Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Hidden Recording

The video started with my name.
Not Adrian's.
Not the name of the man who owned the mansion.
Mine.
"Elena Marlow."
My entire body went cold.
I hadn't heard my full name spoken like that in years.
Not since before I changed my life.
Not since before I became invisible.
Lily tightened her grip around my fingers.
"Mama?"
I couldn't answer.
Because the voice coming from the screen belonged to someone I never expected to hear again.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
And full of hatred.
"Adrian Voss thinks he knows everyone inside his house."
The screen showed a dark room.
The camera angle was different from the security footage.
Someone had recorded it secretly.
The woman continued.
"But he never looked closely at the people standing right in front of him."
Adrian stepped closer to the monitor.
His face became harder with every word.
I watched him.
And I realized something.
He didn't know who she was.
But he knew what she was talking about.
"Play the entire thing," he ordered.
The security officer tried to respond through the communication system.
"Sir, we are still tracing the source."
Adrian ignored him.
"Play it."
The video continued.
A shadow moved across the screen.
Then the camera focused.
Not on the woman's face.
On a document sitting on a table.
A document with my name written across the top.
My breath disappeared.
Because I knew that document.
I had seen it before.
Years ago.
Before I ran.
Before I became a maid.
Before I promised myself Lily would never know anything about that world.
Adrian noticed my reaction.
"You know what that is."
It wasn't a question.
I looked away.
"I don't know."
His eyes narrowed.
"You are lying."
I hated that he was right.
But I had spent years surviving by lying.
Not because I wanted secrets.
Because secrets were sometimes the only thing protecting you.
The video changed.
The woman finally stepped into the light.
And the room went silent.
Adrian froze.
Because he recognized her.
I did too.
Her name was Victoria Hale.
She had been one of the most trusted people in Adrian Voss's organization.
His legal advisor.
His closest strategist.
The person who knew every contract.
Every account.
Every weakness.
And now she was standing on a hidden recording accusing him of something.
Victoria looked directly into the camera.
"If you are watching this, Adrian, then you survived."
A small smile appeared on her face.
Not a happy one.
A warning.
"That means someone failed."
Adrian's hands tightened.
"She knew about the attack."
I looked at him.
"You trusted her."
His eyes stayed on the screen.
"Everyone I trust eventually betrays me."
The words were quiet.
Almost like he wasn't surprised.
Only disappointed.
The video continued.
Victoria placed another file beside the document.
"The truth about Elena Marlow is hidden in this house."
My heart stopped.
Lily looked at me.
I immediately turned away.
No.
Not here.
Not in front of her.
Adrian noticed.
And for the first time, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Concern.
"What did she mean?"
I didn't answer.
"Elena."
The way he said my name made me look up.
It was the first time Adrian had called me by my name.
Not maid.
Not servant.
Elena.
"I asked you a question."
I swallowed.
"I don't know."
He stared at me.
Then he looked at Lily.
The room became painfully quiet.
Because both of us knew the same thing.
The truth was coming.
And neither of us could stop it.
The video suddenly glitched.
The image distorted.
Then Victoria's voice became louder.
"There is one person Adrian should fear more than his enemies."
A pause.
Then:
"The person who saved his life."
Everyone looked at Lily.
My daughter didn't understand.
She only hugged her rabbit backpack.
Adrian stared at the screen.
His expression turned suspicious.
"What does she mean?"
I didn't know.
I truly didn't know.
But deep inside, a terrible feeling started growing.
Because Victoria wasn't talking about Lily saving Adrian's life with the EpiPen.
She was talking about something else.
Something older.
Something connected to me.
The video ended.
The lights returned.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Adrian spoke.
"Search every room."
The guards immediately returned.
"Find Victoria Hale."
One guard hesitated.
"Sir, Victoria hasn't been seen since yesterday."
Adrian turned.
"What?"
"She left the property after the afternoon meeting."
A dangerous silence filled the room.
"Why wasn't I told?"
Nobody answered.
Because there was no good answer.
Someone had hidden information from Adrian Voss.
Inside his own house.
Again.
I looked at Lily.
She was tired.
Confused.
Scared.
I knew I needed to get her away.
I reached for her hand.
"We're leaving."
Adrian looked at me.
"No."
The word was simple.
But firm.
I stopped.
"My daughter needs to rest."
"Your daughter is the reason I'm alive."
"That doesn't mean she belongs here."
For the first time, anger flashed in his eyes.
Not toward Lily.
Toward me.
"You think I don't understand danger?"
I said nothing.
He stepped closer.
"I know exactly what happens when innocent people get caught between powerful enemies."
His voice became quieter.
"Because I have buried enough of them."
The words surprised me.
Adrian Voss didn't sound like a monster.
He sounded like someone carrying too many ghosts.
But I couldn't forget who he was.
"I can't let Lily become part of this."
His eyes met mine.
"She already is."
I hated that he was right.
Before I could respond, one of the guards rushed into the room.
"Mr. Voss."
Adrian turned.
The guard held a small envelope.
"We found this hidden behind the security panel."
Adrian took it.
No name.
No address.
Only one sentence written on the front.
His expression changed immediately.
"What does it say?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph that made his face lose all color.
I couldn't see it clearly.
But I saw enough.
A baby.
A hospital bracelet.
And a date.
A date from four years ago.
Adrian slowly looked at Lily.
Then at me.
His voice was barely audible.
"Elena..."
My heart started pounding.
Because he wasn't looking at me like a servant anymore.
He was looking at me like someone who had just discovered the impossible.
"What happened four years ago?"
I couldn't breathe.
Because I knew exactly what was written on that hospital bracelet.
May you like
And Adrian had just found the one secret I had spent my entire life trying to protect.
The name on the bracelet was his.
