Chapter 7 - The Little Girl Who Changed a Dangerous Man’s Heart

Vincent Moretti had spent decades building a world where nobody could surprise him.

He controlled information.

He controlled decisions.

He controlled the people around him through a combination of respect, fear, and carefully calculated loyalty.

Every move had a reason.

Every conversation had a purpose.

Every person had a place.

That was how he survived.

But Emma Bennett had entered his life without permission, without preparation, and without any understanding of the rules he had spent years creating.

And somehow, she had changed everything.

Not because she was powerful.

Not because she had influence.

Because she reminded him of something he had buried a long time ago.

The man he was before the empire.

Before the fear.

Before people started saying his name in whispers.

The trap had worked.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Vincent sat alone in his office, looking through the information collected from the false meeting announcement.

Someone had reacted.

Someone had moved money.

Someone had contacted an outside account.

The traitor had revealed a small piece of himself.

And small pieces were enough.

A single thread could unravel an entire disguise.

Luca entered the room carrying a folder.

“We followed the movement.”

Vincent looked up.

“And?”

Luca placed the folder down.

“The information went through three different channels before reaching the final destination.”

“Who?”

Luca hesitated.

Vincent noticed immediately.

“Say it.”

“The account belongs to a company connected to your family.”

The room became silent.

Vincent opened the folder.

Inside were financial records.

Names.

Transfers.

Connections.

At the center of it all was a name he knew too well.

Enzo Ricci.

For several seconds, Vincent did not move.

Not because he believed it.

Because he refused to believe it.

Enzo was not just another person inside his organization.

He was blood.

The closest thing Vincent had to a brother.

The man who had stood beside him when they had nothing.

The man who had slept on a broken couch in Vincent’s first apartment because he refused to leave him alone after Vincent’s father died.

Impossible.

But the evidence was there.

And Vincent had learned one painful truth in his life.

Evidence did not care about memories.

“What do you think?” Luca asked.

Vincent closed the folder.

“I think someone wants me to believe it is Enzo.”

Luca nodded slowly.

“You think he is being framed?”

“I think someone who understands me would know exactly who to blame.”

Luca looked at him.

“Because Enzo would hurt the most.”

Vincent said nothing.

That was the answer.

The enemy was not only attacking his empire.

They were attacking his trust.

That evening, Vincent went to see Enzo.

Not with guards.

Not with weapons.

Alone.

Enzo lived in a quiet neighborhood far away from the city’s noise.

A place that did not match the world they came from.

When Enzo opened the door, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“Vincent.”

Vincent looked at him.

“Can I come in?”

Enzo stepped aside.

The house was simple.

Warm.

Nothing like the places where business was discussed.

There were photographs on the walls.

Family moments.

Old memories.

Things Vincent rarely allowed himself to keep.

“You look serious,” Enzo said.

“I found something.”

Enzo poured two glasses of water.

“What?”

Vincent placed the folder on the table.

Enzo looked at it.

Then opened it.

The silence that followed lasted longer than Vincent expected.

Finally, Enzo spoke.

“You think I did this?”

Vincent watched him carefully.

“I think someone wants me to think you did.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Vincent remained quiet.

Enzo laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“After everything?”

Vincent looked away.

That sentence landed harder than anger would have.

Because Enzo was right.

After everything they had survived together.

After everything they had built.

A piece of paper had been enough to create doubt.

“I need the truth,” Vincent said.

Enzo nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

Then he looked directly at him.

“But I hope you remember something.”

“What?”

“I was there when nobody believed in you.”

Vincent said nothing.

“I was there when you had nothing.”

Enzo’s voice became quieter.

“And I was there when you became someone everyone feared.”

A pause.

“But I never became afraid of you.”

Vincent looked at him.

For a moment, he saw the young man from years ago.

The friend who had stayed.

The brother he chose.

Then Vincent stood.

“I’ll find the truth.”

Enzo nodded.

“I know.”

As Vincent walked toward the door, Enzo stopped him.

“Vincent.”

He turned.

“If someone is trying to destroy your family…”

A sadness appeared in Enzo’s eyes.

“Make sure you don’t help them by destroying it yourself.”

Vincent left without answering.

But the words followed him.

The next morning, Vincent visited Emma.

He found her sitting outside the clinic garden.

She was holding a small watering can.

Taking care of flowers.

Of course she was.

Vincent stood nearby.

“What are you doing?”

Emma looked up.

“Helping.”

“With flowers?”

She nodded.

“They were almost dead.”

Vincent looked at the small plants.

“And now?”

“They’re better.”

Vincent smiled slightly.

“You are very confident.”

Emma shrugged.

“My mom says flowers know when someone cares about them.”

Vincent looked at her.

“That sounds like something your mother would say.”

Emma smiled.

“She says people are like flowers too.”

Vincent raised an eyebrow.

“How?”

“If people get hurt, they need someone to help them.”

She looked down.

“Not everyone gets that.”

The words were simple.

But Vincent felt the weight behind them.

Because he understood.

His entire life had been about surviving.

Never needing help.

Never showing pain.

Never admitting when something was broken.

But maybe Emma was right.

Maybe some things could not heal alone.

“Are you scared?” Vincent asked.

Emma looked surprised.

“Of what?”

“After everything that happened.”

She thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Vincent sat beside her.

“Me too.”

The words came out before he could stop them.

Emma looked at him.

“You’re scared?”

Vincent almost corrected her.

Almost told her powerful men were never afraid.

But he was tired of pretending.

“Yes.”

“Of what?”

Vincent looked at the flowers.

“Losing people.”

Emma became quiet.

Then she handed him the watering can.

“Then take care of them.”

Vincent looked at the small plastic watering can in his hand.

A mafia boss.

A feared man.

Standing in a garden holding something meant for children.

And somehow, it felt more honest than anything else he had done.

That afternoon, Vincent returned to his office with a different mindset.

The evidence against Enzo bothered him.

But something else bothered him more.

The timing.

Everything connected to the betrayal happened after Emma arrived.

Someone wanted Vincent emotional.

Distracted.

Focused on protecting her.

Because while Vincent protected the innocent child, the enemy could move freely.

Unless...

Unless that was exactly what they wanted him to think.

Vincent opened Sophia’s notebook again.

He reviewed every page.

Every name.

Every date.

Then he saw something he had missed.

A small mark beside one entry.

A symbol.

The same symbol appeared beside several transactions.

Vincent stared.

Dante had not noticed it.

Luca had not noticed it.

But Vincent had seen it before.

Years ago.

On documents belonging to his father.

A private marking used only by one person.

Someone who worked directly under his father.

Someone who disappeared after his father’s death.

Someone everyone believed was gone.

Vincent slowly stood.

Because suddenly, the betrayal looked different.

This was not someone trying to steal his empire.

This was someone trying to finish something that started years ago.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Vincent answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“You finally found it.”

Vincent froze.

Because he recognized the voice.

Not from fear.

From memory.

A voice he thought he would never hear again.

“Who are you?” Vincent asked.

A quiet laugh.

“You really did forget me.”

The call ended.

Vincent stood in silence.

Then Luca entered.

“What happened?”

Vincent looked at him.

“The person behind this…”

He paused.

“Has been waiting for a very long time.”

Outside the window, the city continued moving.

Unaware that an old enemy had returned.

May you like

And this time, they were not coming for Vincent’s money.

They were coming for his heart.
