Chapter 6 - The Seven Words

They found Adrian at an abandoned marina.
He was alone.
Damian put the ledger on a table.
"Talk."
Adrian looked destroyed.
"Victor had Ethan."
"We know."
"No. You don't understand. He's had leverage on me for years."
Claire stepped forward.
"What happened the night I left?"
Adrian looked at her.
"I changed your phone."
"What?"
"After Damian broke yours, I gave you another."
Claire remembered.
A cheap prepaid phone had been waiting in the car that took her away.
She had assumed Damian arranged it.
"You sent the messages?"
Adrian nodded.
Damian's face darkened.
"What messages?"
Claire looked at him.
"You don't know?"
"No."
She swallowed.
The first message had arrived twenty minutes after she left.
DAMIAN DOES NOT WANT TO SEE YOU.
Then another.
IF YOU RETURN, YOU PUT YOURSELF AND THE CHILD AT RISK.
Damian stared.
"The child?"
Claire nodded.
"That's how I knew someone in your circle knew."
Damian turned toward Adrian.
"You told her I knew?"
"Victor ordered me."
"Why?"
"He said if Claire came back, she'd die."
"From whom?"
"From Victor."
Silence.
Adrian continued.
"He told me he had men watching the house. If Claire returned or contacted you, he would kill her."
Claire felt sick.
"So you frightened me into disappearing."
"I thought I was saving you."
"And you never told Damian."
"I couldn't."
"You had four years."
"Victor had photographs of Ethan every month."
Damian's anger changed.
He understood fear used through a child now.
"What about my seven words?" he asked.
Adrian looked confused.
"What?"
"Never contact me again."
Claire stared at Damian.
He looked at her.
"I said them."
"Yes."
"But I didn't mean forever."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"Interesting distinction."
"I was furious."
"You told your pregnant wife she no longer existed."
"I didn't know you were pregnant."
"You shouldn't have needed a pregnancy to treat me like a human being."
Damian lowered his head.
"You're right."
Claire hadn't expected that.
He continued.
"I thought you betrayed me. I wanted to hurt you."
The admission was ugly.
And necessary.
"So I did."
Claire's eyes burned.
"Yes."
"I can't explain it away."
"No."
"I can't blame Victor for the words."
"No."
"I said them."
"Yes."
Damian met her eyes.
"And I will regret them until I die."
For the first time, Claire believed him.
Not because he begged.
Because he didn't.
Adrian told them the rest.
Victor had spent four years rebuilding his network.
He planned to use the ledger to blackmail officials and restore control over the criminal businesses Damian had dismantled.
Ethan was being held at an old warehouse near the harbor.
Victor wanted an exchange.
The ledger for the boy.
Damian called Helen.
No secret attack.
No private revenge.
Police would handle it.
Claire noticed the significance.
The old Damian would have assembled armed men.
The new Damian called the law.
At the warehouse, Adrian carried the ledger.
A copy.
The original was already with federal investigators.
Victor appeared on an upper walkway.
Older than Claire remembered.
Silver at his temples.
Still polished.
Still calm.
Ethan stood beside him.
Terrified but unharmed.
"Damian," Victor called.
"Let the boy go."
"Ledger."
Adrian raised it.
Victor smiled.
"Always predictable when family is involved."
Damian looked at Claire.
"No."
Victor frowned.
Damian continued.
"That's what you never understood."
"What?"
"Family doesn't make people predictable."
Police quietly moved into position outside.
"It makes them choose differently."
Victor laughed.
"You chose your empire over your wife."
Damian didn't flinch.
"I did."
Claire looked at him.
"And I lost both."
Victor's smile faded.
"You still have an empire."
"No."
Damian looked around the decaying warehouse.
"I have companies. Employees. Property."
Then he looked at Claire.
"An empire is what men build when they think control is the same thing as love."
Claire felt those words.
Victor did too.
His expression hardened.
He pulled Ethan closer.
Adrian stepped forward.
"Take me."
"No."
"My son goes. I stay."
Victor considered it.
Then Ethan suddenly kicked backward.
Victor lost his grip.
The boy ran.
Police entered.
Everything happened quickly.
Shouts.
Footsteps.
Victor ran toward a side door.
Damian could have followed.
Instead he went to Ethan.
That choice mattered.
Police caught Victor outside.
No gunfight.
No execution.
No final act of revenge.
Handcuffs clicked around Victor Sloane's wrists beneath flashing lights.
Claire watched Damian hold Adrian's trembling son until Adrian reached them.
Victor looked toward Claire as officers led him away.
"You think this fixes anything?"
Claire said nothing.
He smiled.
"Ask Damian what happened to your father's last letter."
Damian froze.
Claire turned.
"What letter?"
Victor laughed as police pushed him into the vehicle.
Claire stared at Damian.
"What letter?"
"I don't know."
Matthew arrived carrying evidence recovered from Victor's car.
Among it was an envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
Addressed in Robert Mercer's handwriting.
TO CLAIRE.
The seal had already been broken.
Inside was a letter.
Claire unfolded it.
The first paragraph was from her father.
The second contained Damian's father's name.
Then Claire reached the final lines.
Her face changed.
Damian stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Claire looked up at him.
"My father knew I would marry you."
Damian went still.
"How?"
May you like
She lowered her eyes to the last sentence.
And there, written sixteen years earlier, was a warning about Damian Blackwood that Claire had never been meant to read.
