Chapter 7 - The Maid Who Saw Too Much

Adrian reached the estate in eleven minutes.

Emma was safe.

Clara was not.

Her bedroom window stood open.

A chair had overturned.

On the floor was a black dot.

Dominic had taken her.

Emma sat wrapped in Sophia's coat.

“He said Mommy had to help him find Daddy's box.”

Adrian crouched.

“What box?”

Emma sniffed.

“The one Mommy said never to open.”

“Do you know where it is?”

Emma nodded.

Everyone became still.

She led Adrian to the laundry room.

Behind a shelf was a child's old wooden toy chest.

Clara had hidden it in plain sight.

Inside were Thomas Hale's belongings.

A watch.

A wedding ring.

Photographs.

And seventeen cassette tapes.

Daniel found a recorder.

Thomas's voice filled the room.

“If Clara is hearing this, I failed.”

Emma looked at her mother’s photograph.

Adrian sent her upstairs with Sophia before continuing.

Thomas described the archive.

Richard Marlowe had secretly documented every crime committed by Halcyon.

Names.

Accounts.

Politicians.

Police officers.

Businessmen.

Judges.

Dominic had spent twenty years searching for it.

Thomas had hidden the access key.

“Where?” Adrian murmured.

The tape answered.

“Where no criminal would think to look.”

A pause.

“With my daughter.”

Clara.

Not Emma.

Thomas had sewn the key into Clara's old housekeeping uniform.

Adrian remembered Clara wearing the same style for years.

Dominic knew.

That was why he took her.

They traced Clara's phone.

The signal ended at the abandoned Marlowe textile mill.

Adrian prepared to leave.

Sophia blocked him.

“You keep going alone.”

“This is my problem.”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“It became mine when Dominic used my brother. It became Clara's when he killed Thomas. It became Emma's when she looked under that table.”

She stepped closer.

“You don't protect people by deciding they aren't allowed to stand beside you.”

Adrian stared at her.

It was exactly the mistake his father had made.

Secrets disguised as protection.

He touched Sophia's cheek.

“If we survive this, no more secrets.”

“If?”

He almost smiled.

“When.”

They reached the mill after midnight.

Clara sat tied to a chair.

Dominic stood behind her.

Adrian saw his uncle for the first time in twenty years.

Older.

Thinner.

Alive.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Dominic smiled.

“You have your mother's eyes.”

“Let Clara go.”

“Bring me Luca.”

“No.”

Dominic sighed.

“You always were stubborn.”

“You don't know me.”

“I watched you grow up.”

That landed harder than Adrian expected.

Dominic had been present invisibly.

Every success.

Every mistake.

Every death.

“Victor made sure you became exactly what we needed,” Dominic said.

“Victor betrayed you.”

“No.”

Dominic smiled.

“Victor betrayed everyone.”

Adrian heard movement above.

Daniel's team was positioning.

Dominic noticed Adrian glance upward.

“Don't.”

A red laser appeared on Clara's chest.

Adrian stopped.

“What do you want?”

“The key.”

“I don't have it.”

“She does.”

Dominic cut the shoulder seam of Clara's uniform.

Nothing.

His expression changed.

Clara laughed.

“You're twenty years too late.”

Dominic struck her.

Adrian stepped forward.

The laser moved to his chest.

“Where is it?” Dominic demanded.

Clara smiled through blood.

“I burned the uniform.”

Dominic's composure vanished.

“Liar.”

“Thomas taught me better than that.”

Dominic raised his gun.

A child's voice suddenly echoed from the mill entrance.

“Mommy!”

Everyone turned.

Emma stood there.

Sophia behind her, horrified.

Emma had slipped away from the car.

Clara screamed.

“Run!”

Dominic looked at Emma.

Then at Clara.

Understanding entered his face.

“The daughter.”

Clara's terror confirmed it.

Dominic smiled.

“Thomas didn't hide the key with you.”

May you like

He turned toward Emma.

“He hid it with her.”
