Chapter 7 - The Family They Stole

Vincent stared at Anna as if she had spoken in a language he no longer understood.

"I don't have a brother."

Elena began crying.

"Yes, you do."

Vincent turned toward her.

For thirty years, his life had been a collection of facts nobody had allowed him to question.

His mother died when he was nine.

His uncle died before he was born.

Evelyn Hart died in a fire.

Nico Bellini died fourteen years ago.

And now another grave had opened.

"My father told me the baby died."

Elena nodded.

"Because I told him that."

Vincent looked at her in disbelief.

"You lied to him too?"

"I had to."

"Stop saying that."

Elena flinched.

Vincent lowered his voice only because Lucy was nearby.

"Everyone keeps telling me they had to lie. You had to disappear. My father had to hide things. Nico had to die. Anna had to send her daughter into my home in the middle of the night."

He looked around.

"Did anybody in this family ever try telling the truth?"

Nobody answered.

Lucy walked slowly toward him.

She didn't understand the details.

She understood anger.

Vincent immediately softened his voice.

"Hey."

"Are you mad at me?"

The question hit him harder than Anthony's metal strike.

Vincent crouched.

"No."

"Because my daddy is your brother?"

He swallowed.

"No."

"Then you're my uncle?"

Vincent looked at Anna.

She nodded.

He looked back at Lucy.

"Yeah."

The little girl considered this seriously.

Then she wrapped her arms around his neck.

"That's good."

Vincent closed his eyes.

"Why?"

"Because I wanted an uncle."

A laugh escaped him before he could stop it.

It was broken and exhausted, but real.

He held her.

For the first time since 2:13 that morning, the mystery standing in his penthouse became something else.

Family.

Anna approached carefully.

"Michael is alive."

Vincent stood.

"Where?"

"We don't know."

"How can you have a child with him and not know?"

Anna's expression tightened.

"Because I didn't know his real name when we met."

Vincent waited.

"He called himself Michael Hartwell. He worked with me during my investigation. We were together three years."

"And then?"

"He disappeared before Lucy was born."

"You thought he abandoned you."

"At first."

Anna looked toward Elena.

"Later I learned Meridian had taken him."

Vincent's anger returned.

"Why?"

Elena answered.

"Because Anthony discovered who he was."

Vincent looked at his mother.

"Start at the beginning."

So she did.

After Elena survived the attempted assassination, she learned she was pregnant.

Salvatore never knew.

Meridian watched him constantly.

Elena feared Anthony would use another child against Salvatore exactly as he had used Vincent.

So Michael was born in hiding.

Raised under different names.

Moved between trusted families.

Evelyn helped protect him until her murder.

Years later, Michael learned who he was.

And unlike Vincent, he chose not to enter the Moretti world.

He became a financial investigator.

That was how he met Anna.

Neither initially knew the other was connected to Evelyn and Elena.

"That's impossible," Vincent said.

Elena gave a sad smile.

"Sometimes secrets become so complicated they hide even from the people carrying them."

Anna wiped tears away.

"When Michael discovered my connection to Evelyn, he started investigating Meridian with me."

"And Anthony found him."

"Yes."

"When?"

"Six years ago."

Vincent looked at Lucy.

She was five.

Anna understood.

"He came back once."

"When?"

"About six years ago, briefly. He was terrified. He said Meridian had people watching him. He disappeared again before I knew I was pregnant."

"Did he know about Lucy?"

Anna's voice broke.

"I don't know."

Vincent looked away.

Another Moretti man had lost years with his child because somebody else controlled the truth.

The pattern disgusted him.

Kane approached.

"Anthony's being transported."

"Can you hold him?"

"For tonight."

Vincent turned.

"For tonight?"

"Half the evidence against him is compromised by corrupt officials."

"So fix it."

"We are."

"No. You're processing him."

Kane's eyes narrowed.

"There's a difference?"

"Yes. Processing him gives Meridian time to call every judge they own."

Kane couldn't deny it.

Anna held up Lucy's strip of fabric.

"This can fix it."

They returned to the estate.

Inside an underground room Elena had used for decades, Anna entered the stitched numbers into the archive.

Files unlocked across secure servers.

Not one dump.

Hundreds of targeted packages.

Each contained evidence independently verifiable.

Wire transfers.

Audio recordings.

Signed documents.

Photographs.

Location data.

Murder orders.

Bribes.

