Chapter 6 - The Price of Silence

I found Evan in the driveway.
He was standing beside a black SUV when I threw the printed transaction at his chest.
He looked down.
Then at me.
“Explain.”
His face changed.
“Claire.”
“Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
“It’s not what it looks like.”
“That sentence should be illegal.”
Dominic stood several feet behind me.
He said nothing.
This was mine.
Evan picked up the page.
“Marco paid me to disappear.”
I laughed.
“You expect me to believe that makes this better?”
“No.”
“What did you give him?”
“Nothing.”
“He paid you three quarters of a million dollars for nothing?”
“He thought I destroyed the ledger.”
“Did you tell him you did?”
“Yes.”
“So you lied to him.”
“Yes.”
“And to me.”
“Yes.”
“And Dominic.”
“Yes.”
I folded my arms.
“Anything else?”
Evan looked exhausted.
“I used the money to stay off-grid and keep paying people to watch you.”
I stared.
“You watched us?”
“From a distance.”
“For four years?”
“Yes.”
“You saw Lily?”
His face softened.
“Every birthday.”
My anger became almost unbearable.
“You watched your daughter grow up through photographs.”
“I thought it was the only way.”
“You were wrong.”
“I know.”
“No, Evan. You don’t get to say that like it fixes something.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that.”
He closed his eyes.
Dominic finally spoke.
“Why come back now?”
Evan looked toward him.
“Because Marco started asking about Claire.”
“When?”
“Four months ago.”
The exact time I began working at Dominic’s house.
My skin went cold.
“He knew I worked there?”
“Before you did.”
I stared.
“What?”
Evan reached into his coat and pulled out another photograph.
Me.
At a coffee shop.
Taken months earlier.
On the back:
HOUSEKEEPER OPENING. PUSH HER TOWARD D.M.
My hands shook.
“I didn’t apply because of Marco.”
“You saw the advertisement online.”
“Yes.”
“He paid the agency to place it where you would see it.”
“Why?”
“To get you inside Dominic’s house.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“What did he think she had?”
“The ledger.”
“But I didn’t.”
“Marco didn’t know that.”
I thought of everything.
The job.
The timing.
Marco’s comments.
His immediate suspicion toward me.
He had been testing me.
Waiting to see if I knew.
“And Lily?”
Evan looked ashamed.
“He underestimated her.”
Despite everything, I almost laughed.
That sounded like Lily.
Dominic looked toward the mansion.
“Marco’s in custody.”
“For now,” Evan said.
Dominic turned.
“What does that mean?”
“Cavalli has people in the department.”
Anthony approached.
“We already arranged federal transfer.”
Evan nodded.
“Good.”
“Why didn’t you tell us that earlier?”
“I didn’t know who here was clean.”
Dominic looked insulted.
Then seemed to recognize the irony.
Fair.
By sunrise, federal agents had arrived.
The ledger was enough to expose years of bribery, extortion, stolen funds, and Marco’s partnership with the Cavalli organization.
Dominic’s own businesses appeared too.
That was unavoidable.
He spent hours with attorneys.
Then he did something nobody expected.
He agreed to cooperate.
Not because he suddenly became innocent.
He wasn’t.
Dominic Moretti had built part of his empire in darkness.
He knew that.
But Sofia’s death had forced him to look at the cost.
Leo had forced him to look harder.
When he entered the kitchen that afternoon, the soap mess had finally been cleaned.
Lily sat at the table eating strawberries.
Leo colored beside her.
Dominic stopped.
Lily looked up.
“Are you still mad?”
He blinked.
“At what?”
“The bubbles.”
A faint smile appeared.
“No.”
“Good.”
She returned to her strawberry.
Leo looked up.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Can Lily come back tomorrow?”
Dominic glanced at me.
I raised an eyebrow.
“That depends on whether her mother still has a job.”
He almost smiled again.
“She does.”
I should have felt relieved.
Instead I felt something warmer.
More dangerous.
Not fear.
Trust.
It had been a long time since I trusted anyone.
Evan entered the kitchen.
The warmth vanished.
Lily jumped down.
She stared at him.
Children know more than adults give them credit for.
