Chapter 7 - The Truth That Destroyed an Empire

I had imagined Victor Moretti many times before I ever saw him.
A man who could betray his own brother had to look dangerous.
Cold.
Cruel.
The kind of person whose intentions were written clearly across his face.
But when the front doors of Blackwater House opened, the man standing outside did not look like a monster.
That was the most frightening part.
He looked human.
Victor Moretti stood beneath the gray morning sky wearing a dark coat, his hands resting calmly at his sides.
He was older than Alessandro by only a few years.
Same sharp features.
Same dark hair.
Same family resemblance.
But where Alessandro carried control like armor, Victor carried something else.
Regret.
At least, that was what I saw.
The security team surrounded the entrance.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
The entire mansion seemed to be holding its breath.
Alessandro walked forward.
I stayed back with Emma, exactly as he had asked.
But my eyes never left him.
Because after everything we had learned, after the poisoned inhaler, the missing security footage, and the hidden access code, this moment felt impossible.
Two brothers standing face to face.
One almost dead.
The other accused of causing it.
Victor looked at Alessandro.
“Hello, brother.”
The word echoed through the entrance hall.
Brother.
Not boss.
Not enemy.
Brother.
Alessandro’s expression did not change.
“Why are you here?”
Victor looked around.
“At some point, I thought you would come looking for me.”
“I did.”
A pause.
“Not like this.”
Victor gave a small, tired smile.
“That’s because you always believed the worst version of me.”
Alessandro’s eyes hardened.
“You poisoned my inhaler.”
The accusation landed heavily.
Even the guards looked uncomfortable.
Victor did not react immediately.
He simply looked at Alessandro.
Then he laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he was hurt.
“You really believe that?”
“I saw the evidence.”
“No.”
Victor shook his head.
“You saw what someone wanted you to see.”
The words created a sudden silence.
I looked at Alessandro.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his expression.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
Victor continued.
“You think I’m stupid enough to use my own access code?”
“You had access.”
“So did half the people in this house.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Your code opened the security room.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“Explain.”
Victor looked away.
And for the first time, he seemed tired.
“Because someone used my code.”
Nobody spoke.
The guards exchanged looks.
Alessandro remained still.
“Who?”
Victor looked directly at him.
“That’s what I came here to tell you.”
A cold wind entered through the open doors.
I felt Emma’s hand tighten around mine.
She was watching everything.
Listening.
Remembering.
Just like always.
Alessandro motioned toward the office.
“Inside.”
Victor entered.
The same room where Emma had saved Alessandro’s life.
The same room where everything had started.
The irony was impossible to ignore.
Victor looked around.
His eyes stopped on the desk.
The place where the inhaler had been.
“You almost died here.”
Alessandro’s voice was cold.
“Because of you.”
Victor closed his eyes briefly.
“No.”
He opened them.
“Because of someone who wanted you to think it was me.”
Alessandro stood across from him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Victor looked at him.
“I expect you to investigate.”
That answer surprised everyone.
Because he was not begging.
He was not defending himself.
He was challenging Alessandro to find the truth.
The same way Alessandro had always done.
The security officer placed a folder on the table.
“We found additional footage.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“From where?”
“The east hallway.”
Everyone turned.
The officer continued.
“The camera was not damaged.”
My heart tightened.
“Meaning?”
“Someone only disabled the west wing camera.”
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
“To create one blind spot.”
A realization passed through the room.
Someone wanted them focused on the missing footage.
Someone wanted them to discover Victor’s access code.
Someone wanted the accusation to happen quickly.
Because the faster Alessandro blamed Victor, the easier it would be for the real person to disappear.
“Show me.”
The officer activated the footage.
The screen showed the hallway outside the security room.
A figure appeared.
Wearing a gray jacket.
Gloves.
Moving carefully.
Not rushing.
Not nervous.
Like someone who belonged there.
The video continued.
The person entered the security room.
A few minutes later, they left.
Then the officer paused.
“Zoom in.”
The image became clearer.
Everyone leaned forward.
And then I saw it.
A small detail.
Something familiar.
The watch.
