Chapter 6 - The Daughter My Father Tried To Hide

The message stayed on my screen.
"Rowan, if Adrian tells you the truth, ask him who Lily's real father is."
I read it once.
Then again.
The words did not change.
They just became heavier.
Around me, the hotel lobby remained frozen.
Lily stood beside Adrian.
Sarah looked terrified.
Marcus looked like he already knew what was coming.
And Adrian...
Adrian looked tired.
Not afraid.
Not angry.
Just tired.
That bothered me more than anything.
A guilty man usually defended himself.
An innocent man usually demanded answers.
But Adrian looked like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
I lowered my phone.
"Who sent this?"
Nobody answered.
My eyes moved to Adrian.
"You know."
He did not deny it.
"I can guess."
"Then guess."
His expression hardened slightly.
"Someone who wants you to find the truth."
I almost smiled.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
I looked around.
"Everyone wants me to find the truth."
I pointed at the photograph.
"My father left a letter."
I looked at Marcus.
"You hid it."
I looked at Claire.
"You hid my mother's past."
Then I looked at Adrian.
"And you disappear for sixteen years, return on my birthday, and show me a necklace that belonged to my dead mother."
My voice became colder.
"Forgive me if I don't trust any of you."
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew I was right.
Trust was not something people could demand from me.
Especially not after years of lies.
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
"You're right."
The answer surprised me.
He stepped away from the girl.
"I don't expect you to believe me."
"Good."
"But there is something you need to know."
I waited.
"Your father spent years making sure you believed one story."
"What story?"
"That he was protecting you."
The words hit differently.
Because I had spent my entire life believing my father was complicated.
A hard man.
A dangerous man.
But still my father.
Adrian shook his head.
"He wasn't protecting you."
The lobby became silent.
"He was protecting himself."
Marcus looked down.
Claire closed her eyes.
Like she had heard those words before.
"What did he do?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Your father knew Elena was in danger."
My chest tightened.
"He knew?"
"Yes."
"And he did nothing?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
My hands tightened around the wheelchair controls.
"Tell me."
Adrian looked toward the rain-covered windows.
"Your mother discovered something about your father's organization."
"What?"
"A hidden account."
I frowned.
"Money?"
"Not just money."
He looked at me.
"Names."
I felt the room shift.
Names.
In my world, names were power.
Names could destroy companies.
End careers.
Start wars.
"Whose names?"
"People your father worked with."
I waited.
"And people he was planning to betray."
That caught my attention.
"My father betrayed his own people?"
Adrian nodded.
"Your father wanted to leave the old world behind."
I almost laughed.
"My father?"
"Yes."
The idea sounded impossible.
Thomas Hale had built an empire through fear.
Leaving it behind made no sense.
"Why?"
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"Because of you."
I froze.
"What does that mean?"
"He knew the life he created would eventually come for you."
The words settled slowly.
My father.
The man who taught me never to trust anyone.
The man who prepared me to inherit everything.
Had actually wanted to protect me from it.
But then why hide everything?
Why lie about my mother?
Why let me spend sixteen years believing she was gone?
"Where is the letter?"
Marcus handed me the envelope.
This time, nobody stopped me.
I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Old.
Folded.
My father's handwriting.
I stared at the first line.
My hands went still.
Because the letter did not begin with my name.
It began with hers.
Elena.
My son will hate me when he learns the truth.
I read the sentence again.
My son will hate me when he learns the truth.
For a moment, I couldn't continue.
Because my father knew.
He knew exactly what I would feel.
I forced myself to read.
Rowan,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
I stopped.
My father did not apologize.
Not in life.
Not once.
But here...
On paper...
He sounded different.
I continued.
I spent years believing power was the only thing that could keep us safe.
I was wrong.
Power only creates more people who want what you have.
Your mother understood that before I did.
She wanted to take you away from this world.
She wanted you to have a normal life.
I looked up.
The words blurred slightly.
Normal.
That was something I had never had.
I continued.
But when Elena found the truth about my partners, they came after her.
I tried to stop them.
I was too late.
My breathing slowed.
"She was killed."
I said it quietly.
Adrian looked away.
"No."
I looked at him.
"What?"
My eyes returned to the letter.
The truth is worse than her death.
My hand tightened.
Elena was not killed that night.
She escaped.
I stopped.
The lobby disappeared.
Everything disappeared.
My mother.
Alive.
The word felt impossible.
I looked at Adrian.
"What does this mean?"
Nobody answered.
I looked back at the letter.
I searched for the next sentence.
But there was nothing.
The rest of the page had been torn away.
Only half a letter.
Half a truth.
Half of my life missing.
"Where is the rest?"
Adrian spoke quietly.
"Your father destroyed it."
"Why?"
"Because the rest explained where Elena went."
My eyes lifted.
"Where?"
Adrian looked toward Lily.
And that was when I noticed something.
The way Lily looked at him.
Not like a stranger.
Not like a dangerous man.
Like someone she trusted.
My stomach tightened.
The message on my phone returned to my mind.
Ask him who Lily's real father is.
I turned toward Adrian.
"Who is Lily?"
Sarah immediately stepped forward.
"Mr. Hale—"
I stopped her.
My eyes stayed on Adrian.
"Answer me."
The old man didn't move.
For the first time that night...
He looked afraid.
"Adrian."
His silence told me everything.
I looked at Lily.
The little girl who walked into my birthday dinner.
The little girl who gave me a flower.
The little girl who somehow appeared at the center of my family's oldest secrets.
"Is she connected to Elena?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The pain.
The answer.
"Yes."
The word was barely audible.
Sarah looked confused.
Lily looked at everyone.
I felt something break inside the carefully controlled world I had built.
"How?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Because Lily is the reason Elena survived."
I stared at him.
"What are you saying?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire whispered:
"Rowan..."
I turned.
Her face was pale.
"Your mother didn't disappear alone."
The hallway seemed colder.
"She was protecting someone."
My voice became a whisper.
"Who?"
Claire looked at Lily.
And the little girl suddenly grabbed Adrian's hand.
Then Claire said the words that changed everything.
"She was protecting her daughter."
I looked at Lily.
My mind refused to accept it.
A child.
A secret.
My mother's daughter.
But not me.
Impossible.
Unless...
Unless there was another truth my father had buried.
Another truth everyone had spent sixteen years hiding.
Adrian took one step forward.
"Rowan, before you ask..."
I looked at him.
"Ask what?"
His eyes filled with regret.
"The question you're about to ask will change the way you see your entire family."
My phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
A new message.
This time, it was from my own security system.
The screen showed one alert.
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS: HALE FAMILY ARCHIVES.
Then another notification appeared.
A live camera feed opened automatically.
A person was standing inside my private archive room.
May you like
Holding my father's original records.
And when the camera focused on his face, I saw exactly who had broken in.
