Chapter 7 - The Night Paulo Came Back to Life

Dominic copied the memory card.

Three copies.

One went to his attorney.

One to federal investigators.

One remained with us.

“We're not bargaining with the only evidence,” he said.

For the first time since this began, I understood why people followed him.

Not because he was loud.

Because fear did not make him careless.

We returned to Pier 9.

Victor waited in a warehouse.

Paulo sat in a chair.

Mrs. Bianchi beside him.

Alive.

My husband looked older.

Thinner.

But when his eyes found mine, I recognized him instantly.

“Alina.”

Four years of grief broke inside me.

I wanted to run toward him.

Dominic stopped me gently.

Victor smiled.

“Card.”

Dominic held it up.

“Paulo first.”

Victor's expression changed.

He had expected obedience.

Instead, Dominic told him the evidence had already been distributed.

Victor's leverage disappeared in one sentence.

Sirens sounded outside.

Victor turned toward Margaret.

“You.”

She smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

Federal investigators entered.

Victor did not fight.

Neither did his associates.

The confrontation ended almost quietly.

Real power, I learned, sometimes disappeared without shouting.

I ran to Paulo.

I struck his chest once.

Then I hugged him.

He held me while I cried.

“I’m sorry.”

“Four years.”

“I know.”

“Four years, Paulo.”

“I know.”

Lucia wasn't there.

That reunion happened later.

When Paulo walked through Dominic's front door, Lucia stared at him.

He knelt.

She approached slowly.

Then she touched the small scar above his eyebrow.

The one she remembered.

“Daddy?”

Paulo broke.

He cried before she did.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

I turned away because some moments feel too private even when they belong to you.

That should have been the ending.

It wasn't.

Victor had been arrested.

Margaret had told the truth.

Paulo was home.

But Dominic remained troubled.

One question didn't fit.

Who had altered his coffee?

Victor denied ordering it.

Margaret denied doing it.

The disguised woman had disappeared.

Then laboratory results arrived.

The coffee had indeed contained a sedating substance.

Not enough to cause lasting harm.

Enough to weaken Dominic's concentration.

Someone had wanted him vulnerable during the meeting.

But Victor's plan had already been unfolding elsewhere.

Dominic reviewed the security footage again.

Lucia watched from across the room.

Suddenly she said:

“That's not the same lady.”

Dominic paused the footage.

“What?”

“The shoes.”

The woman entering the study wore black shoes.

The woman leaving through a distant hallway camera wore brown ones.

Two women.

One entered.

Another left.

Someone inside the mansion had changed clothes.

Dominic enlarged the image.

The face remained hidden.

But a hand appeared briefly.

A distinctive ring.

Mrs. Bianchi gasped.

Dominic stared.

I recognized the ring too.

We had seen it every day.

Dominic slowly turned toward the study door.

Someone stood on the other side.

May you like

The handle began to move.

And the person wearing that ring walked in.
