Chapter 7 - The Door Behind the Library

Lorenzo canceled the foundation dinner.
At least publicly.
Privately, he did something smarter.
He announced that the event would continue at another property.
Most guests received the new location.
Alexander Vale received the old one.
“He'll know it's a trap,” I said.
Lorenzo adjusted his cuff.
“Good.”
“You want him to know?”
“I want him to make a choice.”
Elena watched from across the study.
“You're assuming he'll come.”
“He's spent six years making sure everyone behaves exactly as he expects.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“Men like that eventually need to see the result.”
The girls were moved to a secure section of the estate with Clara and two nurses.
I stayed with them until Lily fell asleep.
Sophie didn't.
She sat beside me holding Leo.
“Anna?”
It still startled me every time she spoke.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Is Mommy staying?”
I looked toward Elena.
She was standing outside the room.
“I think that's something your mommy and daddy need to decide.”
Sophie frowned.
“Do you like Daddy?”
I nearly fell off the chair.
Children.
“I work for your daddy.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Apparently seven months of silence had stored up considerable conversational ammunition.
I smiled.
“Your daddy loves you very much.”
Sophie accepted the strategic retreat.
At nine, Marco called.
Alexander Vale had arrived.
Alone.
He entered the mansion as though nothing unusual had happened.
Lorenzo met him in the library.
I watched from the security room with Elena and Marco.
Alexander was seventy.
Elegant.
Calm.
He carried a walking cane he did not seem to need.
“Lorenzo,” he said warmly. “Where is everyone?”
“Gone.”
Alexander smiled.
“So the dinner is canceled.”
“For you.”
The older man studied him.
“Interesting.”
Lorenzo placed Dominic’s photograph on the table.
Alexander looked at it.
No reaction.
Then Lorenzo placed the photograph of Elena.
Alexander's eyes changed.
Only slightly.
Enough.
“You knew she was alive.”
Alexander sighed.
“So this is what tonight is about.”
“You wore Dominic's ring.”
“Did I?”
“You entered my house.”
“I've entered your house hundreds of times.”
“You threatened my daughter.”
Alexander's smile disappeared.
“Careful.”
Lorenzo did not move.
“That's the first honest expression you've shown me.”
Alexander stood.
“I loved your father.”
“No. You loved what he owned.”
“Your father trusted me.”
“And left the company to me.”
There it was.
Something cold entered Alexander's eyes.
Elena whispered beside me:
“That's why.”
But I wasn't convinced.
Money explained resentment.
Not six years of obsession.
Alexander walked toward the bookshelves.
“You were always the chosen son.”
Lorenzo watched him.
“Dominic was older.”
“Yes.”
“Yet your father chose you.”
“He had reasons.”
“He had guilt.”
Lorenzo frowned.
Alexander smiled.
“He never told you.”
“Told me what?”
Alexander touched one book.
A mechanism clicked.
Part of the library wall opened.
I stared at the monitor.
Another hidden door.
Marco swore under his breath.
Alexander stepped toward it.
Lorenzo followed.
The security feed inside the passage flickered.
Then died.
“We're going,” Marco said.
We ran.
The hidden passage led downward.
By the time we reached the library, both men were gone.
Marco opened the concealed door.
Stone stairs descended.
Elena grabbed my arm.
“I know this passage.”
“You've been here?”
“Once.”
“When?”
“The night I disappeared.”
We followed.
At the bottom was a small archive.
Lorenzo stood beside a desk.
Alexander faced him.
Between them lay an old document.
Lorenzo looked toward us.
“Stay back.”
Alexander laughed.
“Still protecting everyone.”
He looked at Elena.
“You were always the inconvenient one.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You destroyed our family.”
“No.”
Alexander tapped the document.
“His father did that.”
Lorenzo looked down.
It was a birth certificate.
His.
Another document sat beneath it.
A letter.
Alexander said:
“Read it.”
Lorenzo did.
His expression slowly changed.
His father had written the letter thirty-nine years earlier.
It revealed that Alexander was Lorenzo's biological father.
Nobody spoke.
Alexander smiled without warmth.
“Your mother and I had an affair.”
Lorenzo stared at him.
“My father knew?”
“He discovered it after you were born.”
“And raised me anyway.”
“Yes.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“He raised my son. Gave you his name. His fortune. His empire.”
“You're saying you did all this because he raised me?”
“I'm saying everything that should have been mine went to a child carrying another man's name.”
Lorenzo looked almost disgusted.
“I was never yours.”
Alexander's face tightened.
“I tried to make you understand.”
“By destroying my wife?”
“She discovered too much.”
“By frightening Sophie?”
“I never intended to harm the girl.”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“You entered her room.”
“To retrieve documents.”
“You threatened a five-year-old child.”
“She saw me.”
“So you told her I would die if she spoke.”
Alexander said nothing.
That silence was confession enough.
Marco quietly activated the recorder in his pocket.
Alexander noticed.
He smiled.
“You think that matters?”
“Yes,” Lorenzo said.
“Why?”
“Because you still think this is thirty years ago.”
Sirens sounded faintly outside.
Alexander's expression changed.
Lorenzo had never intended violence.
He had intended evidence.
Police officers entered minutes later.
Alexander did not resist.
But before they took him away, he looked at Lorenzo.
“You still don't know everything.”
Lorenzo said nothing.
Alexander smiled.
“Ask Elena why she really came back eight months ago.”
Elena went pale.
Lorenzo slowly turned toward her.
Alexander was escorted away.
The archive became silent.
“Elena?”
She looked at him.
“There’s something I didn't tell you.”
“What?”
She reached inside her coat.
A sealed medical envelope appeared.
“Sophie’s original diagnosis was wrong.”
Lorenzo stared at her.
“What are you saying?”
“I came back because another doctor reviewed her records.”
“And?”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“The condition they were treating her for…”
May you like
She handed him the envelope.
“…she never had it.”
