Chapter 4 - The Empty Elevator

Adrian did not remember descending the warehouse stairs.

One second he was outside Victor’s office.

The next he was in the SUV.

“Call Elena.”

Luca already had.

“No answer.”

“Security?”

Marco spoke into his radio.

“Penthouse team, respond.”

Static.

Then a voice.

“Bellini, we have a breach.”

Adrian’s hands curled into fists.

“What kind?”

“Cameras went dark for ninety-three seconds. Service elevator opened on forty-eight. Child disappeared during that window.”

“Lock every exit.”

“Already done.”

“Then she’s inside.”

A pause.

“We're searching.”

Adrian looked toward the warehouse.

Victor was still inside.

“Marco, stay on him.”

“You're going back alone?”

“Luca comes with me.”

Marco understood.

If Victor was responsible, Adrian wanted him to believe the warehouse meeting remained undiscovered.

The brothers drove back toward Manhattan.

Adrian called Elena again.

This time she answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“I can't find her.”

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

“I was putting laundry away. She was coloring in the staff room. I left for maybe two minutes.”

“And?”

“When I came back, the elevator was open.”

“Did she enter willingly?”

“I don't know.”

“Any sound?”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“Yes?”

“We're getting her back.”

Silence.

Then Elena said something Adrian would remember for the rest of his life.

“She trusted this house because I told her you would never let anything happen to us.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I won't.”

He ended the call.

Luca drove faster.

“You think Victor took her?”

“No.”

“No?”

“He was at the warehouse.”

“Could have ordered it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why take Sofia?”

“To control Elena. Or me.”

Luca gripped the wheel.

“Or because she heard something.”

Adrian looked out at the city.

Three years of insomnia had made him angry.

But this was different.

This was clarity.

They reached the tower.

Security had sealed the building.

Elena stood barefoot in the lobby, still wearing her housekeeping uniform.

Adrian crossed directly to her.

“Any contact?”

She shook her head.

He crouched.

On the polished floor beside the elevator was Sofia’s teddy bear.

Adrian picked it up.

The pink ribbon had been torn.

Beneath it was another black fiber.

He examined the elevator.

“Which direction?”

“Down,” security said.

“Stops?”

“Forty-eight, forty-two, thirty, lobby, garage.”

“Search all.”

“We are.”

Adrian entered the security room.

The camera footage showed Sofia coloring.

Elena left.

Thirty-seven seconds later, a man wearing a maintenance uniform appeared.

His face was hidden beneath a cap.

He crouched.

Sofia looked up.

He said something.

She smiled.

Then took his hand.

Adrian replayed it.

“She knew him.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“No.”

“Not necessarily well.”

Adrian enlarged the image.

The man wore gloves.

But beneath the sleeve was a watch.

Black face.

Silver bezel.

Luca leaned closer.

“I've seen that.”

“So have I.”

Their cousin Daniel Moretti wore one exactly like it.

Daniel managed building operations.

And had access to every service elevator.

Adrian called him.

No answer.

“Find Daniel.”

Security searched.

His office was empty.

His car remained in the garage.

Adrian stared at the floor plans.

“If he wanted to remove her without cameras, where?”

Marco called.

“Victor just left the warehouse.”

“Follow him.”

“Already moving.”

“Where?”

“Manhattan.”

Adrian looked at Luca.

Victor was coming back.

Why?

A guard rushed into the room.

“We found something on forty-two.”

They took the stairs.

A pink shoe lay outside a utility corridor.

Elena grabbed it.

“Sofia’s.”

Adrian pushed through the door.

The corridor was empty.

At the end stood an electrical room.

Locked.

Adrian kicked it open.

Nobody.

But a child’s drawing lay on the floor.

Adrian picked it up.

Three figures.

A small girl.

A woman.

And a very tall man covered in scribbled tattoos.

Above them was a yellow circle.

Sun.

On the reverse side, someone had written numbers.

4-8-2-1.

“Is that Sofia’s writing?” Luca asked.

“She can't write numbers like this,” Elena said.

Adrian looked at the corridor doors.

Room 4821.

The tower had no apartment 4821.

But parking spaces did.

“Garage.”

They ran.

Space 4821 belonged to a storage cage used by building maintenance.

The padlock was open.

Adrian pulled the door.

Inside were boxes.

Tools.

A child’s pink bow.

Elena gasped.

Adrian found a second door at the back.

It opened into an old service passage left from the tower’s original construction.

Luca stared.

“Where does that go?”

Adrian knew.

“Adjacent building.”

They followed it.

Halfway through, Adrian heard something.

A tiny voice.

Singing.

Elena pushed past him.

“Sofia!”

The singing stopped.

“Mommy?”

Elena ran.

They found Sofia sitting inside an unlocked maintenance office with crayons, juice, and cookies.

Alone.

Elena dropped to her knees and pulled her daughter against her.

Adrian scanned the room.

No attacker.

No restraints.

No obvious threat.

Someone had brought Sofia there and simply left her.

Sofia smiled at Adrian.

“Mr. Moretti!”

Adrian crouched.

“Who brought you here?”

“Uncle Danny.”

Daniel.

Luca swore.

“Where did he go?”

Sofia pointed toward another door.

“He said wait.”

Adrian opened it.

Empty alley.

Daniel had escaped.

Elena kissed Sofia’s face repeatedly.

“Why did you go with him?”

“He said Mr. Moretti needed my teddy.”

Adrian looked at the bear in his hand.

A distraction.

Daniel wanted them focused on Sofia.

But why leave her unharmed?

His phone rang.

Marco.

“Victor returned to the penthouse.”

“Keep him there.”

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“The warehouse was cleared immediately after he left.”

Adrian looked at Luca.

“They knew we were there.”

“How?”

Adrian thought about the sequence.

The warehouse.

Sofia disappearing.

Victor returning.

Someone was coordinating both.

Maybe Victor wasn't the top.

Maybe he was afraid too.

Sofia tugged Adrian’s sleeve.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“Yes?”

“Uncle Danny said Grandma knows.”

Adrian stopped.

“My grandmother?”

Sofia shook her head.

“His grandma.”

Daniel’s grandmother was also Adrian’s.

Isabella Moretti.

Ninety years old.

Widowed.

Living quietly at the Moretti estate outside the city.

She had not attended a family meeting in five years.

Adrian stood.

“Luca.”

“I know.”

They drove north before dawn.

Isabella’s estate appeared behind iron gates at 4:32 a.m.

The front door was open.

That was wrong.

Adrian entered first.

“Nonna?”

No answer.

They found her sitting in the library.

Alive.

Awake.

Waiting.

A leather folder rested on her lap.

She looked at Adrian and sighed.

“You finally slept.”

Adrian stopped.

“How did you know?”

Isabella held out the folder.

“Because three years ago, your father discovered what they were planning.”

“My father died four years ago.”

“I know.”

She opened the folder.

Inside was a medical report bearing Adrian’s name.

Dated six months before his insomnia began.

Adrian reached for it.

Isabella pulled it back.

“Before you read this, understand something.”

“What?”

“Victor didn't start this.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Then who did?”

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Isabella’s eyes widened.

May you like

The library door began to open.

And someone Adrian trusted walked inside.