“Who are you?”
Evan’s face broke.
He crouched.
“I’m Evan.”
She tilted her head.
“That’s my daddy’s name.”
“Yes.”
“Mommy said you went away.”
I closed my eyes.
Evan swallowed.
“I did.”
“Why?”
There was no answer simple enough.
I stepped forward.
“Lily, sweetheart—”
“No.”
Evan looked at me.
“I owe her something.”
He looked back at Lily.
“I was scared.”
She considered that.
“Of monsters?”
“In a way.”
“Daddy monsters?”
Evan smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“Did you hide?”
“Yes.”
“For a long time?”
“Yes.”
Lily frowned.
“That wasn’t nice to Mommy.”
“No.”
“Mommy cried before.”
My chest tightened.
Evan’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily looked at me.
“Do I hug him?”
The question nearly destroyed me.
“You only hug someone if you want to.”
She thought about it.
Then walked forward and gave Evan the smallest, quickest hug imaginable.
“Okay.”
She walked back to her strawberries.
Evan covered his face.
Dominic looked away.
Leo whispered to Lily, “That was fast.”
“I’m busy.”
I laughed.
The sound surprised everyone.
Especially me.
For a few days, hope became possible.
Marco was transferred to federal custody.
The ledger triggered investigations.
Several corrupt officers were arrested.
The Cavalli organization began unraveling.
Evan agreed to testify.
Dominic surrendered records from his legitimate and illegitimate businesses.
His lawyers warned him he might lose companies.
He answered, “Then I lose them.”
The old Dominic Moretti would never have said that.
One evening I found him outside on the terrace.
Leo and Lily were chasing bubbles across the lawn.
“You’re watching them,” I said.
“I’m learning.”
“What?”
“How much I missed.”
I leaned against the railing.
“Leo loves you.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
He glanced at me.
“I know now.”
I looked toward the children.
“Lily loves everyone until proven otherwise.”
“That’s dangerous.”
“She gets it from me.”
He looked at me.
“Do you still?”
“Still what?”
“Love everyone until proven otherwise?”
I considered Evan.
“No.”
Dominic nodded.
“Probably smarter.”
Before I could respond, Anthony approached.
His expression erased the peace.
“Dominic.”
“What?”
“Marco’s transport convoy was hit.”
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“Is he dead?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“He’s gone.”
My blood cooled.
“Escaped?”
Anthony nodded.
“Three officers dead.”
Dominic turned toward the lawn.
Leo and Lily were still playing.
“Get them inside.”
We moved immediately.
That night, security doubled.
Dominic refused to sleep.
Neither did I.
At two in the morning, I found a yellow envelope beneath my bedroom door.
No one had knocked.
My name was written across it.
Inside was a photograph.
Leo and Lily playing on the lawn that afternoon.
Taken from outside the property.
On the back:
SOFIA TOOK SOMETHING FROM ME.
NOW I’LL TAKE SOMETHING FROM YOU.
My hands went cold.
Dominic read it once.
Then again.
“Marco got onto the property.”
Anthony shook his head.
“Impossible.”
Dominic looked at the photograph.
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“He didn’t need to.”
“What do you mean?”
Dominic turned the image toward the light.
In the reflection of the terrace doors, a figure could be seen standing behind us.
Inside the house.
Watching the children.
Anthony enlarged the reflection.
A face appeared.
Not Marco.
Evan.
I stared.
“That can’t be right.”
Dominic’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Marco’s voice whispered:
“Ask Claire’s husband why he helped me escape.”
I turned toward Evan’s empty guest room.
Dominic looked at Anthony.
“Where is he?”
Anthony checked his phone.
His face drained.
“Gone.”
I ran upstairs.
Evan’s room was empty.
On the bed sat Lily’s stuffed rabbit.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
Claire,
I’m sorry you’re going to hate me again.
But Marco has Leo.
I’m going to bring him back.
I stopped breathing.
Behind me Dominic said, “Leo is asleep in his room.”
We ran down the hall.
Dominic opened Leo’s bedroom door.
The bed was empty.
May you like
The window stood open.
And from somewhere outside in the darkness, Lily suddenly screamed...