My breath caught.
“That watch.”
Everyone looked at me.
Alessandro immediately noticed.
“What?”
I pointed toward the screen.
“He was wearing that watch.”
Victor looked confused.
“Who?”
I swallowed.
“Enzo.”
The room became silent.
Not because the name was unexpected.
Because somehow, it made everything worse.
Alessandro looked at the screen.
Then slowly looked at Victor.
For the first time, the two brothers shared the same realization.
They had both been fooled.
“No,” Alessandro whispered.
It was not denial.
It was disbelief.
Because Enzo was not just an employee.
He was the person Alessandro had trusted for decades.
The person who knew his schedule.
His habits.
His security.
His weaknesses.
Victor looked down.
“I tried to warn you.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Victor’s expression changed.
Pain.
“I did.”
Silence.
“I called you.”
Alessandro said nothing.
“I sent messages.”
Still nothing.
“Your security blocked every attempt.”
A terrible thought entered my mind.
Someone had not only tried to kill Alessandro.
Someone had isolated him.
Controlled the information around him.
Made sure he only saw what they wanted him to see.
Victor continued.
“Enzo has been removing people around you for months.”
“Why?”
Victor looked at the floor.
“Because he doesn’t want your empire.”
A pause.
“He wants your name.”
The words were heavy.
Alessandro stared at him.
Victor explained.
“He knows people fear Moretti.”
“He knows your family name opens doors.”
“But he also knows everyone would follow you.”
Victor’s voice lowered.
“So he needed you gone.”
The truth settled into the room.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Enzo had not wanted money.
He had wanted replacement.
He wanted Alessandro’s position.
His power.
His identity.
A person could steal money.
But stealing a legacy was different.
Emma suddenly stepped forward.
Everyone turned.
“Mama.”
I looked down.
“What?”
She pointed toward the screen.
“That man.”
My heart stopped.
“What about him?”
She looked at Victor.
“Not him.”
Then she pointed at Enzo’s picture.
“The other man.”
The room became quiet.
“What did you notice?” Alessandro asked gently.
Emma looked at the image.
“He smelled like the medicine.”
Everyone froze.
Alessandro crouched beside her.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“What did it smell like?”
Emma thought carefully.
“The same.”
She looked at him.
“The bad smell.”
I felt a chill.
Because my daughter had just confirmed what no one else could.
Enzo had been near the inhaler.
Near the security room.
Near the crime.
Alessandro stood slowly.
His face changed.
The pain disappeared.
The confusion disappeared.
Only determination remained.
“Find Enzo.”
The guards moved immediately.
But Victor stopped them.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Why?”
Victor looked at Alessandro.
“Because if he knows we figured it out, he’ll run.”
Alessandro studied his brother.
Then slowly nodded.
For the first time in years, the two brothers stood on the same side.
Not because they trusted each other completely.
Not yet.
But because they finally understood the truth.
The enemy had never been between them.
The enemy had been standing beside them.
Watching.
Waiting.
Pretending to be family.
Later that evening, as the search for Enzo began, I found Alessandro sitting alone again.
But this time, he was not looking at the city.
He was looking at Emma’s drawing.
The one with three people standing outside a house.
“You kept it,” I said.
He looked up.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at the paper.
“Because she reminded me of something.”
“What?”
“That power means nothing if you have nobody worth protecting.”
I looked at him.
The man everyone feared.
The man who controlled an empire.
The man who almost died because he trusted the wrong person.
And I realized something.
Alessandro Moretti had spent his entire life building walls.
Around his business.
Around his heart.
Around himself.
But a five-year-old girl had walked through those walls carrying nothing except kindness.
And somehow, that was the one thing no enemy could defeat.
A phone rang.
Alessandro answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“Where?”
He stood.
I knew before he spoke.
Something had happened.
“Did you find him?”
Alessandro looked toward the window.
His voice became cold.
“Yes.”
A long silence.
Then:
“Enzo was never trying to escape.”
The room went still.
“Then what was he doing?”
Alessandro looked back at us.
May you like
And his answer sent a chill through everyone.
“He was preparing his final move.”
