Chapter 4 - The Man Inside the House

Dante did not bring Lily.

He brought war.

Within six minutes, every Moretti guard had been moved into sealed sectors.

No one entered or exited.

The medical wing had been breached through an old maintenance shaft that did not appear on modern architectural plans.

Again, someone knew the estate better than Dante did.

Elena’s room was empty.

The monitors had been disconnected carefully.

There was no sign of a struggle.

Whoever took her had wanted her alive.

Dr. Conti had suffered a deep cut across his shoulder but survived.

When he woke, he remembered only a masked man and the smell of expensive cigar smoke.

Anthony Vieri smoked the same imported cigars every day.

Dante stood beside Elena’s empty bed.

Marco entered.

“We found a second message.”

“Where?”

“Security room.”

The monitor showed a prerecorded video.

Anthony sat in darkness.

No mask.

No fear.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Dante,” he said, “you always believed your father left you an empire. He left you a laboratory.”

Dante’s expression did not change.

Anthony continued.

“Bring Lily to Pier 17 at sunrise. Bring Rafael’s files. Come alone. If you don’t, Elena dies.”

The screen went black.

Marco waited.

“We’re not giving him the girl.”

“No.”

“We’re also not letting you go alone.”

Dante looked at him.

“I know.”

Marco almost looked surprised.

Dante had changed since midnight.

Hours earlier, he might have walked into Pier 17 alone because pride demanded it.

Now a child was asleep upstairs.

A child who might be his.

Pride was suddenly much less important than returning alive.

The paternity results arrived at four twelve.

Dr. Conti’s assistant handed Dante a sealed folder.

Probability of biological paternity: 99.997%.

Dante read the line once.

Then again.

He sat down.

Lily Moretti.

His daughter.

Not by choice.

Not through love.

Not through anything decent.

Yet none of that changed what she was.

A child.

His child.

Marco read the report.

“Dante…”

“Don’t.”

Marco nodded.

Dante folded the page carefully.

“What are you going to do?”

Dante looked through the glass wall toward Lily.

She slept curled around the rabbit.

“First?”

He slipped the result into his pocket.

“I’m bringing her mother home.”

They formed a plan.

Anthony expected Dante to arrive with Lily and the flash drive.

He would get neither.

Marco’s team would surround Pier 17 from three directions.

A second team would enter through the river access.

Dante would approach openly.

The flash drive he carried would be a copy.

Lily remained under guard at the estate.

Before Dante left, she woke.

“Where are you going?”

He paused.

“To get your mommy.”

“I want to come.”

“No.”

Her face tightened.

Three-year-old defiance.

“Mommy is mine.”

The words almost broke him.

“I know.”

“She needs me.”

“She needs you safe.”

Lily considered that.

“Will you bring her back?”

Dante had made promises that resulted in deaths.

He rarely made them anymore.

But Lily waited.

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

He crouched.

“Promise.”

She held out her smallest finger.

Dante stared.

“What?”

“Pinky promise.”

Marco coughed to hide a laugh.

Dante hooked his finger around hers.

“Pinky promise.”

At five forty-five, Dante reached Pier 17.

The warehouse had been abandoned for years.

Same building.

Same rusted beams.

Same concrete floor.

The last place Rafael had breathed.

Anthony waited beneath a hanging industrial lamp.

Elena sat in a chair nearby.

Her wrists were tied.

She was awake but weak.

When she saw Dante, fear crossed her face.

“Where’s Lily?”

“Safe.”

Anthony smiled.

“You were told to bring her.”

“I’ve never been good with instructions.”

Anthony held a gun against Elena’s shoulder.

“Files.”

Dante raised the flash drive.

“Let her go.”

Anthony laughed.

“You think this is a negotiation?”

“I think you need what I have.”

“I need two things. The files and the girl.”

“You’re getting neither.”

Elena whispered, “Dante, don’t.”

Anthony struck her.

Dante’s entire body tightened.

“Do that again.”

Anthony smiled.

“There he is.”

“Do it again and find out what happens.”

“Your father used to make the same face.”

“My father was a monster.”

Anthony’s smile faded.

“He was a visionary.”

“He trafficked in children who hadn’t even been born.”

“He protected bloodlines.”

“He manufactured hostages.”

Anthony shrugged.

“History belongs to whoever survives.”

Dante looked at Elena.

“Did he hurt you?”

“I’m okay.”

Anthony pressed the gun harder.

“Enough.”

He extended his free hand.

“The drive.”

Dante tossed it.

Anthony caught it.

“Now Lily.”

“No.”

Anthony’s eyes hardened.

“I can kill Elena.”

“No, you can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because she knows where Rafael’s ledger is.”

Anthony stopped.

There.

Confirmation.

He did not know.

Dante had guessed correctly.

The ledger mattered more than the drive.

“You never found it,” Dante said.

Anthony said nothing.

“That’s why you kept Elena alive.”

Anthony’s jaw tightened.

“And that’s why Rafael died. You thought he had it.”

“He should have told me.”

“You murdered him.”

“He betrayed your father’s legacy.”

“You murdered my brother.”

Anthony’s voice sharpened.

“Your brother was weak.”

Dante took one slow step forward.

Anthony aimed at his chest.

“Stop.”

Dante stopped.

“You know what Rafael’s final mistake was?” Anthony asked.

Dante waited.

“He believed you could be different.”

A distant metallic sound echoed through the warehouse.

Marco’s team.

Anthony heard it.

His eyes shifted.

Dante moved.

The gun fired.

Elena screamed.

Dante slammed Anthony against a steel column.

The weapon skidded across the floor.

They fought brutally.

Anthony was older but strong.

Dante drove him backward.

Anthony struck Dante’s injured shoulder.

Pain exploded.

Then Marco’s men entered.

Anthony ripped a knife from his belt and grabbed Elena.

“Back!”

Everyone froze.

The knife pressed against her throat.

Dante lifted his hands.

“You’re surrounded.”

“I only need one exit.”

“You don’t have one.”

Anthony smiled.

“Yes, I do.”

He looked upward.

An explosive charge had been attached to the ceiling supports.

Dante saw the wires.

Anthony had prepared to destroy Pier 17.

“You kill me,” Anthony said, “this whole building comes down.”

Marco spoke into his radio.

“Bomb team.”

“No time.”

Anthony backed toward a side door with Elena.

Dante followed.

“Let her go.”

“Bring me Lily.”

“No.”

“Then Elena dies.”

Elena’s eyes met Dante’s.

She shook her head.

Do not do it.

Dante understood.

Anthony moved closer to the door.

Then Elena stomped hard on his foot.

Anthony jerked.

Dante fired.

The bullet struck Anthony’s shoulder.

Elena dropped.

Marco’s men seized Anthony.

The knife fell.

For the first time since midnight, Dante could breathe.

He rushed toward Elena.

“Are you hurt?”

She looked at him.

Then started crying.

“Lily?”

“Safe.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Thank God.”

Dante helped her stand.

“We need to move.”

Bomb technicians entered.

Anthony laughed from the floor.

“You still don’t understand.”

Dante looked at him.

Anthony’s face was bloody.

“You think I’m the end of this?”

Dante said nothing.

Anthony smiled.

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

“From the person Rafael trusted most.”

Dante’s expression changed.

Anthony leaned closer.

“The ledger wasn’t hidden from me.”

He laughed again.

“It was hidden from Marco.”

Dante turned.

May you like

Marco stood twenty feet away.

And slowly reached inside his jacket.
