photograph.

“I hid that because I was protecting Lucia’s secret.”

“You knew Alina’s mother?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Cole looked at Alina.

“Your mother saved Vincent’s life when he was nine.”

Vincent stared.

“I don’t remember her.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

Cole explained.

Vincent’s father had survived an assassination attempt decades earlier.

Lucia Ruiz, then a young emergency nurse, treated Vincent after he was injured during the attack.

Later she discovered something inside the Marchetti organization.

A betrayal.

She helped Vincent’s father identify it.

In return, he promised to protect Lucia and her future children.

“Why Mia?” Alina asked.

“I don’t know.”

Cole’s answer seemed genuine.

Daniel was brought upstairs.

When he saw Cole, he attacked him.

Vincent’s men separated them.

“You!”

Daniel shouted.

“You gave Voss our address!”

Cole stared.

“I’ve never met you.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

“I’ve never seen you in my life.”

Daniel described the man who recruited him.

Older.

Gray hair.

Scar beneath his left ear.

Cole’s face changed.

Vincent noticed.

“Who?”

Cole looked at him.

“Samuel Marchetti.”

Vincent’s uncle.

A man believed dead for fourteen years.

The room fell silent.

Vincent’s father had blamed Samuel for stealing from the family.

Samuel’s boat exploded off Sicily.

No body was recovered.

Vincent had been seventeen.

“He’s dead.”

Cole shook his head.

“I saw him two years ago.”

Vincent grabbed him.

“And you said nothing?”

“I wasn’t sure.”

“You were sure enough to hide photographs.”

“I was trying to find proof.”

Vincent released him.

Daniel whispered, “Voss works for Samuel.”

Everything shifted.

The bombing.

Dawson.

The infiltration.

Mia.

Vincent finally understood that someone had spent years building a path into his home.

And Alina had been placed directly at its center.

But why?

They went to the hospital vault before dawn.

Daniel’s key opened an old storage room beneath the maternity wing.

Inside was a safe.

Vincent entered the date written on Lucia’s photograph.

The safe opened.

Inside were documents, a necklace, and a sealed letter.

The letter was addressed to Vincent.

He opened it.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

Vincent—

If you are reading this, Samuel has returned.

Trust Lucia Ruiz.

Protect her daughter as you would protect your own blood.

The final sentence made Vincent’s face change.

Because her daughter is the only living witness to what Samuel did.

Vincent looked at Alina.

“Your mother witnessed something.”

“What?”

He continued reading.

The rest of the page had been cut away.

Someone had reached the vault before them.

Daniel examined the necklace.

A silver medallion.

Mia touched it.

“I’ve seen that.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Where?”

“Grandma’s box.”

Alina stared.

“My mother died before Mia was born.”

Mia shook her head.

“No. The picture box.”

Alina suddenly remembered.

A storage container containing Lucia’s belongings.

She had never opened most of it.

It was stored in a warehouse outside the city.

They drove there under heavy protection.

The unit had been disturbed.

Boxes were open.

Lucia’s journals were gone.

But Mia crawled beneath an old table.

“Here.”

She found a tin box taped underneath.

Inside was a cassette recorder.

Vincent pressed play.

Lucia’s voice filled the room.

“If Alina ever hears this, I’m sorry.”

Alina covered her mouth.

Her mother had been dead eleven years.

Lucia continued.

“Samuel Marchetti murdered his brother’s first wife.”

Vincent froze.

“My mother?”

Cole stared.

Lucia’s voice continued.

“And I saw him do it.”

Vincent’s mother had supposedly died in a car accident.

Lucia described Samuel sabotaging the vehicle.

Vincent’s father discovered the truth too late.

He drove Samuel from the family.

But Lucia had preserved evidence.

Samuel never stopped searching for it.

Then Lucia said something stranger.

“The evidence is not in the vault. I put it somewhere Samuel would never think to search.”

The tape clicked.

Alina leaned closer.

“Where?”

Lucia answered.

“With the child who could never understand what she was carrying.”

Alina looked at Mia.

“No.”

The recording ended.

Then Mia lifted her repaired wooden truck.

Something rattled inside.

Vincent took it carefully.

He removed the wheel he had repaired.

A tiny metal capsule fell into his palm.

Alina stared.

“That truck belonged to me when I was a child.”

Vincent opened the capsule.

Inside was a microfilm strip.

And written around its edge was one name:

SAMUEL MARCHETTI.

Before anyone could speak, the storage unit door slammed shut.

A lock clicked outside.

Then gasoline began pouring beneath the door.