One package alone could destroy Anthony.

All together, they could dismantle Meridian.

Kane stared at the screen.

"This is enough."

Anna shook her head.

"Not yet."

"What else?"

"We distribute simultaneously."

"To whom?"

"Federal prosecutors in three jurisdictions. Five newspapers. Two international outlets. Inspector general offices. Private attorneys."

Vincent understood.

"So nobody can bury all of it."

"Exactly."

Kane nodded.

"Do it."

Anna hesitated.

"Once we send this, people will retaliate."

Vincent looked toward Lucy sleeping on a couch in the next room.

"Then we make sure they can't reach the people they want."

He turned to Luca.

"Move every legitimate employee and family member who could be targeted."

"Already started."

Vincent looked surprised.

Luca shrugged.

"I know you."

Apparently someone did.

Anna initiated the release.

Progress bars moved across the screen.

10%.

23%.

41%.

Then stopped.

ERROR.

Nico, his shoulder bandaged, leaned over the terminal.

"They cut the uplink."

"Meridian?" Kane asked.

"No."

"Then who?"

Nico's expression darkened.

"Someone inside this building."

Every person went still.

The estate had been secured.

Anthony's men arrested or gone.

Only trusted people remained.

Vincent looked toward the hallway.

"How many entrances?"

Elena answered, "Two."

"Who knows about the lower tunnel?"

"Me. Nico. Anna."

Daniel cleared his throat.

"And Evelyn."

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked confused by his own thought.

"But Evelyn is dead."

Vincent's phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A text.

DO NOT SEND THE FILES.

Then another.

IF YOU WANT MICHAEL ALIVE.

Vincent stared.

Anna rushed toward him.

"What?"

He showed her.

Her knees nearly gave way.

"Michael?"

A photograph arrived.

A man sat in a chair holding today's newspaper.

Older than Vincent remembered from the only childhood photograph Elena later showed him.

Dark hair threaded with gray.

Bruised.

Alive.

Michael Moretti.

Lucy woke from the voices.

She wandered toward them.

"What happened?"

Anna quickly lowered the phone.

But Lucy saw the photograph.

She froze.

Then whispered one word.

"Daddy."

Vincent looked at her.

"You recognize him?"

Lucy nodded.

"He came to my window."

Anna stared.

"When?"

"The night before the bad men came."

"What did he say?"

Lucy hugged the rabbit.

"He said he couldn't come inside."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"He said it was a secret."

Vincent crouched.

"What else did your dad say?"

Lucy thought carefully.

"He said if Mommy ever got in trouble, I should find you."

Vincent felt the full circle close.

Michael had sent her.

Not Elena.

Not Anna.

Michael.

"Did he tell you where he was going?"

Lucy shook her head.

Then paused.

"He gave Bunny something."

Vincent took the stuffed rabbit again.

They had searched it.

Twice.

But Lucy reached for the rabbit's plastic eye.

She twisted it.

The eye came loose.

Inside was a tiny rolled photograph.

Vincent unfolded it.

An old warehouse stood beside railroad tracks.

On the back, Michael had written:

WHERE OUR FATHER MADE HIS FIRST DEAL.

Vincent knew the place.

His father's original warehouse on South Morgan Street.

Abandoned for twenty years.

Kane reached for her radio.

Vincent stopped her.

"No tactical convoy."

"Vincent—"

"They'll kill him."

Anna looked at him.

"Then what do we do?"

Vincent stared at Michael's photograph.

"We make Anthony believe he won."

Thirty minutes later, Vincent walked into the federal holding room where Anthony sat cuffed to a table.

Anthony smiled.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Vincent placed the microSD fragments down.

"You want the archive stopped?"

Anthony's eyes gleamed.

"What do you want?"

"My brother."

Anthony leaned backward.

"So you finally know."

"Where is Michael?"

"You really believe I'm still the one controlling this?"

Vincent stared.

Anthony laughed quietly.

"Oh, nephew."

The amusement disappeared from his eyes.

"Meridian stopped belonging to me years ago."

Vincent felt a warning crawl up his spine.

"Who controls it?"

Anthony leaned forward.

"Michael."

Vincent didn't move.

Anthony smiled.

"You weren't going to rescue your brother."

A door clicked open behind Vincent.

Footsteps entered.

Anthony's smile widened.

May you like

"Your brother was waiting for you."

And a familiar voice said, "Hello, Vincent."
