Chapter 4 - The Child Hidden From the World

The first thing I felt was not anger.
It was confusion.
The photograph was still in my hand.
A small baby.
A date.
My name.
And a sentence that had shattered everything I thought I knew.
You have another child.
For years, I believed my greatest tragedy was losing Anthony.
I believed the universe had taken everything from me in one cruel moment.
But standing in that hallway, surrounded by the people who had destroyed my trust, I realized something far worse.
Someone had stolen years from me.
Years I could never get back.
I looked at Lena.
She couldn't meet my eyes.
That hurt more than Matteo's betrayal.
Because Matteo had always been ambitious.
He had always wanted power.
But Lena...
Lena was the person I thought had suffered because of my mistakes.
Now I didn't know what was real anymore.
"Explain."
My voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Everyone in the room knew what that meant.
Lena stepped forward.
"Alessandro..."
"Explain."
She closed her eyes.
And for a moment, she looked like someone who had been carrying a secret so heavy that finally putting it down hurt more than holding it.
"I was going to tell you."
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
"When?"
She didn't answer.
"When my son was ten?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"When he was old enough to understand why his father never came for him?"
"That's not fair."
The words came out softly.
But they cut deeper than anger.
"Fair?"
I looked at her.
"My son disappeared."
The room went silent.
"I spent four years believing he was dead."
My voice broke slightly.
"And now you stand here telling me there was another child?"
Lena looked at Lucia.
The little girl was watching us.
She didn't understand the details.
But she understood pain.
"Lucia wasn't supposed to exist in your world."
Those words made me freeze.
"What does that mean?"
Lena swallowed.
"It means Matteo made sure she never would."
My eyes moved toward my brother.
Matteo was still standing near the entrance.
Calm.
Almost amused.
Like he was enjoying watching my entire reality collapse.
"You see, Alessandro," Matteo said, "this is why I always knew you were weak."
I turned toward him.
"Careful."
He smiled.
"You built an empire. You destroyed enemies. You controlled people."
He stepped closer.
"But you never controlled your own heart."
My fists tightened.
"You used my son."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I used your obsession with being a father."
I stared at him.
Trying to understand how someone I shared blood with could become something so cruel.
"Why?"
The question escaped before I could stop it.
"Why would you do this?"
Matteo looked at the portrait of Anthony.
Then back at me.
"Because everything belonged to you."
His voice became colder.
"The company."
"The influence."
"The respect."
"The loyalty."
He pointed toward the photograph.
"Even the future."
I understood then.
This was never about money.
Not completely.
Matteo didn't just want my position.
He wanted my life.
"You were jealous."
His expression hardened.
"I was forgotten."
The words came out bitter.
"Everyone looked at Alessandro Moretti."
"The brilliant son."
"The perfect heir."
"The man who would lead the family."
He stepped closer.
"And I was always the second choice."
For a moment, I saw something behind his anger.
Pain.
Old pain.
But whatever hurt he carried had turned into something dangerous.
"You could have built your own life."
He laughed.
"You really believe that?"
Then he looked at me.
"People like us don't get to choose."
Before I could respond, Lena suddenly spoke.
"He's lying."
Everyone turned toward her.
Matteo's smile disappeared.
Lena stepped forward.
"You weren't forgotten because of Alessandro."
Her voice shook.
"You were forgotten because you betrayed everyone who trusted you."
The room became tense.
I looked at her.
She had spent years hiding.
Running.
Protecting Anthony.
But now she was standing directly against the man who had ruined her life.
Matteo stared at her.
"You should be careful."
"No."
Lena held Lucia closer.
"I'm done being afraid of you."
Something changed in Matteo's face.
Not anger.
Recognition.
Because he realized Lena was no longer the frightened maid he controlled.
She was someone who had nothing left to lose.
I looked down at the photograph again.
The baby.
The date.
The impossible truth.
"Who is the child?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Lena.
"Who?"
Her lips trembled.
"Alessandro..."
"Tell me."
She took a deep breath.
Then whispered:
"Her name is Sofia."
The room went silent.
"Sofia?"
Lena nodded.
"She was born three months before Anthony disappeared."
My mind struggled to process the timeline.
"Who is her mother?"
Lena looked away.
And that hesitation told me everything.
I already knew the answer would hurt.
But I needed to hear it.
"Who?"
Lena whispered:
"Me."
The silence afterward was unbearable.
I stared at her.
The woman I believed was only my son's caretaker.
The woman I thought I understood.
"You and me?"
She nodded.
"I never wanted to hide her from you."
"Then why did you?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because Matteo found out."
I looked toward my brother.
"He threatened you."
"He threatened all of us."
Lena's voice cracked.
"He told me if you knew about Sofia, he would use her against you."
I shook my head.
"No."
"He said Anthony was already gone."
My chest tightened.
"He said if I came to you, he would make sure Sofia disappeared too."
Lucia began crying quietly.
Lena immediately held her.
"I'm sorry."
The apology wasn't enough.
Nothing could make four lost years return.
But before I could say anything, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then I heard breathing.
A child's breathing.
My entire body went cold.
"Anthony?"
A small voice answered.
"Dad..."
I closed my eyes.
"Where are you?"
"I'm scared."
My heart broke.
"I'm coming."
"No."
The word was urgent.
"Don't come here."
"Anthony—"
"He's watching."
I looked toward Matteo.
My brother's expression had changed.
For the first time.
He looked afraid.
The voice continued.
"Dad, you need to know something."
"What?"
A pause.
Then:
"The man you trusted to protect me..."
Static filled the phone.
"Anthony?"
The line remained open.
Then his voice returned.
Barely audible.
"He wasn't working alone."
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone understood.
Matteo wasn't the only person who betrayed me.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Then I looked at the guards.
"Find Anthony."
They nodded.
Immediately.
But before they could leave, every security screen in the hallway suddenly turned on.
One by one.
Ten screens.
Twenty screens.
All showing the same image.
A hidden room.
A chair.
A child sitting inside.
My blood turned cold.
Because the child on the screen was older than Anthony had been when he disappeared.
May you like
And written on the wall behind him were four words.
"Come find your son."
